DIRECTOR MICHAEL GREIF ON TURNING ALICIA KEYS’ NEW YORK INTO HELL’S KITCHEN STORY BY

Michael Greif has helped shape some of the most emotionally charged and influential musicals of the past three decades. His work on Rent, Next to Normal and Dear Evan Hansen helped redefine what a Broadway musical could be, bringing raw, emotional storytelling to center stage and sparking conversations that reached beyond the theatre. With Hell’s Kitchen, he stepped into a project rooted in personal experience and driven by the music of a global icon. The musical features music and lyrics by Grammy winner Alicia Keys, drawing inspiration from her childhood in the New York City neighborhood that gives the show its name. The book is by Pulitzer Prize finalist Kristoffer Diaz, with choreography by Tony nominee Camille A. Brown and music supervision by Emmy and Grammy winner Adam Blackstone. Greif worked closely with the creative team to shape Keys’ personal memories into a bold and emotional coming-of-age story. Greif has always been drawn to original musicals that explore emotional truths. Hell’s Kitchen gave him the chance to build something that reflects the tension and beauty of growing up in a city that tests you, shapes you and ultimately defines you. “I’m always looking for interesting subject matter, interestingly told,” he said in a conversation with Kathy Henderson for Broadway.com. “I was excited about how Hell’s Kitchen takes on issues of race, what it means to be a mixed kid and what it means to be a single mom trying to give her kid the best that New York City has to offer.” Collaborating with Keys meant partnering with an artist making her first foray into musical theatre. “Alicia is a great collaborator,” he said. “She certainly has points of view, and she cares deeply about everything that happens in the musical,

but she is also generous and interested in what Kris Diaz and I have to say, what Camille Brown has to say, and what the designers are contributing. It’s a wonderful duality because she’s leading the process, but she is also a student of the process. She hasn’t made a musical before, so she brings her extraordinary skills, but also a desire to learn from the rest of us, including our incredible cast.” Keys was born Alicia Augello Cook in Hell’s Kitchen in 1981. Her early life was filled with the contradictions of the neighborhood. She carried a homemade knife for protection but was also surrounded by the music of Thelonious Monk, Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong. Her Italian-American mother signed her up for classical piano lessons at the age of seven. She wrote her first song not long after that. “Good things take time and, for 13 years, I’ve been dreaming, developing and finding inspiration for a musical based on my experience growing up in Hell’s Kitchen, NYC,” Keys said. “Hell’s Kitchen is inspired by my life, but it’s not a biographical story. It’s a story about family relationships and identity: Who are we? Who do we want to be? Who are we becoming?” She added, “The score features new songs that I’m really excited to get out into the world alongside many of my album releases that you know but you’ve never heard like this—rearranged and reinterpreted. I love and respect the art form so much and I’m excited to see it come to life.” Greif had never directed a musical built around a pop catalog, but he was intrigued by what Keys and Diaz were setting out to do. From the beginning, the show was not meant to be a typical jukebox musical. “Alicia and Kris never had in mind a ‘here’s-how-Alicia-became-a-recordingartist’ story,” he explained. “It’s a story about a kid trying to find herself, and that idea seemed juicy and dramatic and engaging to me. We agreed that the first song in the musical would not be the most recognizable, and the second and third are original songs written for the show. I’m hoping audiences meet this not as a jukebox musical but as a show in which the ideas and expressions flow completely out of the situation and the characters. Later, as we move into some of the greatest hits, you get that dual moment of experiencing a song in its dramatic situation while remembering the emotional connection you already had with the song.” Greif believes the audience plays a crucial role in shaping a musical. Their reactions sharpen the work and reveal what the story is really saying. “There’s a moment of illumination that happens when you put a show in front of an audience for the first time,” he said. “These people had to work a little to get there—our show means something to them—and so their responses reveal an incredible amount about what we’ve done right, what we still need to work on and what needs to land better. They’re the final component; we get to sit back and see it through the audience’s refreshed eyes. That’s always my favorite part.” Looking at his own evolution as a director, Greif credits experience with helping him stay open and focused on the work. “Probably it’s a feeling of security now, of capability, that allows me to hear other perspectives, the audience’s point of view,” he said. “I’m not out there trying to prove myself, so I can just try to make the most vital and impassioned stories possible. I do feel like I’ve been part of a group of artists who have pushed the musical form, who have opened up the subject matter for what great musicals can be.” He is proud of the result and proud of the team that brought Hell’s Kitchen to life. “It’s actually been invigorating rather than exhausting,” he said. “I’m excited to share this.” For more information and features, head to Broadway.com.

THE HEART OF HADESTOWN: ANAÏS MITCHELL AND RACHEL CHAVKIN ON THEIR TONY-WINNING COLLABORATION STORY BY

Hadestown is a musical that stirs deep emotions, blending myth, music and raw feeling into a unique theatrical experience. At the core of its power are two visionary artists: Anaïs Mitchell, the singer-songwriter who conceived the story, and Rachel Chavkin, the director who brought it to life. Their collaboration has resulted in a Tony Award-winning show, earning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Direction of a Musical. Mitchell and Chavkin shared insights into their creative process in a conversation with Broadway.com Managing Editor Beth Stevens. The seeds for Hadestown were planted in an unexpected moment of inspiration. Mitchell recalls, “I was driving in my car, and these lyrics came into my head: ‘Wait for me, I’m coming in my garters and pearls with what melody did you barter me from the wicked underworld?’” While those specific lyrics didn’t make it into the show, the melody for “Wait for Me” stayed with her, becoming one of the musical’s defining songs. When Mitchell and Chavkin first began working together, their discussions were abstract and exploratory. “We met, and it was like, ‘Let’s try to talk about collaboration in abstract ways,’ which is totally impossible,” Chavkin laughs. But the process shifted when Chavkin broke through the formalities. “Finally, I was like, ‘Can I just tell you what I would do if I was the director?’” she recalls. “Anaïs was like, ‘Oh my God! Please do that!’” From then on, their partnership flourished,

laying the foundation for the show’s dramatic pulse. The music of Hadestown blends New Orleans jazz and big-band influences to create a sound that mirrors the show’s emotional journey. Chavkin points to the song “Wait for Me” as a key example, highlighting how its surging chorus embodies themes of longing and determination. “The music has a forward-and-back motion,” she says, “which mirrors the journey of a hero who bends time and space to be reunited with his lover.” Beyond the music, the emotional heart of Hadestown lies in its characters, especially the love story between Orpheus and Eurydice, and the complex dynamics between Hades and Persephone. Chavkin describes the show’s ability to move audiences as one of its greatest strengths: “It’s deeply warm and beautiful in a way that is spiritually moving,” she says. “I want everyone singing Hadestown. It cracks my rib cage open every time I see it.” Mitchell shares that her goal was to create a musical that resonates on multiple levels. “Hopefully, as Rachel is saying, it hits you in the heart, but it’s also very kinetic—it moves you physically too,” she explains. “It’s something you can feel in your body.” Chavkin’s vision for the production extended beyond the music to influence the show’s visual design. She worked closely with set designer Rachel Hauck to craft a world that feels both mythic and grounded. “The show begins with the feeling of being in Preservation Hall, but then transforms into an oil drum,” Chavkin explains. “We wanted the set to feel like a place where worlds collide—where the mythic meets the gritty reality of industry.” Hadestown offers a unique experience: “It’s not just a show you watch—it’s a show you feel,” Chavkin notes. “There’s something for everyone in the show,” Mitchell says. “It hits you in the heart, in the body and in the soul.” For more in-depth interviews, up-to-date news and show reviews on Broadway, visit Broadway.com.
