L

oosely based on Berry Gordy Jr.’s 1994 autobiography (To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, the Memories of Motown), the greatest asset Motown the Musical has is the music itself: 66 hit songs running the gamut from the Jackson 5’s “ABC” to the Miracles’ “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me.” To fully understand the importance of the music and the impact that Motown had on American culture, however, you have to understand the historical context in which it was created. Gordy first made his name writing songs for such Detroit acts as the Matadors (later Smokey Robinson & the Miracles) and Jackie Wilson (whose dynamic stage presence influenced artists from James Brown to Michael Jackson). When Wilson’s “Lonely Teardrops” became a Top 10 hit in 1958, Gordy grew frustrated at the low profit percentage songwriters made and realized that producing records and publishing songs was where the money was. Within a year, he’d launched Tamla Records and bought the house that would become Motown’s Hitsville U.S.A. recording studio. 12 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

America in the mid-1950s — just after the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling that ended segregation — was a very different place. The success of 19-year-old Elvis Presley’s 1954 cover of bluesman Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup’s “That’s All Right” proved that rebellious white teens were ready for African-American-inspired rock ’n’ roll. But the racially divided country was far less eager to embrace that music when performed by African-American artists. Gordy, however, had the Midas touch. Within a year of launching his label, he’d had hits with Barrett Strong’s “Money (That’s What I Want)” and the Miracles’ “Shop Around,” which became the first Tamla/Motown’ single to sell a million copies. In 1961, the company scored its first No. 1 song, the Marvelettes’ “Mr. Postman.” Over the next 10 years, the label scored an unprecedented 110 Top 10 hits from a roster that included the Supremes, the Four Tops, the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, the Commodores and Gladys Knight & the Pips, all of whom are represented onstage in Motown the Musical.

Over time, Motown revolutionized the music industry and proved a formative influence on future rock ’n’ roll legends — the Beatles and Rolling Stones, among them. Gordy’s blueprint was so formulaic that it’s often been called a “hit factory.” Stylistically, the Motown sound was rooted in Southern soul and R&B, but with rough edges polished away by a smooth pop sheen. The call-and-response and tambourine-accentuated backbeat found in gospel were there, but the melodies were simple and infectious, perfectly accented by orchestral string sections, charted horn sections and harmonized background vocals. Here was an African-American sound so unique that white artists couldn’t replicate it. Gordy hired a core team of exceptional

songwriters, including the trio Holland– Dozier–Holland (Lamont Dozier and brothers Brian and Eddie Holland), Norman Whitfield, William “Mickey” Stevenson, Smokey Robinson, Barrett Strong, Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, and many others. He used a tight-knit group of musicians, collectively known as the Funk Brothers, to record the instrumental tracks for many of Motown’s most famous records. But perhaps his greatest gift was his talent for developing artists. He and his team taught their acts to be ambassadors for the entire ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION 13

African-American community, and insisted that they learn to walk, talk and act in a dignified fashion at all times to contradict the image many white Americans had of black people at the time. Each artist was immaculately groomed, dressed and choreographed to look classy and elegant; they served as role models for kids who came from the same housing projects they had. Many debuted as opening acts on Motown package tours, giving them time to refine their skills before being thrust into the spotlight. Over time, Motown revolutionized the music industry and proved a formative influence on future rock ’n’ roll legends — the Beatles and Rolling Stones, among them. The label and its music also changed attitudes toward African-American musicians during the civil 14 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

rights era. “I recognized the impact [we were having],” Smokey Robinson recalled in a newspaper interview, “because Motown acts were going all over the world. I recognized the bridges that we crossed, the racial problems and the barriers that we broke down. … I would come to the South in the early days and audiences would be segregated. Then they started to get the Motown music, and we would go back, and the audiences were integrated and the kids were dancing together and holding hands.” There’s only so much history one can get from a two-hour musical. But Motown the Musical serves as an important reminder of how Berry Gordy’s vision helped create an America in which people of all races were “Dancing in the Streets.”

She was the first woman elected as chair of the Broadway League, the industry’s trade organization, and serves on several industry committees. She has received numerous awards and is currently on the board and executive committee of Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS. KEVIN McCOLLUM (Producer) received three Tony awards for best musical, for In the Heights (2008), Avenue Q (2004) and Rent (1996), which also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and was made into a feature film. He also produced The Drowsy Chaperone (five 2006 Tony awards), Baz Luhrmann’s La Bohème (two 2002 Tony awards), the revival of Ragtime (2009), West Side Story (2009), Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo (2011), [title of show] (2008), the Broadway debut production of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas and the off-Broadway hit De La Guarda. In 1995, he received the Robert Whitehead Award for outstanding commercial theaer producing. He received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, the University of Cincinnati, in 2005. DOUG MORRIS (Producer) is widely considered the most influential executive in the music industry. CEO of Sony Music Entertainment, he has worked with many of the most popular artists of the past four decades, including the Rolling Stones, Phil Collins, Pete Townshend, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Nicks, Bette Midler, Tori Amos, INXS, Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder and U2. FOR YOUR INFORMATION THE THEATRE A fully restored 1929 “Movie Palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,665 seats, is a multiple-purpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballet, symphonies, concerts, movies, and private corporate events. PRIVATE ROOMS The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, with accommodations for 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. The Ticket Office is open for walk up ticket sales Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., and Saturday,10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The Fox Theatre Ticket Office is not open on Sundays unless there is a performance. On event days, the Ticket Office opens two hours prior to show time. Doors to the Fox open one hour prior to show time. ELEVATORS Elevators are located at the north end of each lobby. The elevators are available during all performances and make it possible to access each lobby without the use of stairs. Patrons should be aware that access to upper seating areas do involve stairs. PARKING Parking is available within a four-block radius in all directions of the Fox Theatre. Advanced reserved parking is available for sale at the Fox Ticket Office or by calling 855-285-8499. The Fox Theatre assumes no responsibility for vehicles parked in any of the privately owned parking lots operating in the Fox Theatre district. PERFORMANCE NOTES All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket in order to be admitted to the theatre. Not all events are suitable for children. Infants will not be admitted to adult programs/performances. Parents will be asked to remove children who create a disturbance.   Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the management, in conjunction with the wishes of the producers.   Please turn off all pagers and cell phones prior to the beginning of each performance.   Camera and recording devices are strictly prohibited.   Backstage employees are represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E.)

ETIQUETTE 1. Please arrive early. Latecomers may not be seated until intermission. 2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) before the performance begins. 3. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting. 4. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose. 7. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show. 8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag. 9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic. 10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you. 11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. The list goes on, but it wouldn’t be complete without mentioning that MSN.com named Fort Walton Beach the happiest city in Florida. That’s a lot to brag about, so we decided to find out what makes other beaches in a state full of beaches green with envy when compared to the Emerald Coast. First, that green-tinted water. Digital, shmigital: Collectors are spinning with excitement over vinyl albums By Bret Love

magine scruffy indie-rock hipsters, tattooed techno tribalists and urban cool hip-hop heads rubbing shoulders with studied jazz cats and grizzled alt-country rebels, all digging deep in vinyl bins for bargains, rarities and special pressings. If you thought vinyl died years ago, you thought wrong. Music retailers are experiencing a Christmas-morning-like buzz of excitement not seen since the dawn of the Napster-led digital download revolution. More than 125 years after vinyl records were developed, this granddaddy of all music formats is in the midst of a renaissance. In fact, Record Store Day, held every April, has become one of the most important events for independent retailers like Atlanta’s Wax n’ Facts. Want your Motown in its natural state? Frank Sinatra? Ella? You can find them all if you’re willing to look. 50 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

Let’s review. By the late 1980s, record sales had declined so sharply that pundits predicted vinyl’s death. Major-label distributors restricted return policies, so retailers ordered only titles they knew would sell. Many titles were deleted from production altogether. They became scarce, and record-pressing plants closed. In retrospect, this was a calculated effort to make consumers switch to CDs, which were considerably more profitable for record companies. Still, vinyl albums remained a favorite with audiophiles, record collectors, and hip-hop and electronic music DJs. By 2007, record sales began rising sharply, from 988,000 sold in the United States that year to more than 4.6 million sold in 2012. By 2014, sales of digital albums and CDs had dropped precipitously and vinyl was the only physical music medium whose sales continued to rise. “It’s hard to say why vinyl took off like a

rocket,” says avid collector James Kelly, front man for Atlanta alt-country band Slim Chance & the Convicts. “But I think it’s a much more fun way to listen to music than downloads. You have a physical object, a nice cover that can also function as art. The technology in playback equipment is pretty amazing right now. I’m not interested in new pressings, but give me a Columbia six-eye Kind of Blue first pressing or a rare Blaze Foley LP, and I’m set.” Kelly is part of an obsessive breed of collectors known as “crate-diggers.” These audio archaeologists spend hours scouring record bins in search of treasures. According to Sean Bourne, longtime manager of iconic Little 5 Points record store Wax n’ Facts, they’re a unique breed: “Record buyers are weird mutants ... and I mean that as a compliment. Our customers range in age from 15 to late 60s, and they’re as diverse racially as the musical tastes they adhere to.” Although the advent of streaming services like Pandora and online retailers like Amazon have devastated brick-and-mortar music stores, indie retailers such as Wax n’ Facts, Criminal Records and Wuxtry Records have survived in Atlanta thanks to their personal relationships with customers, extensive musical knowledge and the fact that they buy and sell used vinyl and CDs. Criminal Records owner Eric Levin co-founded the annual Record Store Day, which is celebrated at 1,400 indie stores in the United States (visit RecordStoreDay.com for participating retailers) and thousands more around the world. Kelly agreed to divulge some of his favorite

crate-digging hot spots. “I do most of my record hunting at Goodwill and other thrift stores,” he says. “It’s hit or miss, but every now and then you strike gold. As far as record stores, I like the dollar bins at Wuxtry, because they put out an interesting variety. Wax n’ Facts is the best — it’s one of the reasons I moved to Atlanta in 1983. There’s also a store in Clarkston, Records Galore, that had incredible stuff at great prices.” (It closed for a time when its owner died but should have reopened by now.) The Internet is heaven for hard-core collectors willing to pay top dollar for that one special record and collectives whose members trade and sell albums among themselves, Kelly says. But high prices, scammers and questionable shipping methods run contrary to his bargain-hunting style, which includes a $2 price limit and scouring Craigslist for yard sales. He also recommends the Atlanta Record Show, held at the Century Center Marriott every three to four months. Bourne, who’s worked at Wax n’ Facts for more than 35 years, advises new record collectors to “come prepared to dig a while and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Let yourself be captivated by an album cover, and broaden your horizons by experimenting with genres, bands or albums that you’re not familiar with.” Says Kelly: “Keep hitting the places that have the most turnover of albums, as you never know what will show up. Be willing to take a chance on something that’s $1 or $2. It might be fantastic. If not, you can probably resell it for a dollar. But never pay more than you think a record is worth to you. FOX THEATRE INSTITUTE

The Fox Theatre was saved from demolition by Atlanta residents some 40 years ago. As way to pay it forward, theater leaders created an outreach program that’s know as the Fox Theatre Institute (FTI). It began in 2008 with the goal of helping preserve historic buildings, revitalize arts programs and strengthen local economies throughout Georgia. By referencing the Fox Theatre’s experience, the FTI began providing guidance, advice and consultation to others so that they, too, could create thriving arts programs in their communities. In 2014-15, the FTI awarded a $10,000 preservation grant to the Historic Holly Theater in Dahlonega. Its results were showcased June 4 during the FTI’s annual Theatre Revival Tour.
