ADRIENNE ARSHT CENTER

MIAMI, FLORIDA

Dear friends,

Welcome to Moulin Rouge! The Musical at the Adrienne Arsht Center, Miami’s cultural pulse. Our 20th season is well underway, and there are still plenty of shows, events and educational opportunities to come.

Two shows remain in the 2025-26 edition of Broadway in Miami: The Notebook: The Musical May 5-10 and The Book of Mormon June 9-14. After a short pause over the summer, Broadway will be back at the Arsht when the 2026-27 Broadway in Miami season opens September 29-October 4 with Buena Vista Social Club, the Tony Award-winning musical about the Cuban singers and instrumentalists who appeared on the landmark 1996 album of the same name. (The original Broadway production in New York stars Wesley Wray, an alum of AileyCamp Miami, a full-scholarship, summertime dance program for Miami-Dade middle school students at the Arsht.) Other titles in the six-show season include A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical, The Great Gatsby, The Sound of Music, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Jersey Boys. For dates and subscriptions, go to ArshtCenter.org/Broadway.

Next month, we’re thrilled to present acclaimed jazz singer Gregory Porter at a special concert taking place during the Adrienne Arsht Center’s 20th Anniversary Gala. Proceeds from the April 11 concert and gala benefit Arsht Impact, our suite of educational programs and community events that every year reach more than 100,000 Miami residents. To purchase tickets and to learn more about Arsht Impact, please go to ArshtCenter.org/ArshtImpact.

Thank you for your support, and I hope you enjoy the show.

INSIDE THE REAL MOULIN ROUGE

The Tony Award-winning musical of the same name pays homage to a landmark of Parisian history.

While the Tony Award-winning musical Moulin Rouge! is a work of fiction, it is rooted in a specific time and historic place. Adapted from the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film of the same name, the musical chronicles the interactions of young writer Christian and a cast of characters (some fabricated, some factual) swirling around the real-life Moulin Rouge nightclub in Paris.

Moulin Rouge! is set during the turn of the century at the height of La Belle Époque period. This was an era of French history ranging from the end of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 to the start of World War I in 1914. The time was marked not only by economic prosperity in France, but the flourishing of arts and culture. A certain joie de vivre was felt throughout society. During this time, the Moulin Rouge club was the inimitable hub of Paris’ nightlife entertainment.

Founded by Charles Zidler and Joseph Oller, the Moulin Rouge opened on Oct. 6, 1889. Zidler and Oller wisely chose Montmartre in the 18th arrondissement (neighborhood) as its locale. The northern Parisian location was a lower-class neighborhood, known for its population of artists. Zidler and Oller knew the allure of mingling between bohemians with the middle- and upper-classes had appeal, as La Belle Époque’s sense of mirth allowed social barriers to blur.

The nightclub opened at the Jardin de Paris. The outdoor garden offered food, drink and cabaret entertainment. A giant stucco elephant, purchased by Zidler and Oller at the 1889 Exposition Universelle, watched over the al fresco space. An opium den sat inside the elephant, accessible by a spiral staircase in one of its legs.

Within this outdoor space and an indoor auditorium, the Moulin Rouge offered an everchanging variety of acts. Regular offerings ranged from operettas and musical revues to circus-oriented performances, such as the famous French flatulist Le Pétomane and the clown duo Footit and Chocolat. One hallmark of the space was the guarantee of dancing chorines, earning the nightclub the moniker “Le Premier Palais de Femmes” — the first palace of women.

Much of the dancing at the Moulin Rouge featured the can-can, a style performed by a chorus line incorporating high kicks, splits and cartwheels. The origin of the can-can is disputed; while it predates the establishment of the Moulin Rouge, the venue increased its popularity. The choreography became practically synonymous with the club. Sonya Tayeh’s Tonywinning choreography for the musical juxtaposes the can-can with more modern dance.

Beyond the stage, the can-can is a prominent fixture of much of the artwork inspired by the Moulin Rouge. Jules Chéret’s “Bal au Moulin Rouge” painting and Alfred Choubrac’s “Au Joyeux Moulin Rouge” served as advertising for the nightclub and are still recognizable images today. Perhaps most notably, painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was commissioned to create a series of posters for the venue. His works such as “Au Moulin Rouge” and “Moulin Rouge–La Goulue” depict both performers and patrons of the club and immortalize the famous hall.

Toulouse-Lautrec’s Moulin legacy extends beyond his iconic images. He is one of the several characters portrayed in Moulin Rouge! based on a real person. Of them, the character of Toulouse most closely matches his real-life counterpart: He was indeed a bohemian artist seen often at the club and used a cane. The master of ceremonies seen in the musical, Harold Zidler, is inspired by the aforementioned co-founder Charles Zidler. “Roxanne” dancer Nini is based on real Moulin performer Nini Pattes en L’Air (Nini Legs in the Air), who, in real life, was known as a preeminent interpreter of the can-can, teaching the dance to future generations.

Finally, Satine, the star attraction of the Moulin Rouge seen in the musical, is a fictionalized version of Jane Avril. Avril was a noted performer throughout Parisian dance halls, who became a headliner of the Moulin Rouge in the 1890s. Her prominence and nimble dancing are captured in Toulouse-Lautrec’s painting “Jane Avril.”

The Moulin Rouge still stands today. Despite a 1915 fire that destroyed the original structure, the venue was rebuilt. The Moulin Rouge remains a major entertainment destination for visitors to Paris, offering a peek into the arts and culture explosion of La Belle Époque. The musical, which opened on Broadway in 2019 and launched a national tour in 2022, does the same, eight times a week.

A BRIEF HISTORY

The Moulin Rouge club you will see in the theatre tonight is a work of theatrical imagination in the spirit of the Moulin Rouge of Paris. Here’s a brief history of that emblematic venue.

▪ October 6, 1889: The Moulin Rouge opens at the foot of the Montmartre hill. The aim of its founders, Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler, is to allow the very rich to come and slum it in a fashionable district, where people live differently from other parts of Paris. The place attracts men and women, the middle classes and rich foreigners passing through Paris, as well as artists and ordinary folk. The French cancan, a new dance inspired by the quadrille, enchanted the spectators. Nicknamed “The First Palace of Women” by Oller and Zidler, the cabaret quickly becomes a great success.

▪ The first revue, Circassiens et Circassiennes, is launched in April 1890. ToulouseLautrec creates the posters for the Moulin Rouge from 1891, the first being La Goulue

▪ July 29, 1907: First appearance of Mistinguett at the Moulin Rouge in the Revue de la Femme.

▪ After the First World War, Francis Salabert takes charge of the Moulin Rouge. The venue experiences a new popularity thanks to Jacques-Charles and Mistinguett. As the artistic director of the Moulin Rouge, Mistinguett sets a new standard for spectacular revue shows that will inspire Las Vegas venues for nearly a century. American revues, including the Hoffmann Girls, are put on for the first time in Paris.

▪ In the 1930s, the ballroom is transformed into the most ultra-modern nightclub of the time. The Moulin Rouge welcomes the Cotton Club in 1937.

▪ June 22, 1951: Georges France, called Jo France, acquires the Moulin Rouge and starts major renovation work. The birthplace of the French cancan now hosts major international artists.

▪ 1955: Jo France transfers the Moulin Rouge to the brothers Joseph and Louis Clérico. The famous French cancan is still performed, soon choreographed by Ruggero Angeletti and danced by the Doriss Girls.

▪ 1962: Jacki Clérico, son of Joseph Clérico, takes charge of the Moulin Rouge. It is the start of a new era: enlargement of the auditorium, installation of a giant aquarium and the first aquatic ballet. Frou Frou of 1963 and its ensuing success marked the beginning of the series of shows beginning with an “F,” their lucky letter, including ten shows up to the latest revue.

▪ In 2019, the Moulin Rouge and its 60 artists celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Féerie revue show: two hours of amazement featuring cabaret and music hall styles, dance scenes and surprise acts, without forgetting the Moulin Rouge’s most emblematic dance, the French cancan.

▪ October 2024: The Moulin Rouge, famous around the world, celebrates its 135th anniversary.

The authentic Moulin Rouge of Paris invites you to enter its dazzling and spectacular world. Visit us at the home and birthplace of the Parisian way of celebrating since 1889! www.MoulinRouge.fr
