Welcome to Clowes Memorial Hall!

We’re so glad you decided to “ease on down the road” to the theatre and join us for this performance of The Wiz. The original production opened on Broadway in January 1975 and went on to win seven Tony Awards, including the coveted Best Musical. This groundbreaking twist on The Wizard of Oz changed the face of Broadway with its iconic score, packed with soul, gospel, rock, and ’70s funk. It remains a beloved classic, inspiring numerous productions over the years — including a live television event in 2015.

In April, we’ll head back to the Murat Theatre for a night of mystery and mayhem. Murder and blackmail are on the menu when six mysterious guests assemble at Boddy Manor for a night they’ll (and you’ll) never forget. Based on the fan-favorite 1985 Paramount Pictures film and inspired by the classic Hasbro board game, Clue is the ultimate whodunit — guaranteed to leave you dying of laughter and guessing until the final twist.

Then in May, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast returns to Indianapolis, bringing with it the romance, spectacle, and unforgettable music that have made it a global sensation.

There is nothing quite like the magic of live theatre — the lights dimming, the orchestra beginning, and the shared energy between performers and audience. Every performance is unique, and your presence is an essential part of what makes it so.

Whether this is your first visit or you’re a longtime subscriber, we thank you for being here and for supporting live theatre. We hope tonight’s performance lifts your spirits and stays with you long after the final curtain.

Enjoy the show,

AMBER RUFFIN ON ADAPTING THE WIZ FOR 2024: “IT’S NOT LIKE DOROTHY’S HOLDING AN IPAD”

Amber Ruffin remembers her first time watching the Sidney Lumet movie The Wiz, in the basement of the family home. “On the big TV. We had one big TV,” she told Broadway.com Editor-in-Chief Paul Wontorek on The Broadway Show.

As Ruffin explained, as a young Black girl, The Wiz—an all-Black take on The Wizard of Oz—”just expanded how you thought about what entertainment could be.”

Young Amber was also struck by the fact that her whole family had memorized every moment—clearly they were seeing it for the umpteenth time. “And then you come to find out, if you go to almost any house in America, everybody knows every part of The Wiz.”

Today, Ruffin—one of the Tony-nominated book writers of the musical Some Like it Hot—is part of the creative team for the Broadway-bound

revival of The Wiz, adapting the book originally penned by white librettist William F. Brown. “I feel like my task is to bring The Wiz into 2024,” said Ruffin. “It's not like Dorothy's holding an iPad…”

One of Ruffin’s tasks has been weeding out Brown’s on-the-nose ’70s street slang (sample line: “Man, I have seen me some spacedout garbage cans in my day…!”) to fashion something more timeless. “I wanted to write one that kids can do 20 years from now, that you wouldn't read it and go, this is from [the 2020s].”

Audiences’ familiarity with the material is a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, audiences who already love The Wiz are going to be geared up to have a good time. On the other hand, well…

“Yesterday I was like, Oh God, everyone's going to be so crazy because we changed this and this…” said Ruffin. “But I hope people are going to love it.”

One of the major changes is a Dorothy that’s roughly the same age as her straw-filed, metallic and furry companions on the Yellow Brick Road. As Ruffin and the show's director Schele Williams have determined, they’re a ragtag group of friends, not a girl and her weird uncles.

“It really changed everything,” said Ruffin. “For her to be a young Black girl leading these people—that's fantastic. We wanted her to be the natural leader that she is."

"And then, in the end of our version, she becomes president.” A beat. “I'm just kidding.”

IT’S NO MYSTERY: HOW CLUE WENT FROM BOARD GAME TO SHOWSTOPPER

It began in wartime England when blackout curtains kept the world in shadow and imagination was the best escape. Anthony Pratt, a British musician working in a munitions factory, spent his nights dreaming up a game inspired by the murder mystery parties he used to play piano for, elegant affairs where guests strutted through drawing rooms accusing each other of fictional crimes. In 1947 he patented the idea, calling it Murder! Two years later Waddingtons released it in England as Cluedo and Parker Brothers brought it to America as Clue. The premise was simple yet irresistible: a mansion full of suspects and a single mystery to solve.

Clue turned deduction into drama. Each player became a character with secrets and motives and the board itself became a stage. In the gray years after the war it offered something the world needed: wit and playfulness. Soon those characters, Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, Professor Plum and Mrs. Peacock, escaped the game box and entered pop culture. Over time the game evolved through new editions and

digital updates but the essence stayed the same. When toy giant Hasbro took over the brand it ensured that Clue remained a household staple and a symbol of clever fun.

Written in 1993, Clue The Musical transforms the familiar mansion into a world of music, movement and suspicion. It is part musical comedy, part live action game night. The show keeps the central question of who did it, where and with what but reshuffles the cards at every performance. With 216 possible endings no two nights are alike. The audience gets to play detective, guessing alongside a gleefully unreliable cast of suspects. It is theater as game and game as theater, which makes perfect sense for a story that has always invited participation.

The jump from parlor game to stage works because Clue was theatrical from the start. Every roll of the dice created suspense and every accusation drew laughter. The game’s built in drama, with its vivid characters and contained setting, was practically begging for footlights. On stage the mansion becomes a playground for double takes and big personalities. Miss Scarlet slinks through the library, Colonel Mustard polishes his charm and Professor Plum overanalyzes everything. Even the rope and revolver get their moment in the spotlight.

Underneath the comedy is the same spark that made the game timeless. Pratt created Clue in a dark era, offering people a way to connect and laugh. The musical keeps that spirit alive, replacing dice rolls with choreography and suspicion with showmanship. More than 75 years after its invention, Clue still delights in its contradictions. It is about murder but full of life, about deceit yet built on play. Whether around a table or under bright lights, it continues to invite all to join the game.
