With unforgettable choreography and music, MJ earned 10 Tony Award nominations and won four, captivating more than five million fans worldwide. This show goes beyond the iconic moves and sound, offering a rare glimpse into Michael Jackson’s creative mind and collaborative spirit. As you may recall (or will soon learn), Michael Jackson played the Scarecrow in the 1978 film adaptation of The Wiz, alongside Diana Ross as Dorothy. This groundbreaking twist on The Wizard of Oz changed the face of Broadway with an iconic score packed with soul, gospel, rock, and '70s funk. We can’t wait for the new national tour to “ease on down the road” to Clowes Memorial Hall in March. Our touring Broadway companies don’t just entertain — they give back to the community. During the December run of Hamilton, cast members from the Angelica Tour graciously became Celebrity Baristas at Café Oztara, serving patrons and collecting donations for the Damien Center. HOW MICHAEL JACKSON’S FORMER CHOREOGRAPHERS AND A BALLET DIRECTOR UNITED TO CREATE THE DANCE OF MJ THE MUSICAL

Director-choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and Jackson movement experts Rich + Tone describe staging the hit show. STORY BY

Ruthie Fierberg At a club in Oakland, California, two brothers snuck into an album release party. It was 1992, and these fearless teens took to the dance floor and commanded it. Travis Payne, then a choreographer for Michael Jackson, just happened to be there and noticed Rich and Tone Talauega — two Golden State natives who grew up dancing in the streets of North Richmond. Impressed by them, Payne recruited Rich and Tone for a gig in Los Angeles. The brothers flew to L.A. and were whisked to a studio — where Payne and co-choreographer LaVelle Smith Jr. also happened to be rehearsing Michael Jackson’s Dangerous tour. Though Rich and Tone did not dance as part of that concert tour, they joined Jackson’s dance crew in 1995 and began choreographing for him in 1996, as assistant choreographers on Jackson’s dance film Ghosts. Nearly 30 years after that first trip to L.A., Broadway director-choreographer Christopher Wheeldon asked Rich and Tone to choreograph movement specifically for the character of Michael Jackson in MJ — a bio-musical about the King of Pop, centered around rehearsals for the Dangerous tour. Jackson was not only renowned for his music — those high-pitched vocals and unbeatable songs. He was also known for his incomparable movement. A musical about Jackson would need to include his physical singularity, while also using choreography to create a world around him. Rich and Tone took point on the former, Wheeldon the latter — as well as the full vision of the musical as its director.

“Rich and Tone are the most incredible, living, breathing encyclopedias of Michael’s intention and language,” Wheeldon told Broadway News. “This show would not have happened without them.” Michael’s moves The Talauegas describe Jackson’s movement as a combination of street (“primal, innate” movement evolving from a community’s take on social dance) and technique (formal, institutionalized dance). For instance, Jackson was widely influenced by James Brown, but much of Brown’s movement came from the social dance of his own time. “When you see James Brown, a lot of what he’s doing is the mashed potato,” said Rich. “It’s all feet, ankles, knees, a lot of footwork.” Just as Brown’s 1970s footwork is an iteration of that particular dance craze, Jackson’s 1990s footwork is an evolution of Brown’s. Jackson also used a lot popping, “which was created out of funk styles from the ’70s,” said Tone. But Jackson did not only dance to existing beats, he crafted the beats to dance to. He wrote the songs, their rhythms and chords, to cater to the way he naturally moved. “[Michael] started not only to pick some of these dances, he also created music that went with it.” As the Talauegas emphasized, Jackson’s singing and dancing were inextricably linked — a connection they learned from years of watching Jackson from the wings, dancing onstage with him, choreographing alongside him and “through osmosis,” as Rich put it. All of that observation allowed the Talauega brothers to create a glossary of key elements that comprise Jackson’s movement. The first they call “timekeepers,” steps that literally helped Jackson keep the music’s beat, Rich said, “like the left heel steady-hitting the ground, the hip steady-pulsating back and forth or the right foot steady-tapping on the ground.” “He’s doing certain movements to make sure his diaphragm and his throat aren’t obstructed from singing in pitch,” Rich said. Tone added, “It’s the art of dancing without dancing. When he sings a verse, he’s not doing the moonwalk, he’s not doing James Brown footwork. He’s doing these timekeepers. The energy [he] pushed behind it — from the naked eye, it almost looks like he’s dancing full out.” Timekeepers are the first thing Rich and Tone teach any actor playing “Middle Michael” or the main “MJ.” As Rich said, “It is part of Michael’s foundation.” But the basis of Jackson’s movement also includes signature flashes, like the moonwalk (known in street dance as the backslide), sideslides, tilting up on his toes, inverted spins and poses. “Michael took every pose known to the human anatomy, period,” said Rich. “It was part of a language. You do something and, boom, you pose — an exclamation mark.” Jackson also kept his hands active. Tone said, “He’s probably one of the only singers I know that dances with his hands a lot.” “When you look at Michael’s style, his syllabus is very deep in terms of vocabulary,” Tone said. Before teaching any actor the choreography of Michael in MJ, Rich and Tone drill these foundations into the actors playing Little Michael, Middle Michael and MJ — collectively, “the Michaels.” Beyond teaching these steps, Rich and Tone must instill Jackson-esque execution. “The precision and attack of Michael’s movement and his performance was second to none,” Wheeldon added. The Michaels — whether on Broadway, on tour or abroad — endure “boot camp” with Rich and Tone. There’s instruction in foundational movement (only to music of the era to instill that sense of rhythm and groove), hours of watching videos of Jackson and lessons about the man himself. “We have to infuse confidence into this person to be able to walk in those loafers, those slacks, with that Fedora and that glove,” said Rich. “It’s method acting to be able to be him. When you come in the studio with Tone and me, [the goal] is to become him. When you leave, go back to being you. In here, there is no identity other than Michael.”

6 | encore “They have instilled the values of Michael as an artist in these young performers and helped them — through their own gifts — embody the brilliance of Michael,” Wheeldon said. “Those are the magical powers right there.” Beyond training the Michaels, Rich and Tone used Jackson’s vocabulary to build original choreography strictly for the Michaels. With the exception of a section of the iconic “Thriller” number, none of the choreographic sequences are lifted from Jackson’s previous work. But a single character of Michael Jackson does not a full-fledged musical make. There is an entire world created to support the narrative of Jackson’s life, to portray the company of his Dangerous tour and to reveal the inner thoughts of the King of Pop. “It’s a story within a real human’s life told in an expansive and fantastic way,” said associate choreographer Michael Balderrama, who joined pre-Broadway to help develop MJ and now maintains the movement in every production around the world. “There are anchors like, ‘Oh my god, there’s the Michael Jackson moonwalk! There’s the Michael Jackson popping!’ But within that and surrounding it, the frame and the world itself gets to create something new.” That’s the magical power of Wheeldon. The full picture The idea was to embody Jackson’s essence — and invent, rather than re-create. “Listen, the joke was not lost on me,” Wheeldon confided. “I get it. I’m a white, British ballet choreographer. But I actually think it was part of the brilliance of the producing team and [book writer] Lynn [Nottage] to see that it could be a really dynamic and exciting collaboration to bring someone in from another style who understands dance and theatricality, of course, but isn’t necessarily going to feel obliged to re-create every single Michael move.” As immersed in Jackson’s world as Rich and Tone were, Wheeldon didn’t come to MJ as a superfan. He grew up with the Bad album, but was never the kid mimicking “Thriller” in his bedroom mirror. “I came with a great deal of respect,” Wheeldon said, “but also excitement at the challenge of finding ways to place the essence of Michael into a slightly different, new context.” Wheeldon devised ways to “capture the explosive power of [Michael’s] movement in the movement of the ensemble,” he said, combining hip-hop and popping with lyrical storytelling. Rather than feeling confined to Jackson’s movement, Wheeldon used it as a starting point. MJ follows the King of Pop in rehearsal for a concert tour that he insists must blow the world away and top anything he has done before. When a reporter and cameraperson from MTV show up to document Jackson’s process, memories flood him and the pressure mounts. With each musical number, Wheeldon asked himself, “What do we need to say in this number? What is the heartbeat of this number? What do we want the audience to take away?” With the opener, “Beat It,” Wheeldon needed to engage and reassure the audience. “You want to come out of the gate with a bang and say to your audience, ‘This is a show about Michael Jackson. This person obviously isn’t Michael Jackson,’ but we need you to believe that he is right away.” Which is why the routine heavily features the entire company dancing original Jackson moves — like body rolls and poses — mixed with Wheeldon’s. Later in the show, “Smooth Criminal” offers in-depth portrayals of more Jackson influences — from the Nicholas Brothers to Fred Astaire to Bob Fosse. “We were saying to the theatre audience: ‘This is a musical and we love musical theatre and Michael loves musical theatre — that’s how he created his dance style,’” Wheeldon explained. “Smooth Criminal,” in particular, also echoed the original music video — “the most Broadway, MGM musical of all Michael’s videos,” Wheeldon said. “Human Nature” leans furthest into the lyrical, ballet style of storytelling as the character MJ shows the audience his fantasy of being out in the world as an

everyday human being. “The emotion in that is this man who is trapped within the confines of his own mind,” Wheeldon said. “But also trapped in stardom.” Every number materialized through the collaboration of Wheeldon, Rich and Tone, Balderrama and the performers themselves. “I would create the map for the number, which is the story we’re telling,” Wheeldon explained. “[Rich and Tone] would go away and, knowing what that narrative is, weave Michael’s vocabulary into the number, work individually with the guys and come back. Then, I’d be like, ‘I need a little more of that here. And what if we go with that hit here,’ so, it became a bit of a tailoring situation.” Balderrama also lent his experience and eye. Having danced with Jackson in the short film Ghosts before transitioning to a storied Broadway career as a dancer and choreographer, Balderrama unified the worlds of arena tours and musical theater. “My experience working in all those different fields had me comfortable enough in all of those [styles] to be able to manage it once it was done,” said Balderrama. He also supervises the first rounds of casting for every production of MJ and teaches choreography to new cast members — with the exception of the Michaels, who learn their movement first from Rich and Tone before polishing with Balderrama. As the Broadway run goes strong (now in its third year) and more productions populate the globe, the individuality of dancers continually impacts the choreography. “We will adjust things in order to land the feel, frame, integrity and intention if it means it’s going to look better this way on this group than it did on that [group],” Balderrama said. MJ also continues to grow because of what Balderrama called “Chris-isms.” “Chris’ creative genius cannot be stopped,” Balderrama said. “There’s no spigot to turn it off. So there have been [changes] that happened on tour and then he’s like, ‘I want this put in on Broadway.’” None of these changes are major. MJ is still MJ. But just as throughout Jackson’s career he continued to iterate his own numbers from tour to tour and appearance to appearance, Wheeldon also likes to play. As Balderrama said, “There’s a maintenance to this, but at the same time, it’s an artistic endeavor.” Just like the King of Pop, this team keeps on, with the force. They don’t stop.
