Welcome to Les Misérables!
We’re thrilled to kick off the 2025–2026 Broadway in Indianapolis season with you! Whether you’ve been a loyal season subscriber for years or are joining us for the first time, welcome! Thanks to your incredible support, we’re celebrating another record-breaking year of subscriptions.
The continued growth of Broadway in Indianapolis allows us to bring productions straight from Broadway, earlier in their national tours. And this season is one of our most exciting yet.
Our 2025-2026 season is packed with unforgettable experiences: four Indianapolis premieres and the return of three Tony Award-winning blockbusters.
We begin with the powerful and timeless Les Misérables, followed by the return of the groundbreaking Hamilton. Then, get ready for the Indianapolis premiere of MJ The Musical, Broadway’s four-time Tony Award-winning hit (including Best Choreography), offering a dazzling behind-the-scenes look at Michael Jackson’s creative process leading up to his Dangerous world tour.
Next, The Wiz eases into town with its vibrant reimagining of The Wizard of Oz. This beloved musical first premiered on Broadway in 1974 and recently returned to the Marquis Theatre to rave reviews.
We’re also excited to include a play this season: CLUE. Based on the 1985 film and the classic board game, this hilarious whodunit will keep you laughing— and guessing—until the very end.
Then, after more than a decade, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast returns to Indianapolis in a brand-new production. Original members of the creative team have reunited to breathe new life into this timeless tale.
We’ll close the season with the smash-hit & Juliet. From the Emmy-winning writer of “Schitt’s Creek,” this bold and funny new musical re-imagines what might happen if Juliet chose her own ending. It’s a fresh, empowering twist on the classic love story.
I’d like to send a warm thank you to Clowes Memorial Hall for their longstanding collaboration and continued growth in the performing arts space. For years, Clowes has offered nothing but the best for its colleagues and attendees. I’m excited and honored to continue bringing Broadway shows to this beautiful venue.

A COMPLETELY CHEEKY, SOMEWHAT ACCURATE TIMELINE OF LES MISÉRABLES
STORY BY Broadway.com staff
Les Misérables is wowing audiences all over the place! But before you join the crusade, it’s time for a little history lesson. Wait, don’t leave! Even if you failed history class, you can get an A+ in Les Miz trivia by reading this fun (and mostly historically accurate) timeline of the story, from the classic Victor Hugo novel to the celebrated musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg.
1789
The French Revolution begins. This happens way before any of the stuff in Les Miz takes place, so if you overhear an old lady sitting in front of you in the theatre telling her husband the musical is about “the French Revolution,” go ahead and challenge her to a duel.
1802
Les Misérables author Victor Hugo was born in Besancon, France. His father is a high-ranking officer in Napoleon’s army, while his mother is supposedly sleeping with General Victor Lahorie—he is executed for plotting against Napoleon by the time little Victor turns 10.
1815
The Bourbon Restoration begins, and all those stuffy royals who were overthrown during the French Revolution return to power. This is also when all of the (fictional) stuff in Les Miz starts happening: Jean Valjean is released on parole, Cosette and Éponine are born, Fantine’s lover leaves (before autumn comes and all of those nighttime thunder tigers start showing up), etc.
1821
Napoleon Bonaparte dies, and those pesky Bourbons remain in power. This is right around the time Jean Valjean becomes the (fake) mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer, foiling Javert even though he looks practically the same, just with longer hair and a beard. 1824
Louis XVIII dies and is replaced by his brother, Charles X, who changes France’s political structure from a constitutional monarchy to a less democratic model. Boooo! In Les Miz, Jean Valjean raises Cosette as his own daughter, and she presumably does a lot of darning socks, needlepoint and other indoor activities. 1832
General Lamarque is dead! Revolutionaries build makeshift barricades all over the city and the June Rebellion begins—but things get crazy, French soldiers shoot a lot

of people, and the whole thing lasts less than 24 hours. Meanwhile, Victor Hugo finds himself stuck in an alley for hours, hiding from the crossfire. In the book and musical, this is the battle that kills Enjolras, Éponine and Gavroche (and well, uh, pretty much everyone).
1833
Well, the uprising fails and until 1848, when another revolution shakes things up, life is just as miserables as it was before. But in Les Miz, Cosette and Marius get married, hooray! Also, Jean Valjean dies. Noo! (In the book, Valjean passes away six months after the wedding, but he dies in the musical while Cosette is still wearing her wedding dress. You know, for drama.)
1862
Les Misérables is published. It’s 85 billion pages. (OK, fine, it’s 1,488 pages, same thing.) A mob of political bookworms storm the stores in Paris, and all 7,000 copies sell out in 24 hours. Hugo, meanwhile, is living in exile in Belgium ever since having a bit of a tiff with Napoleon III (he openly called the ruler a traitor to France).
1909
The first Les Misérables film adaptation is released, starring Maurice Costello as Jean Valjean and William V. Ranous as Javert. It paves the way for 14 subsequent movies and TV shows based on the powerful story.
1980
Composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyricists Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel create a French concept album based on Victor Hugo’s celebrated novel. Oui, it’s in French. The first stage adaptation is presented at the Palais des Sports, a Paris sports arena, where it runs for three months. A few years later, director Peter Farago gives Cameron Mackintosh the album and asks him if he would produce an English version.
1985
Les Misérables opens at the Barbican Centre in London, starring Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean, Roger Allam as Javert, Patti LuPone as Fantine, Michael Ball as Marius, Rebecca Caine as Cosette and Frances Ruffelle as Éponine. The reviews are comme ci, comme ça, but don’t worry—fans love it and it transfers to the West End’s Palace Theatre.
1987
Les Misérables opens at the Broadway Theatre, with Colm Wilkinson reprising the role of Jean Valjean. Frank Rich of The New York Times writes, “If anyone doubts that the contemporary musical theatre can flex its atrophied muscles and yank an audience right out of its seats, he need look no further than the Act I finale of Les Misérables.” C’est vrai! The production nabs nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, before transferring to the Imperial Theatre in 1990.
2006
A new production of the now-universally beloved musical opens at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre, only three years after the original New York production closed. Audiences prove that they’re not sick of hearing the people sing. What started as a six-month engagement turns into a two-year Broadway run.
2012
Universal Pictures releases Les Misérables on the big screen, starring Tony winner Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Oscar winner Russell Crowe as ruthless inspector Javert, Anne Hathaway as desperate mother Fantine, future Tony winner Aaron Tveit as Enjolras, future Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne as Marius and future Emmy winner Amanda Seyfried as Cosette. Helmed by Tom Hooper, the actors sing live on set, Hathaway cuts her hair for real (and wins an Oscar for her performance—not her haircut).
2014
Les Misérables returns to the Imperial Theatre. The new, restaged version of the beloved musical directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell features Ramin Karimloo as Jean Valjean (who reprised the role after starring in the Toronto production), Will Swenson as Javert, Caissie Levy as Fantine, Tony winner Nikki M. James as Éponine, Andy Mientus as Marius and Samantha Hill as Cosette.
2022
The current national tour Les Misérables launches in Cleveland, Ohio, and is still running strong. Audiences are ready to storm the barricades again!

HOW A FOUNDING FATHER, A FRUSTRATED BIOGRAPHER & A SWIMMING POOL INSPIRED THE HIP-HOP HIT HAMILTON
STORY BY Pete Croatto
After earning dizzying raves and armfuls of awards, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton has gone global. How did this original account of one of America’s Founding Fathers take the stage—and the world—by storm? It’s a story involving a Bronx DJ, a frustrated historian, and a swimming pool reading session you won’t find in any history book!
Though we’re not sure exactly when Alexander Hamilton was born, his effect on American history is undeniable. In a remarkably short period of time, Hamilton accomplished the following: fought in the American Revolution (where he was George Washington’s aide); led the efforts to reform the iffy Articles of Confederation; helped design the American government as outlined in the Constitution; and served as the country’s first Secretary of the Treasury. Hamilton died at age 47 on July 10, 1804, one day after being shot by his rival Aaron Burr in a duel.
Fast forward more than two centuries: Bronx-based DJ Kool Herc had a unique approach to the turntable. He talked over the records he spun, a trick he learned from the DJs in his native Jamaica. Kool Herc also mastered the self-described “Merry Go-Round,” using his two turntables “to switch back and forth repeatedly between two copies of the same record, extending the short drum break that the crowd most wanted to hear,” according to The History Channel. In August 1973, a big crowd was on hand to hear Kool Herc work his sister’s 18th birthday party. That’s how word of hip-hop, born at the rec room at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the West Bronx, spread.
Two decades later, Ron Chernow published his successful third book, Titan: The Life of John D. Rockefeller Sr., but the respected historian was experiencing mixed emotions. “I began to sense the danger of becoming stereotyped as the chronicler of American tycoons,” Chernow told the Biographers International
Organization. “When I finished a lecture, people in the audience would start shouting out, ‘Do Carnegie next! Do Vanderbilt next!’ as if I would go on knocking off Gilded Age moguls for the rest of my career.” Who would be his next subject?
Ultimately, Chernow decided to tackle the life of an important founding father. “Alexander Hamilton was the perfect transitional figure for my next book, because there would be financial history galore while also opening up vast new subjects for study: military history, constitutional law, foreign policy and dozens of other topics,” Chernow said. The 832-page Alexander Hamilton was not only a critical hit—Kirkus Reviews deemed the book “a model of the biographer’s art”—it became a New York Times bestseller. And for one Tony-winning musical theatre writer, it became a vacation read.
On a break from In the Heights, the show’s young creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, sojourned to Mexico with his future wife, Vanessa Nadal. Miranda cracked open Alexander Hamilton on an inflatable pool lounger. He was floored. “It was the fact that Hamilton wrote his way off the island [St. Croix] where he grew up,” he told Vogue. “That’s the hip-hop narrative.” The story also reminded Miranda of his father, Luis, a native of Puerto Rico who eventually became an adviser to Mayor Ed Koch. Convinced Hamilton’s life could become a hip-hop-influenced show, Miranda scoured Google to see if it had been done before. It had not.
“The idea of hip-hop being the music of the Revolution appealed to me immensely,’’ Miranda explained to T Magazine. That April, the White House invited Miranda to participate in a concert focused on “the American experience.” He used the platform to bust a four-minute rap about Hamilton’s first 20 years. The audience, which included the Obamas, were entranced. Miranda relayed to The New Yorker that “the President’s first reaction was to remark that [Treasury Secretary] Timothy Geithner had to see this.” Chernow, who eventually became Hamilton’s historical consultant, was serenaded by Miranda in his living room. “I think that’s the most astonishing thing I’ve ever heard in my life,” he said.
At the presidential soiree, Miranda had announced that he was working on a musical about Hamilton. That was true—kind of. What he performed was his only song. A year later, he’d only written one more. Miranda’s friend and In the Heights director Thomas Kail interceded: “You know, Lin, you took two years to write two songs. If we could crank it up a little, maybe we could see what we’ve got.” Six months later, Miranda performed 10 new songs at Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series. When legendary composer John Kander’s face “lit up” during the rap battles between Thomas Jefferson and Hamilton, Miranda knew his hunch was right.
After years of readings, workshops and struggle—Burr is tough to write; half the songs in Act One were jettisoned—a completed first act of The Hamilton Mixtape was performed at the Vassar Reading Festival in Poughkeepsie, New York. Miranda stuck to his guns, including casting Latino and Black actors as America’s forefathers. “Our goal was: This is a story about America then, told by America now, and we want to eliminate any distance—our story should look the way our country looks,” Miranda said. “Then we found the best people to embody these parts. I think it’s a very powerful statement without having to be a statement.”
With the majority of the original Off-Broadway cast in tow (Brian d’Arcy James departed to star in Something Rotten! and was succeeded by Jonathan Groff), anticipation was high as Hamilton arrived on Broadway. “It is a rare thing: not just a theatrical landmark, but a show that jolts our thinking about popular culture and casts new light on some of the most storied events in American history,” T Magazine proclaimed. Did crowds and critics agree? A very important audience member had already given the musical his seal of approval: After attending an early preview with daughters Malia and Sasha, President Obama gave the show a standing ovation.
Hamilton is coming to Old National Centre December 2-14.

The latest sell-out staged concert of Les Misérables, produced in London for nearly 250 record breaking performances, is now due to go on a World Tour starting in the autumn of 2024.
