THE HOBBY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

DEAR HOBBY CENTER FANS, Broadway’s Jazz Age spectacle has officially arrived at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts!

Direct from New York, The Great Gatsby is one of the few new musicals to enjoy a sustained run on Broadway. This dazzling reimagining of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s timeless American novel is brought to life with a bold contemporary score, dynamic choreography, and truly opulent design. It captures all the glamour of the Roaring ’20s while revealing the heart beneath the decadence.

Two-time Tony Award® nominee Eva Noblezada originated the role of Daisy in the Broadway production and returns to the show this week alongside Jeremy Jordan. We’re thrilled that Eva will join us here at the Hobby Center on April 17 for a special Beyond Broadway performance in Zilkha Hall, a unique opportunity to experience one of Broadway’s brightest stars up close.

While The Great Gatsby was not an immediate success when it was first published in 1925, it has since become one of the most enduring works in American literature, taught in classrooms across the country. That legacy makes it the perfect production to share with students across Houston.

This week, the Hobby Center will host a free high school matinee performance of The Great Gatsby for more than 2,500 students and teachers from 38 schools representing 14 districts. Building off the success of The Hamilton Project in March 2025, this special performance reflects our ongoing commitment to expanding access to live performance for young people. Students received TEKS-aligned curriculum guides designed to help educators connect the arts to classroom learning—all provided completely free of charge.

Our work to bring the community closer to the performing arts continues with the return of the ExxonMobil Theater District Open House on March 9. Last year marked the event’s return after a pause since 2019, welcoming 7,500 Houstonians for a full day of free performances, tours, and hands-on activities. Working together across the Theater District is an important part of our commitment to strengthening Houston’s performing arts ecosystem and expanding access to the arts for our community.

This year’s Open House will once again kick off Spring Break with nonstop activity across the Hobby Center campus and the entire Theater District from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and we hope you’ll join us.

From blockbusters to intimate experiences, student access programs, and community-wide celebrations, the Hobby Center is proud to bring the very best of Houston, the nation, and the world to our stages—just for you.

With gratitude always,

The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts

INTERPRETING THE DETAILS BEHIND THE GREAT GATSBY’S TONY AWARD-WINNING COSTUME DESIGN

Two-time Tony winner Linda Cho describes the creation of the lavish 1920s clothing for the musical adaptation of the beloved novel.

In adapting F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel The Great Gatsby for the stage, book writer Kait Kerrigan, composer Jason Howland and lyricist Nathan Tysen needed to conjure the world millions of readers have imagined and fallen in love with for the past century. The Great Gatsby is set in the Roaring ’20s Jazz Age on a fictionalized cove of Long Island. Costume designer Linda Cho, alongside associate designer Patrick Bevilacqua, needed the costumes to match the extravagance of the era and the dreams of its fans. Here, Cho discusses her vision for the Tony Award-winning wardrobe of the musical.

On her full-scale inspiration:

Linda Cho: The directive that I was given was: Let’s design The Great Gatsby of everyone’s imagination. The Great Gatsby conjures up visions of unchecked extravagance, glittering decadence, carefree flappers and longing beyond reason. I wanted to transport the audience into this 1920s world through the lens of our contemporary eyes. This means pushing these ideas even further than what might have been realistic — and blending modern and period silhouettes and sensibilities.

Daisy Buchanan

Cho: I wanted Daisy to look like she owns the space, to “the manner born” so to speak. The gauzy white curtains of the palatial room she occupies are echoed into her breezy handkerchief hems and waterfall shoulder drape. I wanted her look to evoke lazy summer, a dress to lay about in, drink champagne and nothing else.

Jay Gatsby

Cho: I have to credit [author F. Scott] Fitzgerald for [this color]. In the book, Tom makes a point of sneering at Gatsby’s pink suit. Also on a visual level I liked the romantic palette of soft pink alongside Daisy’s robin’s egg blue-colored chiffon dress in this scene where they finally come together after years of separation. Our narrator Nick’s suits are meant to evoke an older period with coarser fabrics and more practical details for a working man. In contrast, Tom and Jay would have bespoke tailors with classic lines — with Jay making bolder color (pink) and fabric (glossier) choices.

Gilda Gray

Cho: I wanted a dramatic silhouette that harkens back to a slightly earlier era and the Poiret evening coats of World War I since Gatsby is trying to re-create the past when he first meets Daisy. For the headdress, I was inspired by Paul Tate DePoo’s set image of the Art Deco arches in the background.

WHAT WOULD SOME LIKE IT HOT SOUND LIKE WITHOUT ORCHESTRATIONS?

The sound you hear from the stage isn’t solely by a composer it comes from a whole music team.

A flute trills. A trumpet blasts. A harp cascades. The strings begin to tremor, the brass section clamors and the star begins to sing. Whether seated inside a theater or snuggled up with a cast album, audiences know the sounds of the musicals they love. It’s a balanced blend of voices and instruments (and sometimes tap shoes), melodies and harmonies and rhythms that create the complete soundscape of a musical. And though the basis of any score is written by a composer and lyricist, the textures and richness, the sweeping and soaring, the blaring and gutting are contributions of the lesser recognized orchestrator.

Orchestrators take the initial skeleton of a song from the composer, and through collaborative discussions about musical genre, time period, storytelling within the show’s narrative, location and budget, create the complete body of what audiences then think of as the song.

“Orchestrators are responsible for conveying a composer’s ideas and intentions to an audience,” said Bryan Carter, a Tony-nominated orchestrator of Some Like It Hot

“When done correctly, the collaboration between the composer who writes the songs and the orchestrator who illustrates them is so seamless that people can’t tell where one starts and one ends,” added Carter’s Tony-nominated coorchestrator Charlie Rosen. Songwriters pen the foundation, arrangers expand the songs with architecture — “adding an intro, writing dance-break music to fit choreography, coming up with underscoring within the song for scenes,” Rosen explains — and orchestrators compose the décor, using everything from sweeping strings to gritty electric guitar.

“Orchestrators dedicate their lives to the study of musical scores and recordings to have the largest possible palette of sounds, references and ideas necessary to evoke a desired emotional response from the listener,” said Carter. In fact, emotion is a top priority for musical-theater orchestrators.

And orchestration doesn’t always mean “an orchestra.” With the synthesizers, drum machines and keyboards that some shows demand, orchestrators experiment with musical instruments as well as knobs and dials.

Technically speaking, an orchestrator writes down the notes for each instrument to play. But artistically, those notes are informed by what the orchestrator sees and hears onstage. Should that mournful sound be a violin or an oboe? What will complement the vocal soloist? Is this a big ensemble moment that needs the full brass of the orchestra behind them? Those are the choices orchestrators make.

As Rosen put it: “Next time you’re moved by the instruments accompanying your favorite show, mentally tip your hat to the orchestrator and learn their name because they have defined the sound of Broadway for generations.”

Rosen and Carter won the 2023 Tony Award for Best Orchestrations for Some Like It Hot. Below, they describe creating the orchestrations for the title song of the musical. Scan the QR code to hear their composers’ audio demo alongside the final, orchestrated recordings to reveal how the full and final sound of a musical gets made.

“Some Like It Hot” from Some Like It Hot Orchestrations by Charlie Rosen and Bryan Carter Music by Marc Shaiman Lyrics by March Shaiman and Scott Wittman

Bryan Carter: Some Like It Hot is a show about a professional touring band — which means, dramaturgically, there are several moments that feature virtuosic musicianship. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are excellent at communicating their musical references and influences. Charlie and I were told to capture the sounds of “the Big Band age” and “Golden Age of the MGM musical.” Some Like It Hot is heavily influenced by the Big Band sounds of [Count] Basie and [Duke] Ellington. Though we have a large orchestra by today’s [Broadway] standards, we’re still 50 percent short of the traditional eight-horn configuration of those aforementioned bands — although at times, Ellington used six horns. Charlie and I had to be extremely creative with how we used the brass section. We tried just about every trick in the proverbial “orchestration handbook” to make the brass section feel larger than it actually is.

Rosen: We are absolutely taking specific references and putting our own contemporary spin on them. For example, making a choice like using tuba to double a bass line evokes more of a 1920s-era Big Band before the upright bass was more in vogue. The use of banjo instead of guitar might evoke a more traditional Broadway sound. The clarinet leading the saxophone section instead of an alto sax might evoke more of a New Orleans speakeasy feel.

Carter: Because Some Like It Hot ends the first act, there are orchestrational tools that we utilized to give the song a feeling of completeness. For example, the ensemble builds to the end of the song with a fairly traditional Big Band “shout” motif and concludes with a tight button that consists of a large, harmonized spread between the highest note (lead trumpet) and lowest note (bass and barisax). This sound has a powerful impact and sends the audience into intermission with a smile on their face.
