THE HOBBY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

DEAR HOBBY CENTER FRIENDS,

Welcome to the Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center presentation of Some Like It Hot.

This show has it all: big sound, sharp wit, dazzling moves, and that unmistakable Broadway sparkle. This is the kind of show that reminds you why you came to the theater in the first place. I’ve found myself more than a little in love with this title, which is why it’s stayed at the top of my list since its Broadway debut. Inspired by the beloved 1959 film, it carries the nostalgia of a classic, while speaking to audiences today.

What I love most is the joy of watching a company completely own the stage—the orchestra’s rhythms lifting the room, choreography filling every corner, and comedy that has an entire audience laughing together. It’s Broadway doing what Broadway does best: sending you into the lobby smiling wider than when you walked in.

While touring productions bring us the excitement of the national stage, the Hobby Center is also a gathering place for Houston artists and organizations.

Through our Arts Partners program, local arts organizations return to the Hobby Center year after year. That ongoing relationship gives them access to more tools to excel in their work. Since its launch in 2023, the Hobby Center’s Arts Partners program has supported 16 local arts organizations in presenting 100+ performances, connecting them with 43,000+ attendees to date and strengthening their ability to attract, retain, and grow audiences over time.

Because these groups share a home, they meet, collaborate, and lift one another up. Artists attend each other’s work, partnerships form, and audiences begin to recognize familiar faces across very different artistic programs. It has become a true crossroads for some of the most exciting creative work happening in Houston.

Here are a few of our Arts Partners appearing soon:

• DA CAMERA presents Parker Quartet with cellist Raman Ramakrishnan, March 28

• Indo-American Association presents Kabir: Music of Oneness, March 29

• Performing Arts Houston presents John C. Reilly Is Mister Romantic, April 2–3

• Houston Contemporary Dance Company presents Toward Joy, April 11

Each brings a different facet of Houston’s artistic life into the same venue, allowing audiences to discover something new simply by showing up.

Thank you for being here for today’s performance. Enjoy a show that reminds us just how joyful Broadway can be!

Gratefully,

The Hobby Center for the Performing

WHAT WOULD SOME LIKE IT HOT SOUND LIKE WITHOUT ORCHESTRATIONS?

The sound you hear from the stage isn’t solely by a composer it comes from a whole music team.

A flute trills. A trumpet blasts. A harp cascades. The strings begin to tremor, the brass section clamors and the star begins to sing. Whether seated inside a theater or snuggled up with a cast album, audiences know the sounds of the musicals they love. It’s a balanced blend of voices and instruments (and sometimes tap shoes), melodies and harmonies and rhythms that create the complete soundscape of a musical. And though the basis of any score is written by a composer and lyricist, the textures and richness, the sweeping and soaring, the blaring and gutting are contributions of the lesser recognized orchestrator.

Orchestrators take the initial skeleton of a song from the composer, and through collaborative discussions about musical genre, time period, storytelling within the show’s narrative, location and budget, create the complete body of what audiences then think of as the song.

“Orchestrators are responsible for conveying a composer’s ideas and intentions to an audience,” said Bryan Carter, a Tony-nominated orchestrator of Some Like It Hot.

“When done correctly, the collaboration between the composer who writes the songs and the orchestrator who illustrates them is so seamless that people can’t tell where one starts and one ends,” added Carter’s Tony-nominated coorchestrator Charlie Rosen. Songwriters pen the foundation, arrangers expand the songs with architecture — “adding an intro, writing dance-break music to fit

choreography, coming up with underscoring within the song for scenes,” Rosen explains — and orchestrators compose the décor, using everything from sweeping strings to gritty electric guitar.

“Orchestrators dedicate their lives to the study of musical scores and recordings to have the largest possible palette of sounds, references and ideas necessary to evoke a desired emotional response from the listener,” said Carter. In fact, emotion is a top priority for musical-theater orchestrators.

And orchestration doesn’t always mean “an orchestra.” With the synthesizers, drum machines and keyboards that some shows demand, orchestrators experiment with musical instruments as well as knobs and dials.

Technically speaking, an orchestrator writes down the notes for each instrument to play. But artistically, those notes are informed by what the orchestrator sees and hears onstage. Should that mournful sound be a violin or an oboe? What will complement the vocal soloist? Is this a big ensemble moment that needs the full brass of the orchestra behind them? Those are the choices orchestrators make.

As Rosen put it: “Next time you’re moved by the instruments accompanying your favorite show, mentally tip your hat to the orchestrator and learn their name because they have defined the sound of Broadway for generations.”

Rosen and Carter won the 2023 Tony Award for Best Orchestrations for Some Like It Hot. Below, they describe creating the orchestrations for the title song of the musical. “Some Like It Hot” from Some Like It Hot Orchestrations by Charlie Rosen and Bryan Carter Music by Marc Shaiman Lyrics by March Shaiman and Scott Wittman

Bryan Carter: Some Like It Hot is a show about a professional touring band — which means, dramaturgically, there are several moments that feature virtuosic musicianship. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are excellent at communicating their musical references and influences. Charlie and I were told to capture the sounds of “the Big Band age” and “Golden Age of the MGM musical.” Some Like It Hot is heavily influenced by the Big Band sounds of [Count] Basie and [Duke] Ellington. Though we have a large orchestra by today’s [Broadway] standards, we’re still 50 percent short of the traditional eight-horn configuration of those aforementioned bands — although at times, Ellington used six horns. Charlie and I had to be extremely creative with how we used the brass section. We tried just about every trick in the proverbial “orchestration handbook” to make the brass section feel larger than it actually is.

Rosen: We are absolutely taking specific references and putting our own contemporary spin on them. For example, making a choice like using tuba to double a bass line evokes more of a 1920s-era Big Band before the upright bass was more in vogue. The use of banjo instead of guitar might evoke a more traditional Broadway sound. The clarinet leading the saxophone section instead of an alto sax might evoke more of a New Orleans speakeasy feel.

Carter: Because Some Like It Hot ends the first act, there are orchestrational tools that we utilized to give the song a feeling of completeness. For example, the ensemble builds to the end of the song with a fairly traditional Big Band “shout” motif and concludes with a tight button that consists of a large, harmonized spread between the highest note (lead trumpet) and lowest note (bass and barisax). This sound has a powerful impact and sends the audience into intermission with a smile on their face.

KEEPING SIX A HIT

Producers Kenny Wax and Kevin McCollum discuss the appeal of the majestic musical.

SIX opened on Broadway with a bang. Even though the show was set to open on March 12, 2020 (the fateful day that Broadway shut down), when it officially opened on October 3, 2021, SIX had already filled the Lena Horne Theatre (then the Brooks Atkinson) to over 100 percent capacity in its first week. Audiences were clamoring for the queens.

In the spring of 2022, the musical penned by newcomers Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss earned eight Tony Award nominations, including one for Best Musical, and won Best Score and Best Costume Design of a Musical.

SIX didn’t just begin as a hit — it has continued to be one. But what exactly is the fuss about?

The joy and celebratory atmosphere inherent in the pop-concert style helped launch the show with strength, said producers Kenny Wax and Kevin McCollum. As did the buzz from its London and pre-Broadway Chicago mounting.

But what bolstered that power and created longevity, they said, is the show’s wide appeal. “In its construction, as an 80-minute nonlinear musical, it breaks certain theater taboos but has managed to connect with a younger audience due to it being so fantastically whip-smart funny, clever, original and self-aware,” Wax told Broadway News. And while young audiences have certainly latched onto SIX it’s not to the exclusion of other demographics. As McCollum said, “This is a show for everyone.”

Of course, it’s been necessary to communicate that in the production’s branding. “The energy in our theater is off the charts and all of our messaging has explored different ways of saying that to different audiences,” McCollum said. “Theater is a destination, and we find ways to keep our audiences engaged with mementos and special moments.”

What’s more, the musical encourages repeat customers — and sees a lot of them. “Take any straw poll from a Broadway performance of SIX and you can be assured that many of the audiences are seeing the show for at least the second time,” Wax said. “We are in a constant dialogue with our fans both old and new, and we endeavor to keep the show on the tip of everyone’s tongue,” McCollum added.

SIX has also tended to change the full-time cast of six queens at once, as they did in December 2022 and 2023. “There aren’t any hard and fast rules — actually on occasions one or two people have left the company due to offers on other shows and have been replaced out of necessity,” Wax said. That said, he continued, “As a general rule, we feel that the best results occur when a full company can rehearse the show together from day one.”

“Anytime you have the opportunity to bring multiple queens in at the same time,” McCollum added, “you’re creating an environment which allows them to grow together as a company.”

“Recently we brought the front-line queens from the Aragon Company (the first touring company) into the Lena Horne because they were so exceptional and worked amazingly well as a team,” Wax said. “It’s the wonder of the collective performance that keeps the show going alongside its empowering message which is the strength of the show.”

In addition to that message, the music continues to spread.

“Across all platforms, the songs from the show have streamed almost one billion times,” Wax said. “That is incredible reach for a mid-scale show without the blockbuster marketing budgets of other shows.”

“As one of the original U.K. producers, I find it incredible that our very British story about six women who were all married to the same man has found an audience in the U.S., not only in New York but also across America with the success of the touring productions,” Wax said. “But of course, the show is about far more than ‘ex wives.’ It’s really about contemporary women who are prepared to fix each other’s crowns and support each other. This is the true message of SIX.”
