THE HOBBY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

DEAR HOBBY CENTER FRIENDS,

Welcome to the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts and to the return of SIX as part of the Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center season. We are thrilled to present this fan-favorite musical, which is one of the most joyful and high-energy experiences on Broadway today.

Part of what makes SIX special is its incredible sense of momentum. In just 80 minutes, the show races forward with infectious melodies, bold personalities and storyline. It’s the kind of musical that audiences walk out of humming and the score stays with you. The show also reflects an exciting moment in the evolution of musical theater. Since premiering in 2017, SIX has helped usher in a wave of productions that center on women’s stories.

While the performers you see on stage bring this remarkable story to life, every event at the Hobby Center is also shaped by an extraordinary group behind the scenes: the volunteers who make the Hobby Center’s work possible.

They represent Houston: retirees, teachers, professionals like attorneys and doctors, students, and so many others, who share a passion for the performing arts and for serving their community. During the 2024–2025 Season, 375 volunteers contributed more than 41,000 hours, helping welcome audiences through the doors. From greeting patrons with a warm hello to assisting guests who need guidance to their seats, they ensure that everyone feels cared for and at home.

Among these volunteers is our dedicated Access Team, whose members support patrons with disabilities and anyone who would like additional help navigating our campus. Their goal is to help ensure that more people can experience the magic of live performance with comfort and confidence, reflecting the Hobby Center’s commitment to being as open and welcoming as possible.

That same commitment to access extends to our work with young people across Houston. On Saturday, May 2, we will host our annual gala in support of our mission, including our growing education programs, which will bring nearly 40,000 students to the Hobby Center this season for free performances including transportation. This spectacular evening, chaired by Mady and Ken Kades with Honorary Chair Margaret Alkek Williams, will feature a showcase performance by Tony Award winner Darren Criss and celebrate Rob Doty’s leadership as Board Chair from 2021 to 2025.

At its heart, theater invites us to learn more about ourselves and our world through stories shared on stage that we experience together. Thank you for joining us today and for being part of the Hobby Center community as we continue bringing the best of Houston, the nation, and the world through the performing arts to our stages.

With gratitude,

The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts

THE STORY OF SIX: LUCY MOSS AND TOBY MARLOW’S EMPOWERING BROADWAY MUSICAL

Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow created SIX, a musical that celebrates the compelling stories of Henry VIII’s six wives while delving into themes of empowerment and representation in the theater. The musical opens with the iconic refrain: “Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived.” Through this catchy hook, the wives take the mic to reclaim their identities from the shadow of their infamous spouse, remixing five hundred years of historical heartbreak into an exuberant celebration of 21st-century girl power. The allfemale cast is backed by an equally dynamic all-female band, the “Ladies in Waiting,” further enhancing the show’s infectious energy and contemporary flair.

As SIX developed, Moss reflected on its impact on audiences. “It’s so humbling and inspiring really to see so many people getting excited and getting involved,” she said. “Our amazing queendom is particularly good about getting creative. It feels so wonderful to have made something that inspires people.” This sense of community and creativity is a vital part of the production, fostering an environment where diverse voices can be heard and celebrated. Marlow expressed deep pride in the project, stating, “It’s unbelievable. I can’t even begin to put into words how proud I am. To go from those conversations to literally making history on Broadway is pretty cool.” This journey from initial discussions to a fully realized production illustrates the power of their friendship and collaboration. Marlow made history as the first nonbinary person to win a

Tony Award for Original Score, highlighting the significance of this achievement within the context of the theater industry and its ongoing evolution toward inclusivity.

The mission behind SIX is clear: to amplify voices that are often overlooked in traditional narratives. “We wrote these songs because we wanted to give a funny voice to women and nonbinary people who are our friends, and it’s just so exciting to recognize them,” Moss said, emphasizing their commitment to representation. The musical not only entertains but also encourages audiences to engage with history in a meaningful way, prompting reflection on how stories are told and whose voices are included.

With SIX, Moss and Marlow invite audiences to celebrate history in a fresh and engaging manner—full of laughter, music, and creativity. Each song is a modern anthem that allows the wives to express their individuality, from the fierce determination of Anne Boleyn to the resilient spirit of Catherine Parr. The choreography and melodies resonate with audiences, making the show not just a retelling of history, but a powerful commentary on female empowerment and agency.

Their work showcases the joy of blending history with pop culture. By merging theatrical storytelling with contemporary music styles, SIX transcends the traditional boundaries of musical theater, inviting a new generation to engage with the stories of these historical figures. Ultimately, SIX is not just a musical; it is a celebration of resilience, identity and the vibrant spirit of women. By giving these historical figures a modern voice, the production invites audiences to engage with their stories in a fresh and entertaining way. This approach not only entertains but also sparks conversations about the importance of diverse narratives in theater, making it a significant addition to the contemporary musical landscape.

IT’S NO MYSTERY: HOW CLUE WENT FROM BOARD GAME TO SHOWSTOPPER

It began in wartime England when blackout curtains kept the world in shadow and imagination was the best escape. Anthony Pratt, a British musician working in a munitions factory, spent his nights dreaming up a game inspired by the murder mystery parties he used to play piano for, elegant affairs where guests strutted through drawing rooms accusing each other of fictional crimes. In 1947 he patented the idea, calling it Murder! Two years later Waddingtons released it in England as Cluedo and Parker Brothers brought it to America as Clue. The premise was simple yet irresistible: a mansion full of suspects and a single mystery to solve.

Clue turned deduction into drama. Each player became a character with secrets and motives and the board itself became a stage. In the gray years after the war it offered something the world needed: wit and playfulness. Soon those characters, Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, Professor Plum and Mrs. Peacock, escaped the game box and entered pop culture. Over time the game evolved through new editions and digital updates but the essence stayed the same. When toy giant Hasbro took over the brand it ensured that Clue remained a household staple and a symbol of clever fun.

Written in 1993, Clue The Musical transforms the familiar mansion into a world of music, movement and suspicion. It is part musical comedy, part live action game night. The show keeps the central question of who did it, where and with what but reshuffles the cards at every performance. With 216 possible endings no two nights are alike. The audience gets to play detective, guessing alongside a gleefully unreliable cast of suspects. It is theater as game and game as theater, which makes perfect sense for a story that has always invited participation.

The jump from parlor game to stage works because Clue was theatrical from the start. Every roll of the dice created suspense and every accusation drew laughter. The game’s built in drama, with its vivid characters and contained setting, was practically begging for footlights. On stage the mansion becomes a playground for double takes and big personalities. Miss Scarlet slinks through the library, Colonel Mustard polishes his charm and Professor Plum overanalyzes everything. Even the rope and revolver get their moment in the spotlight.

Underneath the comedy is the same spark that made the game timeless. Pratt created Clue in a dark era, offering people a way to connect and laugh. The musical keeps that spirit alive, replacing dice rolls with choreography and suspicion with showmanship. More than 75 years after its invention, Clue still delights in its contradictions. It is about murder but full of life, about deceit yet built on play. Whether around a table or under bright lights, it continues to invite all to join the game.

Clue is playing at the Hobby Center June 9 - 14. For tickets visit BroadwayAtTheHobbyCenter.com. For more in-depth interviews, up-to-date news and show reviews on Broadway, visit Broadway.com.

Houston, TX, is built on the ancestral lands of the Atakapa-Ishak, Karankawa, Akokisa, and Bidai peoples, who inhabited the Gulf Coast region for thousands of years. Other groups, including the Sana, Caddo and Coahuiltecans, also lived in the area or utilized it, with over 50 Indigenous nations historically present in the region. The entire team of SIX acknowledges these indigenous communities, the original stewards of this land, their elders both past and present, as well as future generations.

Please be advised that smoke, haze, and strobe lights are used during the performance.
