FABIOLA CARABALLO QUIJADA FEELS ‘CONFIDENT’ STARRING IN THE & JULIET NORTH AMERICAN TOUR STORY BY

Alexandra Pierson Newsflash Romeo, your ex is sweeping the nation. Only getting "stronger" on Broadway, & Juliet also kicked off the second year of its North American tour, beginning at the SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center in Sacramento, California on September 23. Fabiola Caraballo Quijada, the 2025 Jimmy Awards winner for Best Performance by an Actress, is owning her power starring as Juliet. The Broadway Show had a front row seat during rehearsals and her pre-show routine on opening night. “This is my first professional experience ever,” she said, talking to the camera while simultaneously doing vocal warm-ups and applying her makeup. We love a multitasking queen! “I’ve never done anything like this before, in this magnitude. The lead is crazy! But I really think that it was God doing all of his magic. He just gave me so, so many good things this year.” & Juliet flips the script on the greatest love story ever told, imagining what would happen if Juliet hadn’t ended it all over Romeo and instead got a second chance at life and love—on her own terms. The show’s score is packed with Max Martinpenned pop anthems and features a book by David West Read, direction by Luke Sheppard and choreography by Jennifer Weber. RIVERDANCE 30 – THE NEW GENERATION: PRINCIPAL DANCER ANNA MAI FITZPATRICK ON CHOOSING IRISH DANCE AND NEVER LOOKING BACK STORY BY

CQ Quintana Evolving from a standout seven-minute interval performance at Eurovision, Riverdance first swept the world stage in 1995 with its striking blend of modern and traditional Irish dance and music. Originally led by principal dancers Michael Flatley and Jean Butler with stirring composition by Bill Whelan and direction by John McColgan, the show has evolved from a short-form celebration of the Irish diaspora to a full-scale global phenomenon, advancing the possibilities of Irish dance—once mainly seen in competition in Ireland and the U.K.—in both form and presentation. Today, the iconic show continues with Riverdance 30 – The New Generation, a 30th anniversary production with a fresh cast, updated choreography and design that uplifts a spirit of multiculturalism and pays homage to the original.

Anna Mai Fitzpatrick joined the cast of Riverdance in 2017, and now serves as the touring production’s principal dancer, a role she stepped into in 2020, but her love of Irish dance began many years before—as a child in her hometown of Meath, Ireland. “It all started when I was four years old,” she says. “I began Irish dancing locally in my primary school. Every Friday. And my mom took me to see the show [Riverdance] when I was about five or six. From there, I chose Irish dancing over everything else.” That early commitment was reinforced at home. “My mom was the initial inspiration for sure. She did ballet, and she was an athlete when she was young and she really poured her heart and soul into letting her kids try to achieve their dreams,” she says. “I wouldn’t have the life I have if it wasn’t for her.” As a matter of fact, Fitzpatrick’s brother Fergus [Fitzpatrick] joined her childhood dance class shortly after she enrolled and they are still working alongside each other in Riverdance today! “It’s so special. When myself and Fergus finished our first tour, that was the first time we’d really been away from home. We both toured China [when] I just turned 19.” Joining Riverdance shifted her relationship to Irish dance. She danced competitively for 16 years and won multiple major championships, including the All-Ireland Championships, Great Britain Championships and the British Nationals. “Once I joined the show, my dreams altered a bit,” she notes. “I love being part of a team and a culture. You go from competition, where the people you’re dancing beside you’re against, into an environment where the people you’re dancing beside are there to help each other.” Representing Irish culture is central to how Fitzpatrick approaches the show.“We call ourselves ambassadors for Ireland and for Irish culture, and although that is the core of Riverdance, I also love the fact that there’s a Spanish flamenco [dancer], an American tap dancer and folk dancers from Eastern Europe. There’s dancers and musicians from all across the world. It’s so multicultural. Yet I still feel so much Irish pride when I perform.” Though it’s difficult to choose a favorite moment in the show, Fitzpatrick particularly loves performing “The Countless Cathleen.” “It’s the first number that you see the female lead, and it’s so empowering.” Even after years with Riverdance, the production continues to evolve.“The show has been ever-changing since I’ve been in it,” says Fitzpatrick. “This new version, The New Generation, is the first time the cast are younger than Riverdance itself. So, that brings a freshness to the stage. There are new costumes, new stage design, but the cast is really the main difference.” On any given night of the tour, there are different dancers performing in different numbers, which the principal dancer describes as “good for your brain.” Riverdance’s endurance, Fitzpatrick believes, is no accident.“If a show is here for 30 years, there’s a reason for it. And this version, in particular, you’ve got really driven people that have lived their whole life with the show, looking up to the show and wanting to leave their mark on it. And I hope that [audiences] leave feeling inspired.” As Fitzpatrick describes it, “the magic of Riverdance is that it’s such a wholesome show that touches on every human emotion. And depending on where one audience member is sitting or what they’re going through in their life, you don’t know what’s gonna resonate with them. That’s such a powerful thing to be able to do for someone’s life.”
