COMPOSER ALAN SILVESTRI’S MUSIC POWERS BACK TO THE FUTURE’S STAGE TRANSFORMATION
STORY BY Broadway.com Staff
Alan Silvestri, the well-known composer behind some of Hollywood’s most recognizable scores, has brought his musical talents to the stage with Back to the Future: The Musical. The stage adaptation of the 1985 sci-fi adventure film has engaged audiences in both London’s West End and Broadway, with a touring production now making its way across the United States.
With over 100 film credits to his name, Silvestri has built a career defined by creating memorable scores that deepen narrative impact. His long-standing collaboration with film director Robert Zemeckis has produced memorable music for movies like Forrest Gump, The Polar Express and the Back to the Future trilogy. Silvestri’s work has earned him two Oscar nominations, two Golden Globe nominations, four Grammy Awards and two Emmy Awards. He has also composed standout scores for films across genres, from action blockbusters like Predator, The Abyss and The Avengers, to family features like The Croods and Lilo & Stitch Silvestri’s partnership with Grammy-winning songwriter Glen Ballard has resulted in well-known songs such as “Believe” from The Polar Express and “Butterfly Fly Away” from Hannah Montana: The Movie. This collaboration has also played a vital role in the development of Back to the Future: The Musical.

Adapting the Back to the Future film for the stage was a substantial undertaking. Silvestri and Ballard worked closely to translate the film’s high-energy adventure and heartfelt moments into a theatrical experience. The musical’s book was written by Bob Gale, who co-wrote the original film’s screenplay, ensuring continuity with the movie’s story and characters. The stage production was directed by Tony-winning director John Rando, whose experience in musical theater contributed to the show’s dynamic presentation. The musical first premiered in Manchester, England, in 2020 before moving to London’s West End in 2021. It made its Broadway debut at the Winter Garden Theatre in 2023 and is currently on a North American tour.
The musical retains the original film’s most recognizable songs, such as “The Power of Love,” written by Huey Lewis and the News, and “Johnny B. Goode,” written by Chuck Berry, while incorporating original music composed by Silvestri and Ballard. These new songs expand on key character moments, increasing the emotional depth of the production. Songs like “It's Only a Matter of Time” and “For the Dreamers” showcase Silvestri’s talent for memorable melodies and broad orchestral arrangements.
In developing the new material, Silvestri and Ballard worked closely with the creative team to ensure the music supported the show’s time-traveling narrative. Each song was designed to connect with the characters’ emotional journeys, blending rock ’n’ roll energy with heartfelt ballads. Thus, the musical’s score paid tribute to the film’s familiar sound while introducing new life to the story on stage. Reflecting on the transition from composing for film to writing for the stage, Silvestri remarked to Broadway.com that “the interesting thing is, it’s not as much of a difference as you might think because in the end, it’s all about storytelling. It’s all about music assisting the telling of a story. And from that point of view, it’s identical. The lovely thing about the theater as opposed to the film world is, you’ve gotta go, go, go to get the film ready, and you record it, and then it’s out there forever. Whereas [the cast] creates this show every night with the magnificent musicians. So, there’s an interesting aspect to theater that doesn’t exist in cinema. But the storytelling is identical.”
Incorporating signature moments from the film posed a creative challenge. The production employs striking visual effects to recreate pivotal scenes such as the DeLorean’s time-travel sequences with the iconic car’s onstage appearance capturing the original film’s thrilling energy. Additionally, clever stagecraft enables Marty McFly’s guitar performance of “Johnny B. Goode” to echo the memorable movie scene while adding fresh choreography to engage the audience.
Silvestri’s new compositions complement the show’s nostalgic elements, blending fresh material with established musical motifs from the original film’s score. For example, orchestral variations on the memorable Back to the Future theme appear throughout the musical, reinforcing key dramatic moments.
The show’s design team worked to balance visual spectacle with musical depth. Lighting effects, dynamic projections and seamless scene transitions ensure the production captures the fast-paced energy of the original film. The score’s blend of rock, pop and traditional theatrical elements reflects both the 1980s aesthetic and the timeless themes of family, friendship and second chances.
Silvestri’s contribution to Back to the Future: The Musical highlights his adaptability as a composer. His ability to craft emotionally resonant and varied scores has played a key role in bringing this timeless story to life on stage. The musical continues to introduce new generations to the story’s enduring themes while celebrating the legacy of the original film.

INFUSING NEW YORK CITY INTO THE CHOREOGRAPHY OF HELL’S KITCHEN
Tony-nominated choreographer Camille A. Brown discusses rooting her movement for the new Alicia Keys musical in the city’s culture.
STORY BY Ruthie Fierberg
Camille A. Brown’s choreography for the new musical Hell’s Kitchen is kinetic, athletic and rhythmic. That’s not unheard of for the choreographer who earned Tony Award nominations for her movement in Choir Boy, the 2022 revival of for colored girls, for which she also earned a nod for her direction, Hell’s Kitchen and the 2024 revival of Gypsy. But what is particularly fresh for the production inspired by 16-time Grammy winner Alicia Keys’ life (and set to songs by Keys) is the New York-ness of Brown’s choreography.
As the musical’s title implies, Hell’s Kitchen (named after the midtown Manhattan neighborhood where both Keys and the show’s protagonist, Ali, grew up) is very specifically set in New York City. The production’s scenic design, however, leans into simplicity, relying largely on steel scaffolding. Therefore, it counts on other elements, such as choreography, to create the atmosphere of its titular district. And Brown’s movement delivers that NYC vibe in spades.

“I’m originally from New York, more specifically Jamaica, Queens. To create this world of New York City, I’m pulling from my own experiences,” Brown told Broadway News. “I started taking the subway at 13 because I went to LaGuardia High School. And so that was really an opportunity for me to see that people had their crews, and it was so fascinating to me that each crew was completely different from the other. They had a way of functioning; everybody had their own vibe. It was important for me to have those kinds of differences within the community [of Hell’s Kitchen].”
Ali, whose crew includes best friends Tiny and Jessica, moves differently than Knuck (Ali’s crush) and his. “There are all kinds of choices being made every day in New York City on the street,” Brown explained. “So what are those kinds of choices artistically that we can bring on the stage that are really influenced by New York City and the hustle and bustle and structure of the chaos, in a way?”
Aside from creating movement lexicons for groups of characters, Brown said there is a certain carriage and attitude that has to come through in the company’s bodies. “It’s kind of like a New York accent,” she said. “You hear when somebody’s from New York. There’s just swagger, sometimes a vibe that you get. If somebody says, ‘I’m from New York City,’ [the response is] like, ‘Oh, I felt that.’”
It’s important that everyone onstage emanates that feeling, whether they are the focus of a number or the background. Which brings us to another unique element of Brown’s vision: Hell’s Kitchen essentially features a singing ensemble and a dancing ensemble — a practice that went largely by the wayside in the 1960s.
“I was really happy to have an opportunity to tell [a] story through the bodies of dancers,” Brown said. She noted that since moving to Broadway from the concert dance world, she worked “mostly with actors” on the shows she has contributed to. “There’ve been some dancers in there, but as a course, this seems very back in the day where they had a specific dance ensemble. So this is really the first time on Broadway that I’m working with a dance ensemble — and that’s so exciting.”
“I learned so much from working with actors,” she added. “It made me a better thinker, choreographer, director, communicator.” But it’s been a new adventure to be able to choreograph for ensemblists who don’t necessarily have to sing at the same time; it changes the type of movement she can demand from a performer, and it impacts what and how much of Ali’s story she’s able to tell and how much of Keys’ music she can amplify.
“We’re dealing with the music and the lyrics of what is being said, but we’re also trying to track Ali’s story or whoever she is in connection with at the time. I’m also trying to track the rhythm inside the rhythm. I’m trying to track the orchestrations and what they are doing,” Brown explained. “I’m continuing to layer, layer, layer.”
“How can we fully see the music in everybody’s body?”
For that, Brown summons her own style — which is a mix of dances from her own training and her choreographic influences. “It’s important for me to lead with my voice,” she said. “You see in the movement that could be connected to New York and the vibe. … You also have some elements of Step and Juba dance, which are rooted within the African diaspora and that vernacular.”
“There’s a world of [the song] ‘Kaleidoscope,’” Brown continued. “It has to do with Ali’s connection to the piano and to her future teacher that she just witnessed play the piano for the first time. And so dancers then become the emotions around her. In that section specifically, I was pulling from my concert dance side and how I speak through movement in modern dance.”
That blend of dance languages, that emphasis on ambitious choreography, that translation of culture is all of Camille A. Brown. And it’s also New York.
Hell's Kitchen is scheduled to come to the the Broward Center starting March 10, 2026. For more in-depth interviews, up-to-date news and show reviews on Broadway, visit BroadwayNews.com.
