Columbus Ohio Theatre, The Sound of Music, February 2026
OHIO THEATRE COLUMBUS, OHIO
Dear Broadway Guests,
Before it was a film, The Sound of Music was a rousing success on Broadway, winning Best Musical and four other Tony Awards in 1959. (Side note: The Sound of Music had its first public onstage performance at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut, which CAPA also operates!)
It was the final collaboration between composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II, the team who created a string of hit Broadway shows including Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, and The King and I. The creative duo is widely credited for ushering in a golden age of musical theatre in the 50s and 60s—Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Jerry Herman—and we Broadway fans are the better for it.
That said, there’s a reasonable chance that the show you’re here to see tonight was your introduction to musical theatre, and that you first saw it in your living room and not on a stage.
When ABC first aired the movie The Sound of Music on TV in February of 1976, it had been 10 years since the film won Best Picture at the 1966 Academy Awards. But it was a huge hit, and TV audiences watched— almost half of the TVs in the U.S. were tuned to the broadcast.
If you’re here with us tonight because you grew up watching the film with your family every year, I suspect you’re not alone.
Thanks, as always, for coming.

DIRECTOR JACK O’BRIEN ON BRINGING THE SOUND OF MUSIC BACK TO ITS ROOTS
BY CQ QUINTANA
Most are familiar with the beloved musical classic, The Sound of Music, which tells the story of Maria, a bold young woman who leaves the convent to serve as governess to a large family on the eve of Anschluss, the Nazi occupation of Austria. Ultimately, Maria falls in love with the children and their widowed father, Captain von Trapp, and together the family forges a plan to flee Austria. Some of the show’s best-known songs include “Edelweiss,” “Do-Re-Mi” and “My Favorite Things,” to name a few. Yet when invited to take the helm as director of the 2015 national tour company of The Sound of Music—now back on stage in an invigorated 2025 production—legendary, Tony-winning director Jack O’Brien nearly said no. O’Brien recalls, “When I opened the script and read, ‘Austria 1936,’ I thought to myself, I’ve never seen anything to do with The Sound of Music that looked like the 1930s.” Every version he’d seen of the 1959 musical had been steeped in the ‘60s, including the film. “I realized that no one had ever done the piece the way it was written. The great privilege of staging [the current production is] people go in expecting to see the movie, and what they see is what the writers originally intended.” As O’Brien describes his work on the show, “I got to awaken sleeping beauty, and now, people are flipping over it!”

The Sound of Music, with its unforgettable score, is the only Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that Oscar Hammerstein II didn’t write the book for—instead it was co-written by renowned Broadway librettists Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. “I’ve been auditioning people to do this show for the last 10 years, and I’m telling you, I never tire of hearing that script,” says O’Brien. In a career spanning 60 impressive years including an array of Broadway and regional triumphs, O’Brien attests “working on this production has been one of the greatest pleasures of my entire life.” He describes “revelation after revelation [during the 2015 production process], and we opened, and it did extremely well, but all of us wanted to come back and finish the work, and that’s what we’ve done.”
As a University of Michigan student in 1960, O’Brien sat in the audience of the original production of The Sound of Music at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre—little did he know the impact the musical would later have on his life. He recalls “Mary Martin in a little tree, trucked downstage. There was no amplification, and you heard this astonishing voice.” O’Brien felt Martin was, of course, a great star, but at 44 years old, she wasn’t quite suited for the role. Having an age-appropriate Maria “helps audiences understand that there’s real life involved here.” People often forget that The Sound of Music is inspired by the true story of orphan-turned-matriarch Maria von Trapp and her memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. (On opening night of the current iteration of the show in Washington, D.C., Cayleigh Capaldi, who now plays the role of Maria, gifted O’Brien a copy of the original book.) Beyond consideration of the leading lady’s age, when O’Brien and his team started auditioning for the part of Maria, he said, “Don’t bring me any little Mary Martins. I want a girl jock. I want a hockey player. I want the greatest babysitter in the world.” As O’Brien recounts, “The first lyric you hear [in the musical] is ‘How Do You Solve a Problem like Maria?’ because clearly she’s not cut out to be a nun.”
O’Brien is delighted with the response both from theatregoers and insiders. “It’s so much fun to see audiences discovering something they think they understand from a completely different vantage point,” says O’Brien, who has developed a friendship with librettist Crouse’s children, Lindsay and Timothy. The director recalls the librettist’s son telling him: “This is what they’ve waited all their lives for. Even though everybody loves the movie, if they really want to see the mother lode, they’ve got to see the show!”

BROADWAY IN THE CLASSROOM
Among the audience members for this week’s run of The Sound of Music here at the Ohio Theatre are participants in CAPA’s Broadway in the Classroom program.
Broadway in the Classroom introduces students from Title 1 schools to musical theatre during an engaging, curriculum-based program.
The goal of Broadway in the Classroom is to use the power of Broadway to serve as a tool to enhance curriculum and introduce Broadway to the next generation.
CAPA Education & Engagement staff works closely with schools to implement an in-depth curriculum that explores the educational components of a Broadway show. The students also attend the show when it comes to Columbus, providing them with a unique and memorable theatre experience.
Participating schools engage in six weeks of show-related curriculum developed by their teacher and CAPA and aligned with Ohio Department of Education standards. The six-week unit culminates with a final project (group or individual) that students use to synthesize what they have learned.
“This program is an opportunity for educators to use Broadway as a curriculum tool in the classroom. It gives students the chance to experience musical theatre, an art form they may not be familiar with, while also providing them with a field trip experience that brings the classroom learning to life,” CAPA Senior Director of Education & Engagement Amy Handra said.
Broadway in the Classroom - Columbus International High School
This school year, the Broadway in the Classroom program is working with students from Columbus Preparatory Academy, Westland High School, and World Language Middle School.
CAPA’s role is to serve as a resource to the educator over the six-week unit, visiting the school twice to observe a lesson. CAPA also provides access to supplemental materials and the opportunity to have a local teaching artist visit their classroom during the engagement to enhance curriculum.
On March 20, students will attend a performance of The Outsiders at the Ohio Theatre, along with a pre-show reception and a post-show talkback with cast members.
Students at Columbus International High School benefitted from the program in 2024-25, and their teacher said it made a big impression.
“Through our participation in the Broadway in the Classroom program, our students learned about musicals and stretched their imaginations through the improv games the teaching artist shared in their acting workshops. They loved exploring the modernization of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet and had fun seeing how different things could have been if the lovers had lived. Many of our students have never attended a musical before and your generosity made that possible,” Johnna Cornette-Parker, ESL language arts teacher at Columbus International, wrote to CAPA staff and Broadway in Columbus season subscribers.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors and sponsors, the program covers all costs, including tickets and transportation.
In fact, all of CAPA’s Education and Engagement programs are 100% funded by donations.
CAPA’s other Education and Engagement programs include Passport to Learning Student Matinee Series, Día de los Niños (Day of the Children), Schooled on Poetry, ARISE, CAPA Community Creates, and of course, the CAPA Marquee Awards, a year-long, educational program that offers selected high schools the opportunity to participate in professional theatre education activities throughout the school year including master classes with Broadway touring artists and skills-based workshops with local and regional artists, which culminate with a red-carpet ceremony and student showcase at the Ohio Theatre in May.

RICHARD RODGERS and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II (Music and Lyrics). After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902–1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/ lyricist, 1895–1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in the American musical theatre. Prior to his work with Hammerstein, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on a series of musical comedies that epitomized the wit and sophistication of Broadway in its heyday. Among their greatest successes were Pal Joey, On Your Toes, and Babes In Arms. Throughout the same era, Hammerstein brought new life to the operetta, culminating in the masterpiece Show Boat (music by Jerome Kern). Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers’s musical comedy style with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta. Oklahoma! was followed by Carousel, State Fair (film 1945, 1962; Broadway 1996), Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Cinderella (television 1957, 1965, 1997; Broadway 2013), Flower Drum Song, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tonys, Oscars, GRAMMYs, Emmys, Pulitzers, and Olivier Awards.
HOWARD LINDSAY and RUSSEL
CROUSE (Book). Lindsay and Crouse had one of the longest and most storied playwriting collaborations in theatrical history, lasting 32 years. Howard Lindsay was born in 1889 and died in 1968. He became an actor at 19 and went on to become a successful Broadway playwright and director. Russel Crouse was born in 1893 and died in 1966. After serving in the Navy, he worked on New York newspapers, gaining his first renown through a signed column in the Post. In 1932 he became head of the publicity department for the Theatre Guild and in 1933 wrote his first Broadway show, collaborating with Corey Ford on the musical comedy Hold Your Horses. From 1934 on Crouse wrote only with Lindsay. Their hits include The Sound of Music (with a score by Rodgers & Hammerstein); Anything Goes and Red, Hot, and Blue (with scores by Cole Porter); Call Me Madam (score by Irving Berlin); the long-running play Life With Father (which originally starred Lindsay); the Pulitzer Prize-winning State of the Union; and The Great Sebastians, written for Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, the pre-eminent acting team of the day. Their producing credits included The Hasty Heart, Detective Story, and Arsenic and Old Lace. JACK O’BRIEN (Director) recently received a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award, and directed The Roommate on Broadway with Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone followed by a production of Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts (Lincoln Center Theatre) and the musical Shucked (The Regents Park, London). He directed his first Broadway production in 1969 and has collected three Tonys since then (Henry IV, Hairspray and The Coast of Utopia). He’s done operas (Il Trittico, Great Soctt, Porgy and Bess, etc.) musicals (The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Carousel, etc.), television (“American Playhouse,” “Great Performances,” etc.), ran the Old Globe Theatre for 25 years, written two books published by Farrar Straus & Giroux (Jack Be Nimble and Jack in the Box), and two night club performances at 54 Below.
