Dear Broadway Fan,
I imagine there are many of you in our audience tonight for whom this isn’t the first time you’ve seen the spectacular, legendary Les Misérables. (And if this is your first Les Mis, welcome! You’re about to find out why many of the people seated around you seem to know what’s coming in every song and yet keep returning time and time again.)
In the same way, there may be some in our audience tonight who are with us in the Ohio Theatre for the first time, as hard as that might be to imagine for our subscribers and other long-time Broadway and CAPA supporters.
The CAPA staff, board, volunteers, and everyone who makes up the CAPA family are proud of our stewardship of beautiful, historic spaces. And right now we’re especially excited as we approach the 100th anniversaries of the Palace Theatre (2026), Ohio Theatre (2028) and Lincoln Theatre (2028). Look for more on our yearlong celebration plans soon at capa.com and by following our social media channels.
This year also finds us in new and exciting spaces.
You have hopefully heard about and have been following our plans to renovate the former Central Presbyterian Church on Third Street Downtown into a Music Hall. You can find out more at www.capa.com/support-music-hall.
And we’re extremely excited about the opportunity to partner with the City of Columbus to assume operation of the Idea Foundry. The Franklinton neighborhood has long been known as an arts hub, and we look forward to supporting that community vision as we work side-by-side with local artists and creatives.
While neither of these efforts is likely to directly impact your experience at a Broadway in Columbus show, we believe they increase the cultural vibrancy of Columbus and deepen the already robust role of CAPA as we enrich lives by cultivating and nurturing the arts, and help keep Columbus a renowned artistic destination for living, breathing art.
Thanks, as always, for coming.

COMPLETELY CHEEKY, SOMEWHAT ACCURATE TIMELINE OF LES MISÉRABLES
BY BROADWAY.COM STAFF
Les Misérables is wowing audiences all over the place! But before you join the crusade, it’s time for a little history lesson. Wait, don’t leave! Even if you failed history class, you can get an A+ in Les Miz trivia by reading this fun (and mostly historically accurate) timeline of the story, from the classic Victor Hugo novel to the celebrated musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg.
1789
The French Revolution begins. This happens way before any of the stuff in Les Miz takes place, so if you overhear an old lady sitting in front of you in the theatre telling her husband the musical is about “the French Revolution,” go ahead and challenge her to a duel.
1802
Les Misérables author Victor Hugo was born in Besancon, France. His father is a high-ranking officer in Napoleon’s army, while his mother is supposedly sleeping with General Victor Lahorie—he is executed for plotting against Napoleon by the time little Victor turns 10.
1815
The Bourbon Restoration begins, and all those stuffy royals who were overthrown during the French Revolution return to power. This is also when all of the (fictional) stuff in Les Miz starts happening: Jean Valjean is released on parole, Cosette and Éponine are born, Fantine’s lover leaves (before autumn comes and all of those nighttime thunder tigers start showing up), etc.
1821
Napoleon Bonaparte dies, and those pesky Bourbons remain in power. This is right around the time Jean Valjean becomes the (fake) mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer, foiling Javert even though he looks practically the same, just with longer hair and a beard.
1824
Louis XVIII dies and is replaced by his brother, Charles X, who changes France’s political structure from a constitutional monarchy to a less democratic model. Boooo! In Les Miz, Jean Valjean raises Cosette as his own daughter, and she presumably does a lot of darning socks, needlepoint and other indoor activities.

1832
General Lamarque is dead! Revolutionaries build makeshift barricades all over the city and the June Rebellion begins—but things get crazy, French soldiers shoot a lot of people, and the whole thing lasts less than 24 hours. Meanwhile, Victor Hugo finds himself stuck in an alley for hours, hiding from the crossfire. In the book and musical, this is the battle that kills Enjolras, Éponine and Gavroche (and well, uh, pretty much everyone)
1833
Well, the uprising fails and until 1848, when another revolution shakes things up, life is just as miserables as it was before. But in Les Miz, Cosette and Marius get married, hooray! Also, Jean Valjean dies. Noo! (In the book, Valjean passes away six months after the wedding, but he dies in the musical while Cosette is still wearing her wedding dress. You know, for drama.)
1862
Les Misérables is published. It’s 85 billion pages. (OK, fine, it’s 1,488 pages, same thing.) A mob of political bookworms storm the stores in Paris, and all 7,000 copies sell out in 24 hours. Hugo, meanwhile, is living in exile in Belgium ever since having a bit of a tiff with Napoleon III (he openly called the ruler a traitor to France).
1909
The first Les Misérables film adaptation is released, starring Maurice Costello as Jean Valjean and William V. Ranous as Javert. It paves the way for 14 subsequent movies and TV shows based on the powerful story.
1980
Composer Claude-Michel Schonberg and lyricists Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel create a French concept album based on Victor Hugo’s celebrated novel. Oui, it’s in French. The first stage adaptation is presented at the Palais des Sports, a Paris sports arena, where it runs for three months. A few years later, director Peter Farago gives Cameron Mackintosh the album and asks him if he would produce an English version.
1985
Les Misérables opens at the Barbican Centre in London, starring Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean, Roger Allam as Javert, Patti LuPone as Fantine, Michael Ball as Marius, Rebecca Caine as Cosette and Frances Ruffelle as Éponine. The reviews are comme ci, comme ça, but don’t worry—fans love it and it transfers to the West End’s Palace Theatre.
1987
Les Misérables opens at the Broadway Theatre, with Colm Wilkinson reprising the role of Jean Valjean. Frank Rich of The New York Times writes, “If anyone doubts that the contemporary musical theatre can flex its atrophied muscles and yank an audience right out of its seats, he need look no further than the Act I finale of Les Misérables.” C’est vrai! The production nabs nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, before transferring to the Imperial Theatre in 1990.
2006
A new production of the now-universally beloved musical opens at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre, only three years after the original New York production closed. Audiences prove that they’re not sick of hearing the people sing. What started as a six-month engagement turns into a two-year Broadway run.
2012
Universal Pictures releases Les Misérables on the big screen, starring Tony winner Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Oscar winner Russell Crowe as ruthless inspector Javert, Anne Hathaway as desperate mother Fantine, future Tony winner Aaron Tveit as Enjolras, future Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne as Marius and future Emmy winner Amanda Seyfried as Cosette. Helmed by Tom Hooper, the actors sing live on set, Hathaway cuts her hair for real (and wins an Oscar for her performance—not her haircut).
2014
Les Misérables returns to the Imperial Theatre. The new, restaged version of the beloved musical directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell features Ramin Karimloo as Jean Valjean (who reprised the role after starring in the Toronto production), Will Swenson as Javert, Caissie Levy as Fantine, Tony winner Nikki M. James as Éponine, Andy Mientus as Marius and Samantha Hill as Cosette.
2022
The current national tour Les Misérables launches in Cleveland, Ohio and is still running strong. Audiences are ready to storm the barricades again!

FROM FIRST CURTAIN TO FINAL BOW: HONORING CHUCK HAMMERLE AND WELCOMING JULIA KELLEY
STORY BY
Jim Fischer
After 20 years as Director of Operations here at the Ohio Theatre, serving thousands of guests at innumerable shows, Chuck Hammerle is retiring this month. If you see Chuck in the building tonight, wish him well and thank him for his part in making your experiences in the Ohio the best they can be all these years.
Moving forward, Julia Kelley will assume the role of Director of Operations. We trust that the staff here, with her leadership, will continue to offer the same high quality of service and experience you’ve come to expect.
We wanted to give both Chuck and Julia the opportunity to talk about themselves and their work here at CAPA, and the importance of serving you, our guests.
Tell a little bit about yourself.
Chuck: I was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and graduated from Bethel Park High School. I joined the Marine Corp Reserves and enjoyed 17 years of it. I moved to Columbus in 1998. When an opportunity opened at CAPA in 2005, I jumped at the chance. I started at the Southern Theatre and after a very short run there, I moved to the Ohio Theatre and have loved every minute.
Julia: Born and raised in Columbus, I attended Otterbein University for Design/ Tech for Theatre. I had the absolute joy of working with companies like The Contemporary Theatre of Ohio (House Manager), BalletMet (at the Davidson Theatre), and Columbus Symphony (Administrative Office). I started with CAPA in 2023 as the Director of Operations of the Southern and Riffe Center Theatres. I am honored to be taking over for Chuck at the Ohio Theatre after his 20 years with CAPA!
Chuck Hammerle and Julia Kelley. Photo by Lydia Miller
What are some of the things you’ve liked or appreciated most about working at CAPA?
Chuck: What I like most about being here at the Ohio Theatre is seeing the people’s faces when it’s their first time walking in. The little ones asking… “who lives here?” and I say, “I do!”
Julia: The first show I remember seeing as a child was BalletMet’s The Nutcracker here at the Ohio Theatre; so, when my first professional show was BalletMet’s Director’s Choice at the Davidson Theatre, it was very special to me! As the Director of Operations at the Davidson and Southern, I really enjoyed working with groups such as Opera Columbus, ProMusica, Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus, Jazz Arts Group, and the Columbus Symphony. I look forward to continuing work with many of these groups at the Ohio Theatre!
What are some important ways that our front of house staff can serve our guests?
Chuck: Our front of house staff is there to answer any questions patrons may have, and if they can’t answer them, they send them to me, and I’ll find the answer if I can. I have learned a lot from others who were here before me. It has taught me to be patient and think about how you would act if it were your first time at the theatre and your seat was broken or there was a patron shaking their cup of ice during your favorite scene.
Julia: We are always happy to offer one of our many accessible devices at all of CAPA’s venues. If you or a member of your party might need an Assisted Listening Device, a courtesy wheelchair, booster seat, headphones, KultureCity bags, help finding our nursing room, or assistance connecting to our Listen, please let us know. It’s great to see these items make the show more enjoyable, especially for our next generation of theatre, ballet, and music lovers!
Are there things you wish our guests knew that they could talk to our staff about that maybe they don’t realize or think about?
Chuck: Patrons need to know that if at any time there is an issue with their seat, another patron, temperature, or even sound with the performance, they should let someone know as soon as possible. This way, we can do our best to make their experience the best it can be. Many times, we don’t know of an issue until the next day when they send an email or even call. It’s best to take care of it right away.
Julia: As we always tell our volunteers and house managers, “if you see something, say something!”, or in other words, let us know how we can help you while you’re in the theatre. If you’re having an issue inside the theatre, or the paper towels in the restroom are out, please let us know so we can make your experience at CAPA venues the best possible. We are also simply happy to provide directions to get you to your seat with the fewest steps—and the fastest route to the coffee cart in our pavilion area!
