OHIO THEATRE COLUMBUS, OHIO

Dear Broadway Enthusiasts,

Once again, it’s my pleasure to welcome you to a great night of Broadway here at the Ohio Theatre.

If this is your first time seeing Hadestown, prepare to have some feelings. The music and choreography work together seamlessly to tell the story in a way that is better described as ‘felt’ than ‘watched’.

Here at CAPA, this show brings back some extra-special feelings. Hadestown was the first Broadway show we presented in Columbus following the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s hard to describe the collective mood on that Tuesday evening in November 2021 as we welcomed you back to the Ohio Theatre for the first time in 18 months. Excitement. Anticipation. Still a hint of apprehension. But mostly, joy. And that joy would be felt through all of the performances that took place that week.

Joy, education, experience, and memories - it’s what we do here at CAPA.

Your excitement in coming back to live theatre was a reaffirmation of how important shared experience and the bringing together of a diverse group of people is to our community. Presenting the performing arts to the community in many forms and genres is a privilege that we don’t take lightly, even today, more than four years later after re-opening.

We’re proud to present live performing arts in our theatres, and we’re so appreciative of your eagerness to share these moments with us. What we do is not possible without all of you.

From me and everyone at CAPA, thanks, as always, for being a part of the arts community in Columbus.

Thanks, as always, for coming.

THE MYTHS BEHIND THE MUSIC

OUTSIDE OF HADESTOWN, WHO ARE ORPHEUS AND EURYDICE, HADES AND PERSEPHONE?

“It’s an old song … an old tale from way back when,” sings the character of Hermes in opening Hadestown. At its core, the musical is based on two ancient Greek myths: “Orpheus and Eurydice” and “Hades and Persephone.” Mythologies such as these, which feature the stories of gods, heroes and rituals of ancient Greece, have been passed down for thousands of years — so there is no one definitive text. But while some details vary, the heart of these stories and their lessons have remained unchanged. The foundation of these myths inspire the plot and characters of Hadestown.

In the ancient Greek tradition, Orpheus was a musician, but not just any. He was known as the only mortal whose playing rivaled that of the god of music, Apollo. Some say Orpheus was the son of the Muses and a Thracian prince — inheriting the gift of song from his mother and having had it nurtured by Thracians, the most musical people of Greece. Others simply note his otherworldly musical ability without explanation. But all versions agree that no one and nothing could resist Orpheus’ music. One day, while playing beneath a tree, Orpheus meets Eurydice, the nymph (or spirit) of this tree. The two fall in love and are married. But soon after their joyful matrimony, Eurydice wanders in the fields and is bitten by a poisonous viper. Eurydice dies and is taken to the

underworld. (Hadestown takes liberties here. In the musical, Hades persuades Eurydice in the tune “Hey, Little Songbird” to forgo her poverty-stricken situation for Hades’ well-supplied underworld — a more symbolic snakebite.)

Overwhelmed by his grief, Orpheus is determined to fetch Eurydice from the land of the dead and bring her back to Earth. Hermes, the messenger deity, leads Orpheus to the River Styx — the entrance of the underworld. (In Hadestown Hermes sings of a railroad rather than a river, but it’s always a long, winding path.) But Charon, the ferryman of the riverboat that leads souls to the underworld, refuses to transport a living human. Yet when Orpheus plays his lyre, Charon can’t resist. Charon obliges and Orpheus begins his journey to rescue Eurydice. Orpheus’ music continues to charm other obstacles in the underworld (like Cerberus, the three-headed guard dog). Orpheus finally reaches Hades, ruler of the underworld.

Orpheus’ music bends the will of Hades, who agrees that Orpheus may lead his love back to the mortal world — under one condition. Orpheus must travel ahead of Eurydice and may not look back at her until they have both left the underworld. But, as Hadestown creator Anaïs Mitchell writes in her lyrics, the story is “a sad song.” Orpheus glances over his shoulder too soon. He loses Eurydice forever.

But there is another myth folded into the main story of the fated musician and nymph: that of Hades and Persephone. The beautiful god Persephone was the daughter of Zeus, ruler of the heavens, and Demeter, god of agriculture and fertility. While picking flowers in a meadow, Persephone catches Hades’ eye. The god of the underworld cracks open the earth and swallows Persephone, abducting her to be his bride. Some versions of the narrative say Zeus had given Hades permission to take and wed Persephone. But at the kidnapping of her daughter, Demeter’s grief consumes her and she fails to care for the earth. Fields became barren and a famine spread throughout the land. Worried about the fate of the earth, Zeus sends Hermes to the underworld to bargain with Hades for Persephone’s return. But as Hermes arrives, Hades tricks Persephone into eating pomegranate seeds. According to Greek mythology, anyone who eats food in the land of the dead cannot return to the land of the living. Persephone has been trapped. But because of Demeter’s wrath and Hades’ trickery, the gods negotiate. They decide Persephone will spend six months of the year with her mother on earth and six months of the year in the underworld with her husband, Hades. The myth of Hades and Persephone offers an explanation to the seasons — a bleak winter while Persephone lives down below and a prosperous spring when she returns to her mother. (In Hadestown, the song “Livin’ It Up on Top” marks the start of Persephone’s spring on earth.)

Mitchell’s take on these two stories have perpetuated the oral-poetic tradition of mythology itself. Hadestown adds a modern American folkjazz sensibility to the ancient Greek tradition at its source.

SARA GRUEN, AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING WATER FOR ELEPHANTS NOVEL, ON THE STORY’S ENDURING POWER

The idea for Water for Elephants seized Sara Gruen’s imagination before she even realized she was looking for a new story.

She was midway through writing a different book when, on February 7, 2003, she opened the Chicago Tribune and came across a feature on Edward J. Kelty, a photographer who had traveled with America’s most storied circuses in the 1920s and ’30s. His black-and-white images captured clowns, acrobats, bearded ladies, giants and more. They offered a surreal glimpse into circus life at its peak. Gruen was taken with the subject matter.

Kelty had used a massive banquet camera, one that could photograph entire troupes in a single frame. His prints were wide and deep, packed with texture. You could look at them for a long time and still not see everything. Gruen did just that. She was drawn to the detail, the stillness and the sense of mystery in each photo.

“The pictures could show all of the Ringling people—the lineup—at once,” she recalls in an interview with Broadway.com Managing Editor Beth Stevens for The Broadway Show with Tamsen Fadal. “You could go and look and find the wrinkles in the stockings, the feather fronds, the detail. I was just staring at the pictures,” she says, still sounding amazed. “I stabbed it and I said, ‘This is what I’m doing next.’”

And she did. Gruen walked away from the novel she had been working on and threw herself into a different world entirely. She began researching circus history and chasing down every thread of inspiration she could find. The result was Water for Elephants, published in 2006. The novel follows Jacob Jankowski, a veterinary student whose life is upended by tragedy just before he finishes school. Alone and without direction, he winds up on a circus train and joins the Benzini Bros. Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

The story that unfolds is filled with hardship and grit but also moments of beauty and tenderness. It’s a look at life on the margins during the Great Depression, told through the eyes of someone trying to find a place to belong.

Photo

“The message that it carries is about loving and caring for each other,” Gruen says.

That message came straight from her own life. Gruen has always cared deeply about animals, and her passion for their well-being runs throughout the book. One of its most poignant relationships is between Jacob and an elephant named Rosie. She’s at the center of how the novel examines the challenge of choosing compassion, especially when it doesn’t come easily.

Writing the book was an intense process. Gruen spent months gathering details that would help her get the world right. She wasn’t interested in imagining the circus from a distance. She wanted to step into it fully. That meant understanding the smells of the train cars, the routines of life after the show and the weight of constant movement while trying to feel at home.

As her research continued, Gruen became increasingly drawn to the inner workings of circus life. Behind the performances and animals were people who had either chosen that path or found themselves with nowhere else to go. They learned to survive together and rely on one another. By most definitions, they were outsiders, but within the circus they created something that felt like family.

“It’s about chosen family and looking after each other,” she says.

That idea has helped the story live on in different forms. The novel became a bestseller, then a major motion picture and now a stage musical. Gruen never imagined it would go this far, but she understands why it keeps finding new audiences. There’s something timeless in the story’s emotional center.

Bringing the story to the stage came with a different kind of challenge. The adaptation includes original music and circus-inspired movement, but what mattered most was keeping the heart of the story intact. That meant capturing the atmosphere and emotion that made the book resonate in the first place. The sense of closeness. The quiet relationships. The feeling of struggle and beauty existing side by side.

Seeing it all come together has been a powerful experience for Gruen. “These people are geniuses,” she says of the creative team. “It just comes out with all the important bits intact.”

Adapting a story always involves making choices. Not everything from the original will make it into the new version, and the creative team brings their own vision to the process. Still, Gruen feels the stage production has captured what matters most. It stays true to the book without trying to replicate it word for word.

“It feels new to me,” she says. “And yet, it retains all of the good things that I wanted it to have. I think that’s a pretty magical combination.”

The show echoes the novel in a quieter way. Like the Benzini Bros. circus, the production travels from place to place, setting up, performing, then moving on. Along the way, the cast and crew become their own kind of family, creating something temporary that still manages to leave a mark.

To Gruen, that feels like more than a coincidence. It’s part of why the story still resonates. The golden age of the American circus may be gone, but the themes at the heart of Water for Elephants remain. People still want connection. They want to be seen, to feel safe, to find comfort in uncertain moments.

That’s what has kept the story alive. On the surface, it’s set under the big top. At its core, it’s about people trying to look out for one another. Gruen believes that’s what continues to draw readers in, and now audiences too.

And it all began with a photograph. Or more than one. Gruen can still see the Kelty images that stopped her cold. There was something in the faces. Something quiet and impossible to shake.

“Those pictures just wouldn’t let go,” she says. And clearly, neither has the story.
