Cincinnati Aronoff Center, The Wiz, March 2026

Page 1

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Cincinnati Arts Association and First Financial Bank Broadway in Cincinnati, presented by TriHealth, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Aronoff Center for another memorable 25/26 season show.

In 1975, The Wiz burst onto the Broadway stage, won seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, and became a touchstone for innovation and representation in musical theater. Along with its vibrant score that infused R&B, Soul, and Gospel, The Wiz delivers dazzling choreography, stunning costumes, and a powerhouse cast.

The Wiz radiates joy, courage, and the transformative power of finding and trusting your own path. At its heart is the idea of “home”: the people, places, and moments that ground us, shape us, and ultimately lead us to who we are meant to be. As you journey with Dorothy down the Yellow Brick Road, we hope you feel that same spirit of belonging here with us. For over thirty years, the Aronoff Center has been a place where our community comes together to celebrate creativity, connection, and the shared experiences that make Cincinnati feel like home.

Next up on the Broadway in Cincinnati season is the legendary musical Chicago. Currently the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, this dazzling show is filled with unforgettable music, spectacular Bob Fosse choreography, and a story that remains as bold and relevant as ever. We hope you’ll join us again for this iconic production and for many more moments of inspiration throughout the year.

Thank you for your support and for spending your time with us today. If we can assist you in any way, please reach out to one of our ushers or team members. We hope The Wiz will lift your spirits, spark your imagination, and remind you that there is truly…no place like home.

Enjoy the show!

DIRECTOR SCHELE WILLIAMS IS EXCITED TO OFFER THE WIZ TO A NEW GENERATION

STORY BY Broadway.com Staff

Schele Williams was approximately six years old when she first attended a production of The Wiz. She remembers the experience as the first time she saw herself represented onstage. “The Wiz taught me so much about my Blackness at a young age, when I saw it in Dayton, Ohio,” Williams shared. “It’s the first time I saw me onstage, and that was exciting.”

Williams — a Broadway performer-turned-director — has been tapped to share that excitement with a new generation of audience members as she helms the latest revival of The Wiz, which is currently on tour.

Williams chatted with Broadway.com Editor-in-Chief Paul Wontorek about the history of The Wiz and the motivation behind her approach for the revival. She recalled that when the musical debuted on Broadway in 1975, “There wasn’t a lot of confidence that it was going to be lasting.” But the launch of one television commercial changed everything.

“It took two seconds for people to go, ‘What was that?’” Williams said. She said the ad made an important distinction about the musical. “It’s a show where Black people were like, ‘Oh this is us,’” Williams shared. “Not just Black people on stage, but real authentic representation.”

Part of that authenticity came directly from star Stephanie Mills, who originated the role of Dorothy. As Williams said, Mills’ voice didn’t sound like it was trained at a conservatory: “She sounded like she came out of church.” That sound, combined with Geoffrey Holder’s costume design and direction, contributed to the cultural credibility that made audiences buy tickets.

The original production of The Wiz ran for more than four years (1,672 performances). Williams now wishes to bring a Wiz that is just as inspiring for a new generation of theatergoers. The seed for Williams’ vision begins with her children. She thought of her 12- and 13-year-old daughters and asked herself: “What are they looking to see when they see Dorothy?

“When I read the script, what I saw was a girl who was seeking belonging — who felt like she didn’t fit in where she was,” Williams said. Throughout the course of the musical, Dorothy “finds her tribe,” amid the quirks and bravery of the characters she encounters. The group learns to problem-solve, and Dorothy gains faith in herself.

“When I saw that in the story, I was like, ‘Oh, that’s a gift to my daughters,’” Williams said. “I feel so honored more than anything. I feel like I’m the luckiest person in the world. I cannot wait to share this beautiful story again with people who love it and to introduce it to new generations.”

BROADWAY IN CINCINNATI HOSTS KITCHEN UTENSIL COLLECTION FOR NEW LIFE FURNITURE BANK

"When I think of home, I think of a place where there's love overflowing." - The Wiz, "Home"

There’s no place like home—and Broadway in Cincinnati is inviting audiences to join us in helping our neighbors reach it. During The Wiz, we’re collecting new or gently used kitchen utensils to support New Life Furniture Bank.

New Life Furniture Bank provides essential home furnishings to families and individuals rebuilding their lives after homelessness, crisis, or extreme hardship. As the region’s only furniture bank, NLFB collects gently used items from the community and delivers them directly into people’s homes, bringing comfort, stability, and hope to thousands each year.

A furnished home is more than a place to set your things. It’s where children sleep through the night in their own beds, where parents gather around a table to share a meal, and where stability begins to take root. These simple essentials give families the foundation they need to move forward.

Because of generous neighbors, volunteers, and partners, in 2024 New Life Furniture Bank:

• Furnished 2,399 homes

• Served 5,811 people, nearly half of them children

• Delivered 33,799 pieces of furniture and essential household items

• Provided 2,035 beds, ensuring no one had to sleep on the floor

NLBF works closely with more than 95 social service agencies who refer families and individuals transitioning into housing. Together, we help ensure each household receives the support, furnishings, and stability they need to thrive. This mission is possible because our community shows up with generosity and heart:

• Furniture donors give items a meaningful second life.

• 2,733 volunteers sort, build, repair, and deliver with care.

• Financial supporters help fuel our trucks and sustain our services.

Behind every delivery is a story of dignity restored. One grandmother raising her granddaughter shared that furnishing her home on her own “would’ve taken at least two years.” Instead, she received everything she needed in one day— allowing her to focus on work, family, and healing.

These moments remind us that when a home is furnished with care, a family gains more than furniture. They gain peace, stability, and the confidence to move forward.

Would you like to support NLFB’s work? There is a place at the table for you! If you’d like to learn more, donate furniture, volunteer, or support our mission, visit NLFurniture.org. Your kindness helps transform empty rooms into homes filled with comfort, dignity, and hope.

The uplifting and the illuminating, performed daily.

Experience stirring performances on Florida’s Cultural Coast ® . And feel more at ease and yet more inspired in the same moment. Plan your getaway today.
