IN SUFFS, RELATIONSHIPS INVIGORATE A MUSICAL ABOUT A SOCIAL MOVEMENT
Tony Award-winning writer Shaina Taub, Tony-nominated director Leigh Silverman and Tony-winning producer Jill Furman break down how the new musical merges history and heart.
STORY BY Ruthie Fierberg
The musical Suffs gets its name from a real-life coalition of women — the suffragists — who fought for their right to vote in the United States during the early 20th century. But the show gets its substance from a smaller group of women — beloved friends — who relied on one another, gave each other voice and fought side by side for the right to exist as full people. Suffs certainly offers a history lesson about the women’s suffrage movement that was skipped over by too many classes, but at the root of the musical is a story of friendship. As the show’s Tony Award-nominated director Leigh Silverman noted, “[We] foreground relationships and let what happened in the history come out through those relationships.”
Suffs premiered at Off-Broadway’s Public Theater in March of 2022. But Silverman and Tony Award-winning composer-lyricist and book writer Shaina Taub could feel they’d leaned too far into the history. “We all just nerd out for this story that we never got to learn,” Silverman said. “But the truth is that we’re bigger nerds for musical theater, and we want to make a show that grabs you by the heart and makes you care and feel for these people — and then you get this amazing piece of history along with it.”
“[Shaina] wanted to get back to more of her original impulses of why she started to write the show,” Silverman continued. Taub had been motivated by these individual women and their bond. With the musical’s Broadway mounting and now the tour, Taub regrounded her writing in “the centrality of friendship to their lives.”
That reinvigorated core shines through in numbers like “Show Them Who You Are,” in which Alice emboldens her friend, Inez Milholland, to use her innate gumption to rally others to their cause and to keep pushing toward their shared goal.
“There’s this amazing book called Big Friendship about how we don’t honor and validate friendships as a primary relationship in the culture — but for so many people, that’s the case,” Taub said. “My best friends — they’re sisters to me. It feels [like] blood. It’s deep. It is significant, and they are lifelong bonds.”
Broadway presented the opportunity to dig into these primary relationships, which Taub said are not only friendships but mentor-protégé relationships. “[Those], for me, are the relationships that define my life, in certain ways,” Taub continued. “And I don’t feel like I often see them at the center of a story.”
“This group of girls is like you and your friends,” said producer Jill Furman. “You’re going to love these women, and you’re going to see yourself in them.”
The relationships between characters (who are also real-life historical figures) grabbed Taub when she first encountered the history of the suffs. She saw herself and her girlfriends in the young generation of Alice Paul, Lucy Burns, Inez Milholland, Doris Stevens and Ruza Wenclawska. Using Stevens’ memoir, Jailed for Freedom, in her research, Taub dissected and then reassembled her own version of the chemistry among these women.
But the intricacies of these relationships can only come forward if they derive from strong individuals. Taub crafted an entire cast of distinct suffs across multiple generations.
She expresses those different manifestations of friendship — as well as conflicting approaches to passing the amendment for a woman’s right to vote — through her score.
“Musicals are about two worlds, and the two worlds of Suffs are the old guard and the establishment of the movement, and the young radical,” Taub said. “So I was like, ‘What if the sound of the old guard is the sound of the time?’ Early Broadway, early Tin Pan Alley, early jazz, the birth of show tunes — which is a style I love to write in and what I wrote in for Old Hats.”
“If that’s the sound of Carrie [Chapman Catt], the old guard, [President] Wilson and anything that represents the status quo, then the sound of the young radicals could be the sound of the future they want to create,” Taub continued. “That was more just a visceral impulse. … That sounds like me.”
“She’s so passionate and funny and charismatic, and the combination of those things in her voice is irresistible,” said Silverman. “The songs are catchy, political, unique and full of personality.”
“She has characters who are fun and funny and weird,” Silverman said. “I feel like them, and I want to be like them.”
Taub already sees herself and her colleagues in the suffs — not only in their perseverance and daring, but in their artistry. Friendship was the kernel Taub wanted to expand from, but the inherent theatricality of the suffs, historically speaking, is what made the artist believe she could make their story a musical.
“What they pioneered so masterfully in the suffrage movement was the visual rhetoric of a social movement, the theatricality of a social movement: color, costume, choreography, singing in the street, unfurling banners in a hall like [Cooper Union], burning a President in effigy, standing at the gates of the White House — that’s theater,” Taub exclaimed. “They were theater artists, and they understood the importance of storytelling, messaging, in a visual medium and spectacle.”
Suffs is meta in that way. Its team of artists believes that this musical can use music, story and spectacle to communicate messages of hope, persistence and devotion — not only to a cause but to one another.
In fact, Suffs has been like a friend to its creators. “These songs have been a comfort when I felt alone; they have been a guide when I wasn’t sure what to do; they have been an inspiration to be a better person, to be a better citizen, to take one more step,” said music supervisor Andrea Grody. “These women and Shaina’s words and music for them have given me the power to be that better person, to be that better citizen, and I have been so eager for other people to have that. I want to give them this gift that she has given me — because we need it.”
