CONNOR RICHARDSON WRITES A COMEDIC PAGE IN THE NOTEBOOK

Growing up in Nashville, Connor Richardson, who plays Johnny in the national touring company of The Notebook, tried every sport you could imagine.

“I liked them and I had fun, but nothing really stuck,” he said. “I was doing a lot of different things at the same time, but eventually everything else faded away and theatre was the one thing that remained. I dove in headfirst and was doing multiple shows at the same time all through high school.”

That led him to apply to theatre programs for college, and he found his home at Coastal Carolina, which he called “one of the greatest things to ever happen to me.”

“It’s where I really learned what it means to be an actor,” Richardson said. “I was surrounded by so many amazingly creative and talented people, and it was just an incredible environment to be in for four years.”

After performing in a senior showcase and graduating in 2024, Richardson quickly signed with an agency in New York and one of the first things he auditioned for was The Notebook.

“I had gotten a self-tape request and about two weeks later, I got a call back and went into the room with one of our directors, the music director, the casting director, an assistant and a reader,” he said. “I did some scenes and songs and then left. About three weeks later, there was another callback where I did more scene work. Two weeks after that I got the call that I got the part of Johnny.”

HIS FAVORITE CHARACTER

While everyone knows The Notebook as being a heartwarming romance between Allie and Noah, the character of Johnny adds some levity to the story.

“For lack of a better word, he’s the comedic relief of the show,” Richardson said. “In a story that deals with such raw, real emotions and themes, it can be nice to go out there and be the source of comedy for the audience. When I saw the show on Broadway, he was my favorite character, and I’m really feeling how much that character is needed for this story. I’m just having a blast getting to do it.”

Richardson remembers seeing the 2004 hit movie the musical is based on in high school, and it had a deep meaning for him.

“At the time, my grandmother had just been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and our family was going through a lot of ups and downs,” he said. “I hadn’t really seen a portrayal of Alzheimer’s like that before. The story reminded me that there was a life before my grandma’s diagnosis—that she had lived this beautiful, vivid life. When you’re in the day-to-day of a diagnosis like that, it’s easy to forget that.”

ICONIC LOVE STORY

Upon seeing The Notebook on Broadway years later, he saw those themes come even more fully to life, and he’s thrilled that he gets to be a part of a show that touches so many people.

“There’s something about watching it live that really drives the emotions home in a way film sometimes can’t,” Richardson said. “There are moments on stage, especially with Beau [Gravitte], who plays older Noah, that feel like a dream every night. We’re such different characters, so you wouldn’t necessarily expect them to have the moments they do, but it’s really fun and the audience seems to love that dynamic.”

While fans of the movie or the original Nicolas Sparks book will get everything they want from the musical—the iconic love story and memorable moments between Allie and Noah—Richardson noted the stage version offers even more elements.

“My character Johnny wasn’t even in the movie or the book, they created him for the stage show,” he said. “Then we have three actors who play Allie and three who play Noah, so you really see their love and how they choose each other throughout their entire lives.”

BONDING ON THE LINKS

This is Richardson’s first tour and he’s enjoying going to different cities and bringing this touching story to so many. At each stop, he always tries to find places to do his two favorite activities—golf and climb.

“I’ll find a climbing gym, or if we’re somewhere like Denver or San Francisco, we’ll go outdoor climbing,” he said. “My friend Kyle [Mangold], who plays younger Noah, also loves climbing, so it’s a great way to get out, stay active and see the nature each city has to offer. There’s also a group of five or six of us who love golf, so we’ll find a course in every city—or multiple courses—and go play whenever we have time.”

That camaraderie is something that trickles down to the entire cast, even though there’s a sizeable age gap between the actors.

“I expected the cast to feel somewhat familial because we eat, sleep and breathe together every day for a year, but I didn’t expect it to feel as deep as it does,” Richardson said. “It feels like I’ve known these people my entire life now. Sometimes theatre casts can be incredibly dramatic, but this group isn’t like that at all. I thank my lucky stars every day that these are the people I get to share this experience with. I consider myself the luckiest guy in the world that I get to do this.”
