BLUMENTHAL ARTS

STORY BY Keith Loria
Although she attended Baldwin Wallace University for musical theatre and moved to New York afterwards to try and kickstart her career, R. Erin Craig realized quickly that performing was not the best road for her.
“At one point, I realized I didn’t feel I had what it takes to be a great performer,” she said. “I envy performers and marvel at them—how amazing it is that they can do what they do and be so vulnerable for all of us, but I didn’t think I had the drive or talent to be that.”
The problem was, she didn’t know anything else. There were no classes on how to be a general manager or producer, and she knew she wanted to continue being involved in the theatre world.
So, she landed a job working for producer Alecia Parker, and her group had just moved Chicago to Broadway from the Encores! series at the New York City Center in 1996, and Craig had the opportunity to learn quickly what it meant to make a show.
“I’m just a theatre kid and I love the live art and the collaboration of making a show and being able to bare witness to and support all the creative and technical and all the people who excel in their lane and putting it all together,” Craig said. “Something that gives the audience a special experience.”
Over the last few decades, Craig has built a storied career developing, mentoring and producing new artists and works through her work as a producer, production manager and general manager.
Her latest project is Austen’s Pride, though it took some convincing to get her involved.
“I was introduced to the show by a mentor of mine, Charlotte Wilcox, who is a longtime general manager, and she told me this was a beautiful show about Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice, and she wanted to introduce me to the writers,” Craig recounted.
Her initial response? “I don’t think so. I’m not a Jane Austen person. I never read Pride and Prejudice and never seen the movies, so I’m not the right person.”
But Wilcox persisted and eventually, Craig met Lindsay Warren Baker and Amanda Jacobs, who wrote the book, lyrics and music for the show. Since they were from her hometown of Rochester, NY, the trio felt an immediate bond and things started to feel like a good fit.
“I decided to work with them on the development stuff and help them along the way, but I still had not read the book or knew much about it,” she said. “We got through a run-through in the studio, so I figured I better go and see what’s going on, and about a quarter of a way through, when Elizabeth Bennet sings her what I call her ‘I-want song,’ I had tears of joy in my eyes. This was beautiful and not old-fashioned and dusty, and I had very incorrect predisposed understanding of who Jane Austen was. I knew I had been wrong.”
With Craig now on board as a producer, things were in motion to get Austen’s Pride on the fast-track to a stage in front of a live audience.
“It started with coming up with a plan for the show,” she said. “Prepandemic, we had done a developmental production at A.C.T. of
Connecticut, and we moved the show to Seattle and had a wonderful production there, but then everything stopped,” she said. “Coming out of the pandemic, I knew that this story has the potential to have a great, long life ahead of it. That means everything from a hopefully New York production to another tour to performances being done by schools and community groups and other professional theater companies all over the world.”
The show was relaunched with a Carnegie Hall concert in the summer of 2023 and then the conversations started for a tour. It started with performances at STAGES St. Louis and then Craig felt the Blumenthal would be a perfect home to start the tour.
“I talked with Tom Gabbard (CEO of Blumenthal Performing Arts) about doing a tour before coming into New York and felt his city was so primed for a show like this—the audiences are so brilliant and exciting,” Craig said. “Tom was on board and wanted to be the first, so Charlotte is really the start of our mini-tour and we are excited about what the audiences will say about it. It’s all about building the future life that comes after.”
