CAYLEIGH CAPALDI DETAILS A FEW OF HER ‘FAVORITE THINGS’ ABOUT TOURING

Cayleigh Capaldi, who plays Maria in the national touring company of The Sound of Music, was born with performing in her blood.

“I come from a show business family that goes back many generations on my father’s side,” she said. “Both my parents are also in show business. My grandparents were both performing in vaudeville in the U.S. and in Scotland and England, and before them, their parents were also vaudevillians and theatre owners in Scotland and Italy. So, it’s definitely a family business.”

Born in England, Capaldi grew up being a part of the action and seeing her parents on stage and watching them from the wings.

“I like to say that I grew up more in dressing rooms than I did in my own home,” she said. “But that was a joy for me. I’ve always loved being backstage.”

A SPECIAL PLACE IN HER HEART

Calling herself “an old soul,” Capaldi grasped the highs and lows of the industry from an early age.

“As actors, we have to face more rejection than we do expect,” she said. “So, I definitely learned those lessons by observation growing up and then also firsthand when I started performing.”

Her family moved to the U.S. when she was 7, and she started performing herself and training for a life in the theatre. She did summer programs at NYU, AMDA and AADA and graduated with degrees in music and East Asian studies from Columbia University.

Cayleigh Capaldi

It wasn’t long before the jobs started coming. Capaldi starred in Titanique both Off-Broadway and on the West End and also appeared in regional productions of Mary Poppins (Mary Poppins), Into the Woods (Cinderella) and Little Women (Jo March).

In December of 2024, she learned about the audition for Maria in The Sound of Music, a title that had a special place in her heart.

HER EARLIEST MEMORY

“My earliest memory is definitely the movie; we would usually watch it around the holidays,” she said. “It has such a warm, family-oriented feeling to it, at least the first half does. Then we address the hard realities of politics in 1938 Austria. But I fell in love with Julie Andrews at an early age. She’s one of my idols and my lifetime inspiration.”

So, when she was offered the role that Andrews made famous, she jumped at the chance.

“This is my first tour and I’m loving it so far,” Capaldi said. “I love exploring new places and I’m definitely learning from a lot of our other more experienced tour-wise cast members.”

One of her favorite things to do at each new stop is find local thrift stores.

“I really love thrifting and finding vintage items,” she said. “I also love learning about the history of each town, going to museums and learning about the people there. I try to squeeze as much in as I can while in each new stop.”

A VERY PRECIOUS MOMENT

Just as Maria bonds with the von Trapp children, Capaldi has enjoyed spending time with the younger actors in the show as well.

“Our kiddos are so extraordinarily talented,” she said, “They give me so much energy, and they give me so much to play with as an actor, too. I like

to think that my show as Maria doesn’t really start until I’m on stage with the kids because that’s when I feel like my feet are on the ground, and I’m officially sprinting.”

Her favorite moment in the show is singing “The Sound of Music” at the beginning of the musical.

“It’s the first time that we meet Maria on stage and it’s such a wonderful grounding moment because I love just exploring, trying to approach those lyrics with as fresh eyes as I can every night because they are so telling of her character and where she starts out in terms of her character arc,” Capaldi said. “It might sound a little silly, but it’s also one of the only moments in the show that I can actually look out into the audience and visualize the mountains that way. It’s my moment to sort of reach out to the audience and welcome them in and give them a little piece of connection so that’s a very precious moment to me.”

The Sound of Music also provides Capaldi with the chance to tour with her mom, who is a member of the company as its intimacy director.

“That has been such a cool experience actually working with her now in this capacity as actor and creative,” she said. “I’m lucky enough to still be very, very close with my family.”

RICHARD RODGERS and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II (Music and Lyrics). After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902–1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895–1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in the American musical theater. Prior to his work with Hammerstein, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on a series of musical comedies that epitomized the wit and sophistication of Broadway in its heyday. Among their greatest successes were Pal Joey, On Your Toes, and Babes In Arms. Throughout the same era, Hammerstein brought new life to the operetta, culminating in the masterpiece Show Boat (music by Jerome Kern). Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending

Rodgers’s musical comedy style with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta. Oklahoma! was followed by Carousel, State Fair (film 1945, 1962; Broadway 1996), Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Cinderella (television 1957, 1965, 1997; Broadway 2013), Flower Drum Song, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tonys, Oscars, GRAMMYs, Emmys, Pulitzers, and Olivier Awards.

HOWARD LINDSAY and RUSSEL

CROUSE (Book). Lindsay and Crouse had one of the longest and most storied playwriting collaborations in theatrical history, lasting 32 years. Howard Lindsay was born in 1889 and died in 1968. He became an actor at 19 and went on to become a successful Broadway playwright and director. Russel Crouse was born in 1893 and died in 1966. After serving in the Navy, he worked on New York newspapers, gaining his first renown through a signed column in the Post. In 1932 he became head of the publicity department for the Theatre Guild and in 1933 wrote his first Broadway show, collaborating with Corey Ford on the musical comedy Hold Your Horses. From 1934 on Crouse wrote only with Lindsay. Their hits include The Sound of Music (with a score by Rodgers & Hammerstein); Anything Goes and Red, Hot, and Blue (with scores by Cole Porter); Call Me Madam (score by Irving Berlin); the long-running play Life With Father (which originally starred Lindsay); the Pulitzer Prize-winning State of the Union; and The Great Sebastians, written for Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, the pre-eminent acting team of the day. Their producing credits included The Hasty Heart, Detective Story, and Arsenic and Old Lace

JACK O’BRIEN (Director) recently received a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award, and directed The Roommate on Broadway with Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone followed by a production of Ibsens Ghosts (Lincoln Center Theatre) and the musical Shucked (The Regents

Park, London). He directed his first Broadway production in 1969 and has collected three Tonys since then (Henry IV, Hairspray and The Coast of Utopia). He’s done operas (Il Trittico, Great Scott, Porgy and Bess, etc.) musicals (The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Carousel, etc.), television (“American Playhouse,” “Great Performances,” etc.), ran the Old Globe Theatre for 25 years, written two books published by Farrar Straus & Giroux (Jack Be Nimble and Jack in the Box), and two night club performances at 54 Below. If he’s slowing down, he hasn’t noticed it yet.

MATT LENZ (Associate Director). Credits include - Broadway: Hairspray, Catch Me If You Can, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Velocity of Autumn (Associate Director), Beauty and the Beast (Resident Director).
