JOYCE MEIMEI ZHENG BRINGS AN IMMIGRANT’S STORY TO LIFE IN SUFFS

When Joyce Meimei Zheng auditioned for the national tour of Suffs, she genuinely didn’t think she’d get the part. Not out of lack of confidence in her talents, but because she hadn’t performed in a musical in four years.

“Prior to this, the last full production of a musical I had done was in high school,” Zheng said. “In high school, I loved musicals and auditioned for musicals, but I ended up going to acting school. So, I kind of thought musical theatre wasn’t going to be a big part of my future, and here I am. I get to be a part of Suffs and get to play Ruza every day. It’s kind of crazy.” Zheng has now played Ruza Wenclawska, a Polish-American suffragist

who fought for women’s rights in workplaces and later became an actor and poet, more than 100 times.

She was drawn to the role for numerous reasons and believes since Wenclawska is an acting-heavy role, it likely helped her get the part considering her background.

“Ruza’s character also has a significant dialect, and I think these aspects of her character led her to being more of an actor-friendly role in a musical,” Zheng said. “I also think Ruza has been played by an Asian woman or a woman of color, and I do think that’s something significant, being that she’s representative of immigrants in this story.”

WHAT IT MEANS TO SACRIFICE

Suffs is known for international casting, including Asian-American women playing Wenclawska. As a child of immigrants from China, Zheng has found common ground with the character.

“Ruza’s character immigrated here as a child with her parents,” Zheng said. “She was a labor activist and was a child laborer; she worked in factories as a child. That’s a significant part of her background in the musical. That feeds the things she says and the opinions she has in this musical. And I think, as someone who is a child of immigrants, I deeply understand—as many people do—what it means to sacrifice and suffer and try to build a better life for yourself. There’s no guarantee, it’s all in the pursuit of that American dream.”

Wenclawska’s story in Suffs is one of a family and being an immigrant who fights for her rights.

“Those are critical parts of her character that I think as an AsianAmerican and child of immigrants that I also understand deeply,” Zheng said. “At the same time, I don’t understand what it means to be Polish. And I think my deepest fear and greatest desire when playing this role is that she wouldn’t be a caricature of a Polish person, but would be as authentic as possible, within the confines of a Broadway musical.”

CHOOSING JOY

For Zheng, there are two moments from the show that are especially important to her. One is the song “The Report,” which she enjoys singing because of its musical and physical complexity. Another special moment

Joyce Meimei Zheng

comes near the end of the show, after the suffragettes have won the right to vote.

“Ruza says basically, ‘I’m leaving and I’m going to pursue acting on Broadway,’” Zheng said. “And she has this big moment where she says, ‘I’m going to do something that makes people feel joy.’ It’s just wonderful to have a moment where this ferocious and unapologetically kind of angry character chooses joy.”

The actress has also found special moments in seeing how audiences react to the show.

“For me, it’s easy to forget the impact that our show has and once I go to stage door and meet people, it’s like ‘There are real people here, and they’ve moved by it,’” she said.

Being on tour has been a thrill, and she enjoys going to different places and exploring new cities. She also had an opportunity to spend some time at home in New Jersey recently when the show was in Philadelphia, and she stopped in on a junior production of Suffs. Later that week, the young performers saw her in the touring production.

“That was really awesome,” Zheng said. “I got to fangirl over them, and they fangirled over us.”
