CORNELIUS MCMOYLER FINDS HIS GROOVE WITH STEREOPHONIC

Cornelius McMoyler who plays Simon in the national touring company of Stereophonic, remembers the first time he became interested in acting. He was on a field trip with his school and saw a youth theatre production of Oliver!

“Up to that point, I’d only seen adults acting,” he said. “But seeing kids doing it on stage, I knew I wanted to do it. I didn’t know if I’d be any good at it, but that planted the seed in me.”

He soon started acting at school and locally in his community, with his first role coming in sixth grade, playing Edmund in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. He continued performing throughout high school until music got a hold of him.

“I was doing everything on stage in high school—improv, musical theatre, drama, even hosting shows,” McMoyler said. “But in my senior year, I started to get really into music. Let’s be honest, when you’re 18 years old, the people hanging out in bands are way cooler than the people hanging out in the drama department. Especially living in San Francisco, I was totally sworn into being a musician.”

A LITTLE VOICE

So, McMoyler took a seven-year sabbatical from acting. He went to NYU to study music and played in bands, made records and toured when he had time. But in the back of his mind, a little voice was always leading him back to the stage.

“It took me getting my degree and trying to make money as an engineer, assisting in studios and feeling so far from the stage—so far from the thing that inspired me—to realize I was disenchanted,” he said. “I wondered if I still liked acting, let alone if I could still do it.”

That led him to audition for a play, which he landed, though he felt as if he was a little out of his element since everyone else had gone through undergraduate acting programs.

“I went to the Meisner Studio for two years and did the full program,” McMoyler said. “Then I joined a rep company at the Flea Theater [in NYC]. Then I went to Juilliard, got my master’s, and graduated in 2023.”

ALL EYES TURNED TO HIM

It was while at Juilliard that a casting director asked if anyone played any instruments and all eyes turned to McMoyler. He was then asked to tape for all the musicians of Stereophonic, even though no one knew anything about the show at the time.

He was a finalist to play Simon at Playwrights Horizons when it debuted in 2023, though he wasn’t cast. However, when it transferred to Broadway a year later, the director asked him to understudy the role, as well as two other parts.

“When the tour was happening, they asked me to audition again,” McMoyler said. “I first auditioned as Grover, then they brought me back for Simon, and here we are.”

Being on tour as Simon is a dream for the actor/musician, as he gets to combine his two loves every night. Plus, McMoyler gets a kick out of playing the English-based character.

“He’s the driest character I’ve ever had to play and some of that comes from his Britishness—there’s an inherent dryness to that,” he said. “He’s not indulgent. He’s not the substance abuser, the narcissist, the ingénue. He’s the manager and has a tired sense of humor to him. A slightly patronizing humor. It’s been a great acting lesson, just keep everything dry.”

FEELING MYSTERIOUS

Unlike Broadway, where Simon was played by an actor in his 50s, McMoyler is 34 and still the oldest of the touring cast.

“The dynamics have shifted a bit so it’s a different ecosystem of statuses in the touring production,” he said. “I love touring. Swinging between cities feels mysterious. I feel like a spy—like I swing into Chicago, get to my hotel, and think, ‘Where should I have dinner?’ It’s an amazing way to see this country. You realize how huge it is, and how many little micro-cultures exist.”

He’s also enjoying the cast chemistry on the road.

“You hear about Broadway and how everyone seems like a big happy family, but behind the scenes, people are sequestered in dressing rooms,” McMoyler

said. “We’re lucky. Everyone in this cast is hungry. No one’s a star. We’re all excited to be here. We met each other with the same glint in our eyes and we’re all so excited to be part of it.”

WHERE HE FOUND THE BEST PASTA

On his first night in any new city, McMoyler will have Italian food for dinner.

“It’s not even a ritual I set up, it just happens,” he said. “I used to live in Italy, and Italian food has a very comforting effect on me. The best pasta I’ve had on tour was in Seattle.”

He’s looking forward to finding a great Italian place when he’s in Charlotte. Although he’s never performed on the Blumenthal stage, when he was playing drums in a band, he stopped in the city as part of an East Coast tour.

“It was a crowded house show in someone’s living room,” McMoyler said. “I have great memories of that.”

Even though the Stereophonic tour takes up most of his time, he still finds time to continue making music.

“For a while I had my head buried in acting, but now I’m legitimately trying to push both my acting career and my music career,” he said. “Before we left on tour, I released my first single on Spotify (“King of Myself”), the first thing I’ve professionally put out under my own name. New York theatre is my bread and butter. It’s what I’ve trained in and done professionally. But I’m also really interested in playing shows, putting out more songs and maybe putting a band together.”

(an author’s note)

I’m writing this from my apartment in Brooklyn, just as we’re starting tour rehearsals. It’s a bittersweet moment, because after 10 years of writing and building this thing in workshop after workshop—and two full years after that of rehearsing various iterations of it (including the replacement cast for Broadway and West End productions) we are nearing the end of our journey with a project that has changed all our lives.

The night before the Tonys, Daniel Aukin and I were loitering onstage at the Koch Theatre as part of a rehearsal for the broadcast—and just then it hit me, how absolutely crazy all of this was. I said, “At some point we need to go to a coffee shop or something and sit down and process what’s happened.” Daniel looked at me very pointedly. He said, “David, we will never be able to process this!” And we both broke out in peals of crazy laughter—because it was so hilariously true.

As artists, our successes and failures are equally absurd. We are simply hostages to our impulses: we do what excites us and we try to make something we love. Everything else is outside of our control. This production is our labor of love.

To accommodate the demands of a national tour, this version of Stereophonic has been edited down to just under 3 hours. We have affectionately dubbed this cut of the play “The Radio Edit” and it was both a challenge and a delight to pare the play down and get it even sharper and more focused. We hope you enjoy it as much as we loved making it for you.
