GRANT REYNOLDS BRINGS HEART, HUMOR AND REPRESENTATION TO MAMMA MIA!

Grant Reynolds’ journey to playing Sky in the national tour of Mamma Mia! has been anything but ordinary.

From growing up just outside Chicago, to studying at Carnegie Mellon University to touring the country and stepping onto a Broadway stage, his path reflects both persistence and a willingness to leap into the unknown.

“I grew up doing sports my whole life,” Reynolds said. “Theatre was always my favorite hobby.”

That hobby, which began in sixth grade and intensified through middle and high school, eventually became a crossroads decision.

“For me, my future was either law school, med school or Broadway,” he said. “And I didn’t want to say I didn’t try, so I went for it.”

BUILDING MOMENTUM

Reynolds auditioned for his dream schools and landed at Carnegie Mellon, one of the country’s top drama programs. From there, the momentum built quickly. After graduating in 2021, he appeared in

Billy Porter’s directorial debut film

Anything’s Possible, a full-circle moment for the young actor. Porter, like Reynolds, is a Carnegie Mellon alum. Plus, Reynolds had seen Porter perform in Kinky Boots on Broadway—the first Broadway show he ever saw live!

“That was super special,” Reynolds said.

Still, it was Mamma Mia! that would transform his career trajectory in unexpected ways. When Reynolds first received the audition notice for the show, he hesitated because it hadn’t been on Broadway in 15 years, and he hadn’t seen a refreshed cast. More notably, he hadn’t seen a full-time Black actor playing Sky.

“I hadn’t seen a guy of color playing my role,” he said. “So, I thought, this is going to be interesting.”

Though he was already familiar with ABBA’s iconic music, noting it was always played in his home growing up, he wasn’t deeply familiar with the show’s story or the character of Sky. Rather than overthink it, Reynolds adopted a simple mindset: win the room.

WINNING THE ROOM

“When you don’t know if something is necessarily for you, I always lean into the idea of just winning the room—the producer, the director, whoever’s there,” he said. “This industry is so small. Making a real connection and doing the best you can in any space with creatives is always a good thing.”

One audition turned into two. Two became three. Soon, Reynolds was cast in the 25th Anniversary Tour. He spent 21 months traveling the country before the production made an unlikely pivot to Broadway. When the company learned they would be transferring to New York’s Winter Garden Theatre, it felt like a homecoming.

“It was surreal,” Reynolds said. “None of us really knew that was going to happen. We all got to do it together as a company. It felt monumental.”

For Reynolds, performing on Broadway wasn’t just a professional milestone; it was personal validation.

“My favorite part is getting into the flippers every night [for “Lay All Your Love on Me”],” he said. “It’s very challenging. My feet need extra TLC. But I don’t know how many times I’ll get to say I danced on flippers on Broadway. That’s pretty special.”

HIDDEN GEMS

Now rehearsing for the third leg of the national tour, Reynolds returns to the road with a strong sense of camaraderie. Many company members have traveled this unusual arc together—tour to Broadway and back to tour— creating a deep bond.

“We have a really established band going on,” he said. “That just really means us being there for each other. Sharing Airbnbs, organizing outings and making memories offstage strengthens the chemistry audiences see each night.”

When Reynolds goes to a new location, he makes it a point to research each city’s hidden gems, often turning to TikTok or Instagram for niche recommendations.

“I love to dive into each city’s cultural identity,” he said. “Whether it’s a coffee shop or a cool neighborhood, I like to take a walk and really experience it.”

As Sky, Reynolds brings sincerity and warmth to the role. He describes the character as “earnest” and “solid,” qualities that anchor the show’s romantic core amid its larger-than-life musical numbers.

A MYRIAD OF DREAMS

He also values what the refreshed production represents in 2026.

“It’s still the funny, knee-slapping comedy that brings families together,” he said, “But it’s very reflective of what 2026 is now.”

That includes broader representation and a contemporary lens on relationships and identity— elements that resonate with younger audiences discovering the show for the first time.

Though Reynolds hopes to return to Broadway and pursue more film and television work, he remains grateful for where he is.

“I’m thankful to be able to tell stories in every capacity I can,” he said. “I have a myriad of dreams and this is just a dream experience.”

JUDY CRAYMER (Creator/Producer) originated the idea for Mamma Mia! and in 1996 founded Littlestar Services Limited with Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Richard East to produce the stage musical in London. She has since produced over 50 productions of Mamma Mia! in 16 languages worldwide. In recognition of her international success, Judy received a Woman of the Year Award in 2002 and was appointed CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2020 for services to theater and charity. In 2008, she produced Mamma Mia! The Movie, starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, which received Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations and grossed over $600 million worldwide. She later produced Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. From September 2021 to January 2023, Judy served as Chairman of the Board and Independent Non-Executive Director of Universal Music Group. Mamma Mia! celebrated its 25th anniversary in London’s West End in April 2024, and Judy was thrilled by the show’s recent return to Broadway.

RICHARD EAST (Producer) is an originating producer of Mamma Mia!, having been involved since its inception. A Tony nominee, he has worked in the entertainment business for 35 years in Australia, London and the U.S.

BJÖRN ULVAEUS (Music & Lyrics) was born April 25, 1945, in Gothenburg. In the mid-’50s, Björn fell in love with rock ’n’ roll and skiffle. By the early ’60s, he was a member of a folk group called The West Bay Singers. 1966: Björn met with Benny Andersson, a member of Sweden’s number-

one pop group, The Hep Stars. 1970: Björn and Benny started releasing records as a duo. 1972–82: ABBA. 1982: Björn and Benny started writing the musical Chess with Tim Rice. 1986: Chess opened in London’s West End. 1990: Björn and Benny started to write a new musical. Kristina From Duvemala opened 1995. Björn writes most of the lyrics for the Benny Andersson Orchestra and has involved himself in the stagings of Mamma Mia! 2008: Mamma Mia! The Movie was released. 2016: Mamma Mia! The Party opened in Stockholm, with Björn as one of the producers. 2018: Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was released. 2021: ABBA announced the release of the first album in 40 years, Voyage, as well as a virtual stage show, Voyage, which opened in a new custom-built arena in London in 2022. Björn is president of CISAC, an umbrella organization for all royalty collecting societies for songwriters in the world.

BENNY ANDERSSON (Composer) was born December 16, 1946, in Stockholm. 1952: he received accordion lessons from his father and grandfather. 1964–68: Benny was a member of The Hep Stars, Sweden’s most popular rock band in the ’60s. During this time, he began composing music. “Sunny Girl” and “Wedding” were huge hits for The Hep Stars. 1972–82: ABBA. 1982–84: Benny composed the music (together with Björn Ulvaeus and Tim Rice) for the musical Chess. 1987: he began collaborating with Orsa Spelman rooted in Swedish folk music. 1990–95: working with Björn, Benny composed the music to Kristina fran Duvemala, which premiered in October 1995. 1995: received the title of professor from the Swedish government. 2001: his collaboration with Orsa Spelman led to the formation of Benny Andersson’s Orchestra, a 16-man constellation with vocalists Helen Sjoholm and Tommy Korberg. This has resulted in 11 albums and several summer tours. 2007: Benny was inducted into the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. 2008: was appointed Honorary Doctor of the College of Humanities at Stockholm University, and at Luleå University of Technology in 2012. Founder of ABBA Voyage, a virtual stage show, which opened in London in 2022.

ANDREW BRUCE (Sound Designer) began his theater career at Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 1968 and was appointed head of sound at the Royal Opera House in 1971. A year later, he co-founded Autograph Sound, a leading British sound design and rental company that celebrated its 50th year in 2022. He was appointed Associate Sound Designer for Evita, Cats and Starlight Express and Sound Consultant on the original Paris version of Les Misérables in 1981. He subsequently designed the sound for the 1985 London production and all its reproductions. Original West End productions include Song and Dance, Chess, Follies, Into the Woods, Children of Eden, City of Angels, Martin Guerre, The Fix, Witches of Eastwick, Mamma Mia!, Miss Saigon, The Secret Garden, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins
