It’s Carmela’s birthday! Which means it’s time for this imaginative little genius to make the perfect wish. A wish is a mysterious thing. Especially the ones we hold dearest, the ones we don’t dare speak out loud. Or perhaps we can’t speak them out loud, because there are no words powerful enough to capture the longing we carry in the depths of our hearts. The deepest, most mysterious wishes transcend language. We often wish for things beyond our control, things that might seem impossible from our current vantage point. But the simple act of wishing can prepare us to believe in a different future. Wishes can propel us into a state of hope, providing the initial spark that helps us envision something new, something that might seem impossible without that small act of faith. In this way, the moment when we shut our eyes, prepare our wish, and blow out the candles becomes sacred time. Our entire being vibrates with the anticipation of breathing something new into the world. It’s not unlike that moment when the lights go down before the show starts in the theater. There’s the same anticipation, the same act of hope, willing something that might seem impossible into existence. So as the lights dim in the Goizueta Stage today, we invite you to join Carmela on her journey, and make the deepest, most mysterious wish imaginable. This place was built for nothing less. D

ell Howlett will never forget seeing the classic musical Fiddler on the Roof the first time.

On the surface, one might assume that a musical of a Jewish community in pre-revolution Russia may not be his cultural experience. But as a Black American, he understands tradition. And at the core of that production is a story about tradition. “So that’s my window into understanding the story,” he says. “Good theater, I think, affords us all the opportunity to find our window into the story. Good theater is particular about representing a certain story. The cultures, the value systems, the details that allow someone sitting in the audience to say, ‘Oh yeah, that’s like my bubbe.’ Or ‘That’s my grandma.’ Or ‘This reminds me of that time when I was in school.’ It really is that.” That’s what Howlett, the director and choreogrpaher of the Alliance’s production of Carmela Full of Wishes, hopes for audiences who see the production. Inspired by the award-winning picture book by Matt de la Peña with illustrations by Christian Robinson, Carmela Full of Wishes follows the events of the story’s main character, Carmela, on her birthday. She is finally old enough to join her big brother on his daily errands. This is an opportunity she has awaited with anticipation. When she finds a lone dandelion growing stubbornly through the sidewalk, she’s told it can grant a wish. But she can’t just make any kind of wish. The wish MUST be the right wish! As her brother drags her along on his errand runs, we witness Carmela’s journeys through her imagination as she grapples with deciding on what wish to make. This isn’t Howlett’s first foray with a production adapted from a Matt de la Peña book at the Alliance. Last season, he directed and choreographed Milo Imagines the World. At the center of both stories is a young person grappling with real-life situations and their imagination. For Howlett, returning to the Alliance to direct Carmela Full of Wishes is a gift.

“Matt de la Peña is a writer who is really committed to representing the genius and imagination of young people in really vivid ways in his writing. I think as we continue that exploration of his work following Milo Imagines the World, we are reminded that, as we endure life’s hardships, or the challenges of just being human — especially in today’s world and climate — that imagination, a dream space, and/or the ability to have that outlet becomes not just necessary, but it becomes urgent.” It becomes an act of survival, according to Howlett. “Milo’s art, and our representation of that, was so important to me because the story was not just about a young person making circles on a page. This was a young person who was looking at absorbing their environment. We’re in that situation

again,” he says. “Yes, we are invited into a kind of sweetness around Carmela, right? We’re invited into a kind of childlikeness around Carmela. But we realize by the end of the piece that this young person is dealing with something that feels almost operatic.” When describing Carmela Full of Wishes, Howlett thoughtfully uses the phrase, “an American story.” “Matt’s intention for writing this story, one of the things that he is really celebrated for in the writing of it, Production Director and Choreographer Dell Howlett during rehearsal for the Alliance Theatre’s 2026/27 Season production is making sure that young Mexican of Carmela Full of Wishes. Americans feel seen within the story; and see a story where there is a young Mexican American hero at the center of it,” he says. “But there is also this celebration of the other. This kind of celebration of stories that are not often told or not often celebrated on our stages.” Through Carmela Full of Wishes, there is an expansion of the imagination of the American family and what represents an American family. “Every family in the American tradition is not 2.5 children and two parents. Some families are enduring and reconciling. Some families, like Milo’s family, are enduring a parent who is incarcerated. In Carmela Full of Wishes, this is a very particular American story about a family trying to endure and trying to reconcile.” And so, says Howlett, Carmela Full of Wishes is intentionally set in Mission, Texas, to ensure its grounded as an authentically American story. “Bringing that community alive, that Tejano culture alive, and really standing on that dramaturgically to show that there is a community supporting Carmela and her brother.” A hallmark of the production is making Carmela’s community come alive and doing so with dignity. “Carmela Full of Wishes is set in a Latin community, and I am a Black American. And so, I enter it with reverence,” he says. “We’ve assembled an extraordinary group of artists, Latin artists, designers, and individuals who really bring their understadning of the story to life. Carmela is all of us, right? It is the story of how we endure; how we celebrate community.”

CARMELA: A WISH OF YOUR OWN STORY BY

Close your eyes. Imagine blowing out the candles on your birthday cake. Tossing a shiny copper penny into a deep, echoing well. Catching a falling eyelash on the tip of your finger, whispering a secret in its direction, and sending it flying into the wind. Across the globe, human beings have invented countless beautiful traditions just to give our hopes a physical home. We call these “wishes.” In many cultures, people tie vibrant ribbons to the branches of wishing trees, letting the breeze carry their dreams up to the sky. In others, they look to the night sky, waiting for a single streak of white light to wish upon a falling star. In Japan, people write their wishes on wooden plaques known as ema and hang them on shrines to the gods. No matter how we make a wish, we take a big, invisible feeling from inside our hearts and put it out into the universe.

Carmela is a girl who holds many wishes in her heart. But Carmela’s biggest wish is for her Papi. Carmela shows us how wishing can transform into missing. When you miss a person you love, it can oftentimes feel sad and confusing. The world can feel a little too big without them. But even in that bigness, wishing on an object gives us somewhere to put the missing. It gives shape to a feeling that might otherwise just float around inside us with nowhere to land. That is why it is so important to remember the items, places, and sounds that weave together to remind you of the people you miss. The smell of their favorite sweatshirt. A song you always listen to together. The crinkle of their eyes as they laugh at a joke. These small details can help you weave your special memories of that person into a gorgeous tapestry, a bridge that keeps them close to you, no matter how far away they might be. Who is someone you miss? What objects can you imagine when you think about this person? Can you remember what they smell like? What their voice sounds like, low or high, fast or slow, the way they say your name? Can you picture their smile when they see you, or the specific feeling of their arms around you in a hug? What clothes they wear—a certain jacket, a pair of worn-in shoes? Their favorite candy, the way they hold a fork while they eat, or laugh at their own jokes before they finish telling them? Hold all of that in your mind for a second. That collection of small, specific things … that’s not just a memory. In a way, you just made a wish of your own.

He has received playwriting commissions from various organizations, including Kennedy Center, Chicago Children’s Theatre, First Stage, Houston Grand Opera, Honolulu Theatre for Youth, Alley Theatre, Purple Rose Theatre Company, Express Children’s Theatre, Milwaukee’s United Community Center, Talento Bilingüe de Houston, Houston Community College, and Zoological Society of Milwaukee. His award-winning play Luchadora! is published by Dramatic Publishing Inc. Other plays include Blue Bullets, On The Wings of a Mariposa, The History of Mexicans in 10 Minutes, The Day the Music Came Back, Brown Only, and Piggsville, a quasi-adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. He co-wrote the virtual musical Unmuted with composer Debbie Wicks La Puma. Alvaro holds an MFA in Writing for the Stage and Screen from Northwestern University, a BA in English–Creative Writing from the University of Houston and an AA in Communications from Houston Community College. Up next, she is developing a new Opera, Forsythe is Flooding: The Joy of Lake Lanier, and proudly serves on the ARTS-ATL Artist Advisory Council. “My mission is the pursuit of what connects our different communities and how we create art that liberates us to imagine a more inclusive future.” CHRISTOPHER MOSES (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) has been working in professional theatre for twenty years and in 2022 was given the Governor’s Award for Arts in Humanities for his body of work. In January of 2011, Chris took on the position of Director of Education at the Alliance Theatre, overseeing the Alliance Theatre Institute (twice recognized as an Arts Model by the Federal Department of Education), Theatre for Youth & Families, and the Acting Program. Since taking over this position, Chris has expanded the reach and impact by making the Alliance Theatre Education department a vital resource for advancing the civic agenda of Atlanta. This work is accomplished through deep and sustained partnerships with social service organizations throughout the city. Under his leadership, the Alliance launched its Kathy & Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young program, which provides fully interactive professional theater experiences for children of all abilities from ages newborn through five years old; the Alliance Teen Ensemble, which performs world premiere plays commissioned for and about teens; the Palefsky Collision Project, where teens produce a new work after colliding with a classic text; expanded the Alliance’s summer camp program to include over 3,000 children in multiple locations across Atlanta; and Alliance@ work, a professional development program designed for the business sector — the latest offering of which uses theatre practice to create a culture of civility in the workplace. In 2014, Chris added the title Associate Artistic Director, and has continued to expand the Alliance’s education offerings. During his tenure in this position, the Alliance has produced over a dozen world premiere plays for young audiences, including Pancakes, Pancakes! by Ken Lin, The Dancing Granny by Jireh Breon Holder, Max Makes a Million by Liz Diamond, and The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Madhuri Shekar. Currently, the Alliance serves over 100,000 students pre-k—12 each season, as well as over 4,000 adults through its extensive education offerings. In 2023, he was named Artistic Director of the Alliance Theatre.

BRANDON KAHN (Managing Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2025 as Managing Director following his role as General Manager at Houston’s Alley Theatre since 2018. As General Manager, Brandon worked closely with the Artistic Director and Managing Director in handling the day-to-day operations of the Theatre. During his time at the Alley, Brandon focused on improving operational systems to enhance the workplace environment for all of those involved. Brandon was instrumental in multiple transfer productions from Born with Teeth that will play in the West End this fall, Cambodian Rock Band which was a multi-city co-production, and the recently announced Off-Broadway transfers of Thornton Wilder’s The Emporium and Torera. Brandon came to the GM role from Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts, where he served over six seasons as Producing Manager, Associate Line Producer, and Resident Production Stage Manager. During his time at Williamstown, three productions moved to major New York City not-forprofits, including Martyna Majok’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Cost of Living, and five productions transitioned to Broadway. Prior to Williamstown, Brandon worked as a freelance stage manager for ten years where he worked on five Broadway shows, six Off-Broadway shows and many regional productions. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre Management and Producing from Columbia University. Additionally, Brandon has lectured at Columbia University and University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Brandon is on the Board and serves as Secretary for the League of Resident Theatres (LORT). He has served on multiple committees for LORT, including planning multiple conferences and serving as a mentor in the LORT EDI Mentorship Program. He completed the Business/ Civic Leadership Forum with the Center of Houston’s Future. His wife Jennifer is Founder of SCENERY BAGS, and they have two boys, Hudson and Judah.

SYNOPSIS Inspired by the award-winning picture book by Matt de la Peña, Carmela Full of Wishes is a lyrical and heartfelt story celebrating family, imagination, and the beauty of everyday life in a vibrant Latino community. Carmela is a dreamer, and on her birthday she is finally old enough to join her big brother on his daily errands—a small milestone that opens up a world of possibility.  As they go, Carmela’s imagination blooms, transforming familiar sights into small wonders, even as her brother reminds her to keep her feet on the ground. When Carmela finds a lone dandelion growing stubbornly through the sidewalk, she’s told it can grant a wish—but choosing the right one proves harder than she expected. With a heart full of hopes for her family, her community, and a future she can’t quite name, Carmela must decide what matters most before the day—and the fluffy seeds—drift away. Founded in 1968, Alliance Theatre is the leading producing theater in the Southeast, reaching more than 165,000 patrons annually. 20 | yourstoryyourstage When we first read about Carmela and Diego, a brother and sister making their way through a single day in their Mission, Texas, neighborhood while carrying both the weight of the world and the wonder of it, we recognized them immediately. We meet kids like Carmela and Diego every day. LaAmistad, meaning “friendship” in Spanish, was founded in Atlanta in 2001 after a local gym director noticed that children in the neighborhood needed a safe place to learn, grow, and simply be kids. Twenty-five years later, that idea has grown into a network of programs serving Latino students and families across metro Atlanta through afterschool tutoring, our Anímate Summer Academy, English language and adult education classes, parent partnership programs, and mentorship that supports students from elementary school through college and beyond. Like Carmela and Diego, many of the children in our programs are balancing more than their age suggests. They are growing up between two languages, two cultures, and sometimes with the added quiet worries that come with being a child in an immigrant family. Over the last 25 years we’ve learned that joy and hardship aren’t opposites; they live side by side, and community is often what makes room for both. That’s the heart of what we do. Every day, we see how small moments can change a life. A tutoring session becomes a place where a student gains confidence. An ESL class gives a parent the tools to speak with a teacher, advocate for their child, or simply feel more at home in a new country. Those moments add up. After serving more than 25,000 clients, we’ve learned that our work has always been about helping families feel supported, connected, and confident that they belong. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary this year, we’re proud that our name still reflects who we are. Friendship has always been at the heart of LaAmistad.
