DIRECTOR LEIGH SILVERMAN ON SUFFS, SISTERHOOD AND FINISHING THE FIGHT

Few things are more agonizing than the lethargy of progress. Shaina Taub’s musical Suffs theatricalizes just the last seven years of the fight for the 19th Amendment, and even without the context of the 65 years of fighting that came before the show’s hero Alice Paul took up the suffrage mantle, audiences can feel the arguments for keeping a cool head wear thin. Director Leigh Silverman has lived with this story and its clashing factions of forbearing diplomats and obstinate bulldozers for nearly a decade, all the while pushing ahead in her own patience-testing march. That is, building a brand-new musical—one with the audacity to have Broadway aspirations while being about women, by women and performed by an entirely female and nonbinary cast.

Silverman’s work on Suffs has earned her a Tony nomination—her second in a densely packed career that rarely accommodates moments of pause. “I will say, it feels sweet to be recognized,” she acknowledges, knowing full well her vocation as the creative support for new works and their writers leaves her contributions largely hidden—“very much my own design,” she adds. It’s a burst of personal validation for sure, something a life in the theater isn’t quick to offer. But given the company in which she finds herself on this year’s Tony roster, it’s also proof of Suffs’ own optimistic credo. The one that promises that progress is happening, even when everything feels painfully still.

“In 2006, I was the seventh woman to ever direct a Broadway play.” Silverman repeats: “In 2006. The seventh woman.”

The play was Lisa Kron’s comic drama Well, which she also directed at the Public Theater in 2004, her off-Broadway debut. Eighteen years and nearly 40 New York directing credits later, the landscape is notably different. “There are seven women nominated this year for Tonys,” she says. Her ear for narrative beats can’t resist the poetic symmetry. “I just think that feels significant,” Silverman says. “It feels to me that women directors are taken more seriously and we’re not such an anomaly.”

Silverman clearly remembers her first Tony season. It was exactly 10 years ago when she was nominated for directing a revival of Jeanine Tesori and Brian Crawley’s musical Violet, starring Sutton Foster, which she initially mounted unassumingly as a one-night concert at New York City Center—part of the debut season of Encores! Off-Center. “I had not really ever directed musicals before Violet,” she explains. “To be nominated in that moment was such a surprise and it was so incredible. I cared about that show so much.” Silverman was also the only woman in both directing categories—a nice coup for her, but one that had some unintended consequences. “All people really asked me about was what I was going to wear,” she remembers. “It was a very strange, lonely experience.”

It’s rare to hear Silverman describe anything having to do with the theater as “lonely.” She’s a creature of collaboration who identifies her relationships with writers as her “only measure for success as a director of new work.” Silverman finds creative partners like a heat-seeking missile, clocking every opportunity to build something new with artists as passionate as she is. Her match with Taub happened right after the 2014 opening of Violet when Suffs producer Rachel Sussman took her to one of the singer-songwriter’s Joe’s Pub concerts. “I was like, well, I want to work on a musical with her—now that I’m a musical director!”

After that, it was workshop after workshop, learning with Taub how to shape and distill a story that was being tossed around by the politics of the day. They finally got their world premiere in spring 2022 at the Public Theater, a mid-pandemic production that was too stop-and-start to be what they wanted. “I don’t think anyone felt like they could do their best work,” Silverman states frankly, recounting supply chain issues and a wave of COVID running through the cast during their third week of previews. “We canceled our whole opening week, we lost our whole third extension to COVID. It had this feeling of almost not really happening.” The next three workshops were done without a guarantee of any future life. “There are plenty of times where people take leaps and it doesn’t work out,” says Silverman—a lesson a few decades in the theater teaches you. Then again, she says, there are the times, like with Suffs, when “circumstances all come together where it feels like you’re flying.” But it’s the power of the collective that stands out in Silverman’s mind. “You can feel the company’s enthusiasm for telling the story, their love for each other,” she says. “They believe in it, and they believe in what we’ve all made together.”

PLAYWRIGHT

ADAM RAPP ON BUILDING A WORLD OF EXTREMES FOR THE OUTSIDERS

The Outsiders was published in 1967, the year before Adam Rapp was born, but he vividly remembers devouring S.E. Hinton’s now-classic YA novel in his dorm room at military school. The tale of the orphaned Curtis brothers and their “Greaser” friends, narrated by 14-year-old Ponyboy, struck a nerve with Rapp, the eldest child of a working-class single mother. Almost four decades after he first encountered the novel, this prolific playwright, novelist, screenwriter and director made his Broadway debut as a musical book writer (with Justin Levine) in an exhilarating adaptation of The Outsiders

Known for his fondness for dark material and disaffected characters, Rapp is charmingly cheerful on the topic of his new show, which has been in the works for almost a decade. It helps that his first Broadway production, the 2019 drama The Sound Inside, received six Tony nominations, including Best Play, and his latest novel, Wolf at the Table, was published to glowing reviews. As for how he and his baby brother, Anthony, ended up in the top ranks of New York theater, Rapp says simply, “I have no idea.”

You are the ultimate multi-hyphenate writer and director. How does it feel to add musical theater book writer to the list?

It’s a shock, honestly. I was a novelist who became a playwright who fell in love with theater and started directing plays. I had no musical theater training and I’ve never been a performer, so when I was approached about this, I thought, “Wow, they must be confusing me with somebody else.” Then I heard two songs that [Jonathan Clay and Zach Chapman of] Jamestown Revival had written, and I thought, “How can I not involve myself with this?” The music is so beautiful, and it feels very, very honest and sincere in expressing the way teenage boys think about the world.

When did you read The Outsiders for the first time, and what did you love about it?

I read it when I was 15, and it had a profound effect on me. I come from a similar background as Ponyboy. My mother was a single mom raising three kids on a nurse’s salary. We grew up in an apartment complex in Joliet, Illinois, so I identified with the idea of what “family” means when you come from a broken home that’s lower middle class. It was my first reading experience in which I felt seen, and I think a lot of kids feel that way when they read the book. What was your goal in turning The Outsiders into a musical? What kind of theatrical experience did you envision?

I wanted it to have almost operatic extremes. Adolescent life is so dramatic. Growing up in this country, there is so much pressure to succeed, so much pressure about sexuality, and I wanted the audience to feel that. I said to my collaborators that I wanted this world to be as brutal as it is tender, as bleak as it is beautiful; we needed to fill in all the extremes, because that’s what being 14, 15 and 16 is like.

I love the fact that you provided stage directions for the riveting rumble between the Greasers and their rival gang, the Socs.

I wrote it because I thought the rumble was one of the most successful parts of the movie. We were all on the same page that this should be a non-musical moment. It should be the sound of bodies and fists meeting flesh and boys crying out, with a soundscape to create the mood. I sat next to Matt Dillon [who played tough guy Dallas in the 1983 film version] when he came to see the show, and he was blown away by the rumble. He told me that Francis Ford Coppola was going to delay the rumble a day or two because they were expecting rain, and Matt convinced him to go ahead and shoot it in the rain. I remember how visceral and intense it was, and I thought how cool it would be if at the end of the rumble, you can’t recognize a Greaser or a Soc because they’re all undone by the rain and the mud. [Choreographers] Rick and Jeff [Kuperman] embraced that idea and took it even further, with big moments that are abstracted toward the end, and [director] Danya [Taymor] added some surprising elements.

In agreeing to write the book, did you realize you were taking on the most challenging element in a musical?

I did not, and it could be frustrating. I control almost everything I do when I’m writing a novel or directing one of my plays or working on TV as a showrunner. In this case, I was one of five people trying to tell this story, so it was humbling. You see your scene get winnowed down and absorbed by songs; I used to joke that I started to feel like I was just the gardener. But I’ve come back around to really loving the process. I’ve been hearing this music for more than nine years, and it still makes me emotional. I feel very lucky to have my words living around these songs.

What was it like to meet S.E. Hinton when you traveled to Tulsa with the cast?

I wasn’t anticipating how incredibly powerful that was going to be. I have a young adult novel called 33 Snowfish that made a list of the top 50 books for young adults, and what was number one? The Outsiders! So I was kind of intimidated to meet Susie. She suffers no fools, she says it like it is, she loves to have a drink and a one-on-one talk; she’s salt of the earth. I guess the word for how I felt is privileged. I can’t wait for her to see the show, especially one of the final moments that involves Ponyboy’s notebook. I’m so proud to be part of the team trying to make her novel come to life in a new way.

What are the odds that two brothers from Joliet, Illinois, would make it to Broadway, one as the star of Rent and the other as the writer of a musical?

You’re telling me! I have no idea. Anthony started acting when he was very young; he was in a couple of national tours, and my mom would stop nursing to help his career. He was always sort of a north star in our family. He’s a registered genius—when he was seven, he took a test and his IQ was like 197. He was two years ahead in school and quit at 16 to go to NYU film school, so I’m not surprised he flourished and found success. To be honest, I’m more surprised that I’ve had any kind of success because I was kind of a knucklehead. I was sent to a military academy for high school, which had nothing to do with theater. I was a jock—I was a basketball player; I ran cross-country; my life was sports. I discovered fiction writing in college, but it wasn’t until I saw Anthony in Six Degrees of Separation in 1991 that I realized plays weren’t just musicals. I saw John Guare’s plays and Nicky Silver’s plays, Sam Shepard and Caryl Churchill, and that’s when I realized theater can do something really interesting and dark and artful. Theater kind of found me. I just lucked into falling in love with the thing that would give me a career. Well, your distinctive voice is being appreciated now. That must feel good. Look, when I started out, I didn’t know what I was doing. I didn’t have any training. I was just absorbing everything I could to develop my own aesthetic. I always responded to seeing intense things go down, when you forget you’re watching a scene framed in front of you. If we’re going to fight on stage or have sex on stage, let’s make the audience think it’s really happening! Let’s really go there. That’s what drove me. They’re coming to see a story, but let’s try to make them want to rush the stage.

The Outsiders is scheduled to come to Citizens Opera House starting March 31, 2026. For more information and features, head to Broadway.com.

ABOUT THE THEATRE

Welcome back to Boston’s oldest, continually operating theatre — the Emerson Colonial Theatre. This revered venue reopened its doors in 2018 with the pre-Broadway, world-premiere engagement of Moulin Rouge! The Musical. That spectacular engagement has been followed by the pre-Broadway runs of David Byrne’s American Utopia, Plaza Suite starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick, A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical, and The Queen of Versailles starring Kristin Chenoweth. These engagements have renewed the Colonial’s tradition as a birthplace of new Broadway productions.

The building, conceived by architect Clarence H. Blackall and designer H.B. Pennell, originally opened in 1900 on the former site of the Boston Public Library, with a lavish production of Ben-Hur The show featured a gargantuan cast of 350 and even boasted an on-stage chariot race with eight live horses. Since the theatre’s grand opening 124 years ago, it has been home to countless productions, special events and performance groups, including the Ziegfeld Follies, which played the Colonial following its premiere Broadway production. The troupe would perform here seven more times during the early 1900s.

The Colonial is also the storied birthplace of some of the most legendary and beloved works of musical theatre over the past century: Anything Goes, Porgy and Bess, Oklahoma! (which was titled Away We Go! in Boston), Carousel, Candide, A Little Night Music, Follies, On the Twentieth Century, Woman of the Year, La Cage aux Folles, My One and Only, and Grand Hotel among others. Over the years, a cavalcade of notable performers have walked the Colonial’s boards: Barbra Streisand, Ethel Merman, George M. Cohan, Danny Kaye, Carol Burnett, Elaine Stritch, Tommy Tune, Chita Rivera, Joel Grey, Lauren Bacall, Carol Channing, Gwen Verdon, Julie Harris, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Natalie Portman. Among

those who saw their work fill the space: Rodgers and Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, Comden and Green, Arthur Miller, Stephen Sondheim, Hal Prince, Michael Bennett, Arthur Laurents, Lerner and Loewe, Jerry Herman, and Harvey Fierstein. Notable tours also played the venue including A Chorus Line, Sweet Charity, Bye Bye Birdie, Cabaret, The Secret Garden, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, and finally The Book of Mormon, the last show that played the building before it closed in 2015.

But the stories told on-stage are just one part of the theatre’s history. John Kander recalled, “If the walls of the ladies’ room could talk, they could write their own history of the musical theatre for the last 50 years.” One such piece of lore takes place during the out-of-town tryout of Dancin’ The show’s creator, Bob Fosse, was in search of a non-carpeted surface on which to demonstrate a new tap routine, and he chose the monolithic onyx table in what was the Ladies’ Lounge (now repurposed as the Orchestra Lounge). While dancing upon it, Fosse chipped the heavy stone and left his indelible mark. To this day, directors, actors, and of course choreographers seek out and touch the tabletop for good luck. In fact, you can visit the famed table, the oldest piece of furniture that exists in the building today, in the Orchestra Lounge.

Through two world wars, the Great Depression, the COVID-19 pandemic, and cultural shifts like the advent of cinema, television, and streaming content, the Emerson Colonial Theatre is still here. In 2025, Emerson Colonial Theatre will celebrate its 125th year as a theatre for the community, contributing to the rich cultural landscape of Boston with a new and varied program of touring Broadway shows, live music, comedy, and events.
