Makeup designer Craig Forrest-Thomas reveals the creation of Mrs. Doubtfire’s titular nanny.
BY Ruthie Fierberg
There is one nanny who — since 1993 — has bewitched audiences with her charm and humor. She can hip-hop, bebop, dance till she drops and yo-yo make a wicked cuppa cocoa. She is Euphegenia Doubtfire, dear.
Ever since actor Robin Williams hit the screen as divorced father Daniel Hillard — who disguises himself as an English nanny in order to see his children every day — families from around the world have adored Mrs. Doubtfire. And in 2020, a musical adaptation of the famed movie hit Broadway, ingratiating another generation to the hip old granny (and satisfying the nostalgia of 1990’s moviegoers). The musical adaptation first hit the road in 2023 and continues to make its way around North America.
In bringing new life to Mrs. Doubtfire through song, the team behind the musical still pays homage to the original, especially in the look of its title character. Between Broadway and the launch of a West End mounting and then the North American tour, “we changed the design of the mask,” makeup designer Craig Forrest-Thomas told Broadway News. “We made it a bit thicker [and] we changed the sculpt of the mask to make it more like Robin Williams.”
Forrest-Thomas and prosthetics specialist Rob Smith pored over images of Mrs. Doubtfire from the movie, freeze-framing in order to view the character’s face from every angle possible. The duo then built those references — her face shape, wrinkles and jowls — into the mask for Mrs. Doubtfire onstage.
Of course, the Doubtfire mask must work with the face of the actor playing the role. “Essentially we try and get the essence of Robin, but we also have to work with [the actor’s] features,” explained Forrest-Thomas. “Say someone has maybe a pronounced nose like mine. We couldn’t really build on that because we’d have a massive nose. So it’s about working with what they’ve got and trying to get those little winks of Robin.” After all, the designer wants any actor to be able to offer their take on the role.
The process of making the mask begins with a 3D scan of the actor’s head. That scan populates in a computer, where the designer can manipulate renderings to test ideas of where to build up the mask’s texture. One actor might need their cheekbones built up, while an understudy might have fuller cheeks but need a stronger jawline. Then, “Rob will do a live sculpt of the mask, so you can see it in clay form, which is then approved or reworked if there are any notes [from the director or producers],” said Forrest-Thomas. Once that design is finalized, Smith forms a mold of the clay. That mold is used to make all future masks by pouring silicone in it and allowing the silicone to set. (It’s like the plaster process shown in the movie’s famous transformation scene.)
Silicone is a tough material that not only allows each Doubtfire mask to last for a few months’ worth of performances, but its durability is also key in completing more than 10 quick-changes per show that the leading actor makes to transform between Daniel Hillard and Mrs. Doubtfire. During each quick-change into Mrs. Doubtfire, the tour’s head of makeup waits backstage, holding the mask at its thickest points (usually the neck area and top of the head). “Because it’s so
quick, [the actor’s] literally diving into the mask,” Forrest-Thomas said. The mask has straps at the top that go over the actors head and secure at the back of their neck and their ears poke through ear holes for a snug fit. “You hold the top of the mask on the straps, and you really give a good old yank forward so that everything’s just sucking into place.” Those straps hide under the wig of gray granny curls. Then the lipstick goes on (a rosy Chanel hue because “I thought she was a bit of a Chanel girl,” Forrest-Thomas said), the false teeth are inserted and the glasses rest below the brow.
But Forrest-Thomas’ design isn’t only about fitting an image — it must function practically. Mrs. Doubtfire sings, dances and raps. Robin Williams’ Mrs. Doubtfire voice allowed him to keep his mouth taut and small. But in a musical, actors need to be able to sing with open vowels and project to the back of the house. “The nose is cut out under the nostrils [above the mouth], and then it comes down and goes into the nasal folds so it sits perfectly” and allows for deep breathing, Forrest-Thomas described. The chin line is fairly low below the lips, leaving space for the mouth to move. That means the mask doesn’t cover 100 percent of any actor’s face; meticulous blending creates a seamless appearance between the mask and the actor’s skin that shows through.
“They’ll wear a base which will match to the mask or vice versa, so that we are getting that really nice natural blend once they’re onstage, but obviously they’ve got to be Daniel as well,” Forrest-Thomas pointed out. “It’s really difficult, the dual aspect of that.”
In terms of the makeup on the surface of the mask, “you want to create that lovely, pillowy pinkness — that Nana/Granny effect,” Forrest-Thomas said. “We build up the flesh tone, a bit of pink tone, and keep layering until you achieve that realness and the skin sort of comes through.”
And Forrest-Thomas has a secret for achieving coloring that fits the actors he’s working with and the quintessential Doubtfire likeness. “I use the makeup palette that [makeup designer] Greg Cannom used on the Mrs. Doubtfire film,” ForrestThomas revealed. “It’s his makeup palette — he designed it. You can buy it online, so I managed to find it and stocked up on it.”
The aesthetic link between the film and the musical iteration is one that Forrest-Thomas and the tuner’s creative team have labored over, and they know it’s worth it every time an audience reacts when they see the face that follows the famous, “Hello, poppets!”

BY Amy Rossman, Executive Director of Rodman for Kids
When you think back to the first time you experienced the magic of the arts, what stands out? Was it a play that transported you to another world? A performance that left you speechless? For kids, these moments are more than just memories— they are pathways to creativity, confidence, and connection. At Rodman for Kids, we believe every child deserves access to these transformative experiences, and our Theatre for Kids program ensures that every child is included in the magic.
As we approach the milestone of enriching our 100,000th kid through Theatre for Kids, I reflect on what that impact truly means. I’ve been with the organization for 20 of its 35 years and have witnessed firsthand the incredible impact of the arts on so many kids. Immersing kids in stories that inspire, entertain, and ignite their imaginations stays with them long after the applause fades, shaping how they see themselves and the world.
While many of us take access to the arts for granted, for some kids, attending a live theatre performance feels out of reach. Entry cost, transportation challenges, and lack of exposure are just some of the barriers to arts access. For children from under-resourced communities, these barriers often mean missing out on the chance to experience the power of live performance.
We know that barriers to accessing the theatre go beyond finances. Accessibility issues, such as accommodating sensory needs or ensuring performances are inclusive for kids with visual or hearing impairments, can also stand in the way. That’s why Rodman for Kids is dedicated to ensuring kids of ALL abilities can experience the joy of theatre. Last year, 35% of our tickets went to children
with differing abilities, including those with sensory needs, visual or hearing impairments. By working with our partners to provide tailored accommodations, we’re creating a space where every child can feel welcome and included.
Theatre does more than entertain; it opens minds, builds empathy, and fosters a sense of possibility. Research shows that children exposed to the arts perform better academically, develop stronger problem-solving skills, and cultivate deeper emotional understanding. But beyond the studies, the individual stories from kids, their families, and their teachers speak volumes.
Ashley, a young girl who experienced a Theatre for Kids performance, shared that she used to be a dancer but had to stop because of her panic attacks. After seeing a performance through the Theatre for Kids program, she shared that “seeing all of the dancers made me want to start dancing again; I wouldn’t have considered it if it weren’t for this experience.” Kacie Brown, a former Lawrence High School theatre teacher, expressed her gratitude for the program after taking her students to see Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird: “Rodman for Kids came in like a little miracle and gave kids this opportunity to see the world outside their couple of blocks.” These moments are evidence of the arts’ ability to unlock potential, build confidence, and encourage kids to dream bigger.
The success of Theatre for Kids is rooted in collaboration. This program thrives thanks to the partnerships we’ve built with more than 40 youth-focused nonprofits, generous donors, and local theatre companies, with no bigger champion for the program than Broadway In Boston. Together, we’re creating opportunities for kids to experience the arts and the many doors it opens. Every performance is a testament to what can be achieved when communities come together to invest in our youth.
While we’ve made great strides, there is still so much more to do. For every child who has experienced the thrill of live theatre, countless more are still waiting for their turn. At Rodman for Kids, we’re committed to growing this program and reaching even more kids in the years ahead, fostering new partnerships and finding innovative ways to make the arts accessible to all.
If you are reading this program book, you already understand the profound impact of the arts. If you’re inspired to help us bring this magic to more kids, I invite you to get involved. Whether it’s through a donation or encouraging your organization to partner with us, your support makes a difference. Together, we can continue to create life-changing opportunities for the next generation.
As we celebrate the arts tonight, let us also celebrate the potential they hold to transform lives. The theatre teaches us that everyone has a role to play, both on stage and behind the scenes. Thank you for being part of this journey and for believing in the power of the arts to empower, connect, and uplift us all.

Welcome back to Boston’s oldest, continually operating theatre — the Emerson Colonial Theatre. This revered venue reopened its doors in 2018 with the pre-Broadway, world-premiere engagement of Moulin Rouge! The Musical. That spectacular engagement has been followed by the pre-Broadway runs of David Byrne’s American Utopia, Plaza Suite starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick, A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical, and The Queen of Versailles starring Kristin Chenoweth. These engagements have renewed the Colonial’s tradition as a birthplace of new Broadway productions.
The building, conceived by architect Clarence H. Blackall and designer H.B. Pennell, originally opened in 1900 on the former site of the Boston Public Library, with a lavish production of Ben-Hur The show featured a gargantuan cast of 350 and even boasted an on-stage chariot race with eight live horses. Since the theatre’s grand opening 124 years ago, it has been home to countless productions, special events and performance groups, including the Ziegfeld Follies, which played the Colonial following its premiere Broadway production. The troupe would perform here seven more times during the early 1900s.
The Colonial is also the storied birthplace of some of the most legendary and beloved works of musical theatre over the past century: Anything Goes, Porgy and Bess, Oklahoma! (which was titled Away We Go! in Boston), Carousel, Candide, A Little Night Music, Follies, On the Twentieth Century, Woman of the Year, La Cage aux Folles, My One and Only, and Grand Hotel among others. Over the years, a cavalcade of notable performers have walked the Colonial’s boards: Barbra Streisand, Ethel Merman, George M. Cohan, Danny Kaye, Carol Burnett, Elaine Stritch, Tommy Tune, Chita Rivera, Joel Grey, Lauren Bacall, Carol Channing, Gwen Verdon, Julie Harris, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Natalie Portman. Among

those who saw their work fill the space: Rodgers and Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, Comden and Green, Arthur Miller, Stephen Sondheim, Hal Prince, Michael Bennett, Arthur Laurents, Lerner and Loewe, Jerry Herman, and Harvey Fierstein. Notable tours also played the venue including A Chorus Line, Sweet Charity, Bye Bye Birdie, Cabaret, The Secret Garden, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, and finally The Book of Mormon, the last show that played the building before it closed in 2015.
But the stories told on-stage are just one part of the theatre’s history. John Kander recalled, “If the walls of the ladies’ room could talk, they could write their own history of the musical theatre for the last 50 years.” One such piece of lore takes place during the out-of-town tryout of Dancin’ The show’s creator, Bob Fosse, was in search of a non-carpeted surface on which to demonstrate a new tap routine, and he chose the monolithic onyx table in what was the Ladies’ Lounge (now repurposed as the Orchestra Lounge). While dancing upon it, Fosse chipped the heavy stone and left his indelible mark. To this day, directors, actors, and of course choreographers seek out and touch the tabletop for good luck. In fact, you can visit the famed table, the oldest piece of furniture that exists in the building today, in the Orchestra Lounge.
Through two world wars, the Great Depression, the COVID-19 pandemic, and cultural shifts like the advent of cinema, television, and streaming content, the Emerson Colonial Theatre is still here. In 2025, Emerson Colonial Theatre will celebrate its 125th year as a theatre for the community, contributing to the rich cultural landscape of Boston with a new and varied program of touring Broadway shows, live music, comedy, and events. Visit emersoncolonialtheatre.com to see our upcoming line-up.
