6 | encore DIRECTOR JACK O’BRIEN ON BRINGING THE SOUND OF MUSIC BACK TO ITS ROOTS STORY BY
CQ Quintana Most are familiar with the beloved musical classic, The Sound of Music, which tells the story of Maria, a bold young woman who leaves the convent to serve as governess to a large family on the eve of Anschluss, the Nazi occupation of Austria. Ultimately, Maria falls in love with the children and their widowed father, Captain von Trapp, and together the family forges a plan to flee Austria. Some of the show’s best-known songs include “Edelweiss,” “Do-Re-Mi” and “My Favorite Things,” to name a few. Yet when invited to take the helm as director of the 2015 national tour company of The Sound of Music—now back on stage in an invigorated 2025 production— legendary, Tony-winning director Jack O’Brien nearly said no. O’Brien recalls, “When I opened the script and read, ‘Austria 1936,’ I thought to myself, I’ve never seen anything to do with The Sound of Music that looked like the 1930s.” Every version he’d seen of the 1959 musical had been steeped in the ’60s, including the film. “I realized that no one had ever done the piece the way it was written. The great privilege of staging [the current production is] people go in expecting to see the movie, and what they see is what the writers originally intended.” As O’Brien describes his work on the show, “I got to awaken sleeping beauty, and now, people are flipping over it!” The Sound of Music, with its unforgettable score, is the only Rodgers & Hammerstein musical that Oscar Hammerstein II didn’t write the book for—instead it was cowritten by renowned Broadway librettists Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. “I’ve been auditioning people to do this show for the last 10 years, and I’m telling you, I never tire of hearing that script,” says O’Brien. In a career spanning 60 impressive years including an array of Broadway and regional triumphs, O’Brien attests “working on this production has been one of the greatest pleasures of my entire life.” He describes “revelation after revelation [during the 2015 production process], and we opened, and it did extremely well, but all of us wanted to come back and finish the work, and that’s what we’ve done.” As a University of Michigan student in 1960, O’Brien sat in the audience of the original production of The Sound of Music at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre—little did he know the impact the musical would later have on his life. He recalls “Mary Martin in a little tree, trucked downstage. There was no amplification, and you heard this astonishing voice.” O’Brien felt Martin was, of course, a great star, but at 44 years old, she wasn’t quite suited for the role. Having an age-appropriate Maria “helps audiences understand that there’s real life involved here.” People often forget that The Sound of Music is inspired by the true story of orphan-turned matriarch Maria von Trapp and her memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. (On opening night of the current iteration of the show in Washington, D.C., Cayleigh Capaldi, who now plays the role of Maria, gifted O’Brien a copy of the original book.) Beyond consideration of the leading lady’s age, when O’Brien and his team started auditioning for the part of Maria, he said, “Don’t bring me any little Mary Martins. I want a girl jock. I want a hockey player. I want the greatest babysitter in the world.” As O’Brien observes, you learn this in the song “How Do Solve a Problem Like Maria,” because “clearly she’s not cut out to be a nun.” O’Brien is delighted with the response both from theatergoers and insiders. “It’s so much fun to see audiences discovering something they think they understand from a completely different vantage point,” says O’Brien, who has developed a friendship with librettist Crouse’s children, Lindsay and Timothy. The director recalls the librettist’s son telling him: “This is what they’ve waited all their lives for. Even though everybody loves the movie, if they really want to see the mother lode, they’ve got to see the show!”

JUST A LITTLE CHANGE Writer Linda Woolverton and director-choreographer Matt West describe the evolution of Beauty and the Beast from the screen to the stage — plus what’s new for this tour. STORY BY
Ruthie Fierberg When Disney’s animated film Beauty and the Beast landed on silver screens in 1991, it changed the cinematic paradigm. “[Executive producer and lyricist] Howard [Ashman] really conceived of it as a Broadway musical in animation,” said the movie’s screenwriter Linda Woolverton. “It was the first time it had ever been done. Little Mermaid did a little, but Beauty just blew out the form.” “We really made that statement that we were basically doing Broadway musicals,” Woolverton added. And in 1994, Disney mounted Beauty and the Beast in its inspirational form — opening as a full-fledged Broadway musical on the stage of the Palace Theatre. Woolverton penned the book for the stage adaptation, which was directed by Robert Jess Roth and choreographed by Matt West with a score of now iconic songs by Ashman, composer Alan Menken and lyricist Tim Rice. The Broadway musical’s opening marked another paradigm shift — this time a theatrical one. Beauty and the Beast was the first Broadway outing for Disney, the production that would usher in the establishment of Disney Theatrical Productions and the dozens of stage shows it has since created. Since Beauty first bowed in 1994, the musical has played in the West End, on tours throughout the U.S. and the U.K. and in productions around the globe. Now, just over 30 years since its premiere, Beauty and the Beast has been revitalized for a new tour. But don’t worry. It is still very much the Beauty and the Beast that won the hearts of millions of people. That said, transformation is in the show’s DNA. “One of the things that’s so lovely about Beauty and the Beast is that it’s a living, always growing piece of theatre,” said West, who took over direction of the show in 2021 and is the directorchoreographer of its latest tour. “We’re a team that loves [the show] so much that we continue to look at it, we continue to bring it into the contemporary world because it lends itself to that.”

Something there that wasn’t there before After all, when Beauty first leapt from animation to the stage, it underwent changes. “In animation, you can do anything. You say ‘cut to,’ but [on Broadway,] we had to move people across the stage,” Woolverton recalled. “We had to figure out the horse, Philippe,” West remembered. “That horse, in the animated film, came back to tell Belle that something was wrong. We had to figure out things like that. It took a long time.” The musical’s creative team also integrated new ideas about the castle’s servants — Lumière, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts and more — who had become enchanted objects. “We had this new conceit that they were gradually changing, which isn’t in the movie,” Woolverton explained. “In the show, they are gradually becoming more and more [inanimate]. So everybody’s got more stakes in Belle and the Beast coming together.” “Linda expanded the script from the animated film in so many ways,” West added. The musical’s score also expanded — salvaging songs that had been cut from the animated version, like “Human Again,” and adding new ones, like Belle’s solo “Home.” But the core of the beloved characters has always remained the same, particularly Belle. “Howard Ashman and I had decided we wanted to do a different kind of Disney heroine — not a princess, a heroine — who was a thinker, who wasn’t about what she looked like,” Woolverton recalled. “She was proactive. [She] had a vision and read a lot. I don’t think we ever really said it in words, but really we were trying to create a new iconic Disney heroine. I think we succeeded.” No change in heart Over the decades, Belle has only become a stronger, more insightful and more relatable character. In 1998, the Broadway musical’s team added the song “A Change in Me” — the heroine’s second-act power ballad. For this 2025 iteration, Belle wears reading glasses. “Those connective tissues to the audience are important, too,” West said. “Watching the first audiences come through, many of the young ones were in their Belle dresses. But so many of the young people were wearing glasses. I called Linda and said, ‘What if Belle wears glasses when she reads, to connect to these kids?’” The show itself has also evolved — from the script to the choreography to the design — in order to continue to feel contemporary. Woolverton wrote an entirely new scene for this production and has updated some of the language. “Terminology changed,” Woolverton said. “We don’t call the Beast ‘master’ anymore. We say ‘lordship.’ Just simple things like that that make it feel less stuck in the past.” “Disney is so great about coming to us and saying, ‘What would you like to do?’” West said. That willingness to innovate has led to entirely new choreography for this Beauty. “I’ve always wanted to see ‘Be Our Guest’ as a tap number,” West shared. “And so now, it’s got every flavor of dance in it. It’s got the tango, it’s got Big Band and it ends with a big swing tap number.” “We’ve been able to do that with all the numbers,” West revealed. “‘Human Again,’ the ‘Gaston’ pub number — the [mug] clinking is still in there, but in a whole other way. Even in the opening number of ‘Belle’ we’ve added things.” From a production and design standpoint, Beauty has also leveled up. Ann Hould-Ward has slightly revamped her Tony Award-winning costume design, integrating more luscious fabrics and textures and refining the silhouettes of characters. Natasha Katz has reinvigorated her Tony-nominated lighting design, leveraging today’s technology to sculpt with color and warmth for a more vibrant visual. Stanley Meyer combines analog and digital aspects to elevate the enchanted nature of his scenic design. The costumes, sets, lights, props and sound equipment travel in nine trucks to deliver this fresh spectacle in every city. “The show has grown up,” said West. “When you go to see Beauty and the Beast, you still have that warm, fuzzy feeling, because we are true to the characters. They may look a little different in textures and clothing, but we’re using all the opportunities to heighten the show and bring it to life in new ways.” Still, sometimes heightening the experience means trusting in what has always been there: a dazzling score, an iconic story, not to mention the original stagecraft of the Beast’s climactic transformation — all of which remains true to the original. As West said, “Some magic is so amazing, you don’t mess with it.” Beauty and the Beast is scheduled to come to Citizens Opera House starting April 14, 2026. After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902–1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895–1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in the American
musical theatre. Prior to his work with Hammerstein, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on a series of musical comedies that epitomized the wit and sophistication of Broadway in its heyday. Among their greatest successes were Pal Joey, On Your Toes, and Babes In Arms. Throughout the same era, Hammerstein brought new life to the operetta, culminating in the masterpiece Show Boat (music by Jerome Kern). Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers’s musical comedy style with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta. Oklahoma! was followed by Carousel, State Fair (film 1945, 1962; Broadway 1996), Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Cinderella (television 1957, 1965, 1997; Broadway 2013), Flower Drum Song, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tonys, Oscars, GRAMMYs, Emmys, Pulitzers, and Olivier Awards. HOWARD LINDSAY and RUSSEL CROUSE (Book). Lindsay and Crouse had one of the longest and most storied playwriting collaborations in theatrical history, lasting 32 years. Howard Lindsay was born in 1889 and died in 1968. He became an actor at 19 and went on to become a successful
encore Broadway playwright and director. Russel Crouse was born in 1893 and died in 1966. After serving in the Navy, he worked on New York newspapers, gaining his first renown through a signed column in the Post. In 1932 he became head of the publicity department for the Theatre Guild and in 1933 wrote his first Broadway show, collaborating with Corey Ford on the musical comedy Hold Your Horses. From 1934 on Crouse wrote only with Lindsay. Their hits include The Sound of Music (with a score by Rodgers & Hammerstein); Anything Goes and Red, Hot, and Blue (with scores by Cole Porter); Call Me Madam (score by Irving Berlin); the long-running play Life With Father (which originally starred Lindsay); the Pulitzer Prize-winning State of the Union; and The Great Sebastians, written for Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, the pre-eminent acting team of the day. Their producing credits included The Hasty Heart, Detective Story, and Arsenic and Old Lace. JACK O’BRIEN (Director) recently received a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award, and directed The Roommate on Broadway with Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone followed by a production of Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts (Lincoln Center Theatre) and the musical Shucked (The Regents Park, London). He directed his first Broadway production in 1969 and has collected three Tonys since then (Henry IV, Hairspray and The Coast of Utopia). He’s done operas (Il Trittico, Great Soctt, Porgy and Bess, etc.) musicals (The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Carousel, etc.), television (“American Playhouse,” “Great Performances,” etc.), ran the Old Globe Theatre for 25 years, written two books published by Farrar Straus & Giroux (Jack Be Nimble and Jack in the Box), and two night club performances at 54 Below. If he’s slowing down, he hasn’t noticed it yet. And check out Notes With Jack wherever you listen to podcasts. @noteswithjack_ MATT LENZ (Associate Director). ABOUT THE THEATER Welcome to New England’s premier performing arts theater, the Citizens Opera House. As you settle in to enjoy the show, take a few moments to appreciate the splendid design and craftsmanship surrounding you. The exceptional beauty of the theater is rooted in its equally exceptional history. The Citizens Opera House (originally known as the B. F. Keith Memorial Theatre) is one of the finest examples of the vaudeville circuit palace at the pinnacle of its development. Designed in a combination of French and Italian styles by Thomas White Lamb, one of the foremost theater architects of his day, it was erected under the close personal supervision of Edward Franklin Albee (1857–1930 and great-grandfather of the playwright of the same name) to memorialize his late partner, Benjamin Franklin Keith (1846–1914). Because it was constructed as a memorial and tribute to vaudeville’s greatest impresario, it was built with a degree of luxury in its appointments that is almost unrivalled. When the theater opened on October 29, 1928, the opening was attended by many theatrical luminaries, among them George M. Cohan and Al Jolson. Former Mayor James Michael Curley was also a guest of honor. The Radio-Keith-Orpheum organization which by that time owned the theater was represented by the host of that great occasion, R. K. O. Board Chairman Joseph P. Kennedy. The theater presented vaudeville for only a year before featuring first-run films for the ensuing decades. In 1965 Sack Theatres purchased the B. F. Keith Memorial Theatre from R. K. O. The new owners refurbished the building, making great efforts to restore its opulent beauty, and renamed it the Savoy Theatre. In 1978 the theater was bought by the Opera Company of Boston. The name of the theater was then changed from Savoy to the Boston Opera House. Under the direction of the renowned opera impresario Sarah Caldwell, the Boston Opera
House hosted some of the most acclaimed stagings of opera performances in the modern era. Unfortunately, the costs of maintaining the theater outstripped the ability of the Company to keep up. As tax and utility bills went unpaid, the theater began to suffer deterioration. The Company closed the theater in 1991 and the deterioration accelerated at a sad and alarming rate. In 1995, the Boston Opera House was placed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 11 Most Endangered Buildings list. Under the subsequent ownership of Clear Channel Communications, and with the assistance of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, the necessary building permits were issued in late 2002 and work to completely renovate and restore the Citizens Opera House commenced. In order to accommodate the needs of large Broadway touring productions, the old stagehouse and attached dressing rooms were completely demolished to make way for a larger, state-of-the-art stagehouse and new dressing rooms. Meanwhile, everything between the proscenium wall of the stage and the Washington Street facade was carefully restored. A rare assembly of old-world craftsmanship and highlyskilled trades went to work restoring sculptural plaster, gold leaf finishes, Carrara marble, paintings and tapestries, grand staircases, chandeliers, walnut and oak paneling. The total cost of the restoration exceeded $50 million. In September 2009, the Citizens Opera House officially entered yet another phase in its storied history. Local businessmen Don Law and David Mugar joined forces to purchase the Citizens Opera House from Live Nation, returning the theater to local ownership for the first time in decades. The same month, Boston Ballet launched its first full season with the Citizens Opera House as its new home, and Broadway In Boston continues to present the best of touring Broadway on this storied stage.
