MATTHEW LÓPEZ & AMBER RUFFIN ON REMOVING THE 20TH CENTURY LENS OF SOME LIKE IT HOT

The musical Some Like It Hot, based on the 1959 Hollywood classic, has arrived. With direction and choreography by Casey Nicholaw and a score by Tony-winning songwriting duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, Some Like It Hot features an updated book by Tony-winning scribe Matthew López and comedian Amber Ruffin. The two writers flipped the script and turned the classic comedy on its head for today’s audiences. López and Ruffin sat down with Broadway.com Editor-in-Chief Paul Wontorek to talk about removing the 20th century lens from the story, writing in an authentic way and more. Unlike most writing teams, López and Ruffin didn’t have a working relationship before joining the production. “We shared a desire to make the show that we made,” López said. “You never want to talk about starting a project from the negative, but when you’re making Some Like It Hot for a 21st century audience you inevitably go to ‘it’s not going to be this and it’s not going to be that.’ Once we had cleared all the things that it wasn’t going to be, we looked at what it could be.”

This marks a musical theater debut for Ruffin, who is known for The Amber Ruffin Show and writing for “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” “I said yes to Some Like it Hot for two reasons,” she said. “One, the team is outstanding. You’ve got Marc and Scott and Casey and Matthew. I did want to work with them because that’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. I also said yes to this show because the lead is a Black lady and that’s it. Getting to write for a Black woman on Broadway? I want to do that.”

In Some Like It Hot, friends Joe and Jerry are on the run from gangsters and disguise themselves as women while befriending singer Sugar. In this stage adaptation, the audience sees Jerry go through self-realization and acceptance. “Our ideas of what a period piece are formed by the period in which that art was made in which there are so many restrictions,” López said. “It isn’t as if queer people just magically sprung up from the ground in 1969. They were there all along. They just didn’t make movies about them. They didn’t write novels about them. We were not gone. We were just not talked about. The idea of a 21st century lens on this story is a bit of a misnomer. It’s really removing the 20th century lens from it. If you remove the 20th century lens from the story, it automatically works today. And all we needed to do was just clean that lens.”

Staging another illustrious season, Broadway in Boston continues to bring the best of Broadway to greater Boston’s diverse citizens and communities. And Citizens couldn’t be more grateful or proud to support this valuable mission. Here’s to many more seasons of music, wonder, love and laughter! Citizens

INTERPRETING THE DETAILS

BEHIND THE GREAT GATSBY’S

TONY AWARD-WINNING COSTUME DESIGN

Two-time Tony winner Linda Cho describes the creation of the lavish 1920s clothing for the musical adaptation of the beloved novel.

In adapting F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby for the stage, book writer Kait Kerrigan, composer Jason Howland and lyricist Nathan Tysen needed to conjure the world millions of readers have imagined and fallen in love with for the past century. The Great Gatsby is set in the Roaring ’20s Jazz Age on a fictionalized cove of Long Island. Costume designer Linda Cho, alongside associate designer Patrick Bevilacqua, needed the costumes to match the extravagance of the era and the dreams of its fans. Here, Cho discusses her vision for the Tony Award-winning wardrobe of the musical.

ON HER FULL-SCALE INSPIRATION:

Linda Cho: The directive that I was given was: Let’s design the Great Gatsby of everyone’s imagination. The Great Gatsby conjures up visions of unchecked extravagance, glittering decadence, carefree flappers and longing beyond reason. I wanted to transport the audience into this 1920s world through the lens of our contemporary eyes. This means pushing these ideas even further than what might have been realistic — and blending modern and period silhouettes and sensibilities.

DAISY BUCHANAN

Cho: I wanted Daisy to look like she owns the space, to “the manner born” so to speak. The gauzy white curtains of the palatial room she occupies are echoed into her breezy handkerchief hems and waterfall shoulder drape. I wanted her look to evoke lazy summer, a dress to lay about in, drink champagne and nothing else.

JAY GATSBY

Cho: I have to credit [author F. Scott] Fitzgerald for [this color]. In the book, Tom makes a point of sneering at Gatsby’s pink suit. Also on a visual level I liked the romantic palette of soft pink alongside Daisy’s robin’s egg blue-colored chiffon dress in this scene where they finally come together after years of separation. Our narrator Nick’s suits are meant to evoke an older period with coarser fabrics and more practical details for a working man. In contrast, Tom and Jay would have bespoke tailors with classic lines — with Jay making bolder color (pink) and fabric (glossier) choices.

GILDA GRAY

Cho: I wanted a dramatic silhouette that harkens back to a slightly earlier era and the Poiret evening coats of World War I since Gatsby is trying to re-create the past when he first meets Daisy. For the headdress, I was inspired by Paul Tate DePoo’s set image of the Art Deco arches in the background.

ABOUT THE THEATER

Welcome to New England’s premier performing arts theater, the Citizens Opera House. As you settle in to enjoy the show, take a few moments to appreciate the splendid design and craftsmanship surrounding you. The exceptional beauty of the theater is rooted in its equally exceptional history. The Citizens Opera House (originally known as the B. F. Keith Memorial Theatre) is one of the finest examples of the vaudeville circuit palace at the pinnacle of its development. Designed in a combination of French and Italian styles by Thomas White Lamb, one of the foremost theater architects of his day, it was erected under the close personal supervision of Edward Franklin Albee (1857–1930 and great-grandfather of the playwright of the same name) to memorialize his late partner, Benjamin Franklin Keith (1846–1914). Because it was constructed as a memorial and tribute to vaudeville’s greatest impresario, it was built with a degree of luxury in its appointments that is almost unrivalled.

When the theater opened on October 29, 1928, the opening was attended by many theatrical luminaries, among them George M. Cohan and Al Jolson. Former Mayor James Michael Curley was also a guest of honor. The Radio-Keith-Orpheum organization which by that time owned the theater was represented by the host of that great occasion, R. K. O. Board Chairman Joseph P. Kennedy. The theater presented vaudeville for only a year before featuring first-run films for the ensuing decades. In 1965 Sack Theatres purchased the B. F. Keith Memorial Theatre from R. K. O. The new owners refurbished the building, making great efforts to restore its opulent beauty, and renamed it the Savoy Theatre. In 1978 the theater was bought by the Opera Company of Boston. The name of the theater was then changed from Savoy to the Boston Opera House.

Under the direction of the renowned opera impresario Sarah Caldwell, the Boston Opera

House hosted some of the most acclaimed stagings of opera performances in the modern era. Unfortunately, the costs of maintaining the theater outstripped the ability of the Company to keep up. As tax and utility bills went unpaid, the theater began to suffer deterioration. The Company closed the theater in 1991 and the deterioration accelerated at a sad and alarming rate. In 1995, the Boston Opera House was placed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 11 Most Endangered Buildings list.

Under the subsequent ownership of Clear Channel Communications, and with the assistance of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, the necessary building permits were issued in late 2002 and work to completely renovate and restore the Citizens Opera House commenced. In order to accommodate the needs of large Broadway touring productions, the old stagehouse and attached dressing rooms were completely demolished to make way for a larger, state-of-the-art stagehouse and new dressing rooms. Meanwhile, everything between the proscenium wall of the stage and the Washington Street facade was carefully restored. A rare assembly of old-world craftsmanship and highlyskilled trades went to work restoring sculptural plaster, gold leaf finishes, Carrara marble, paintings and tapestries, grand staircases, chandeliers, walnut and oak paneling. The total cost of the restoration exceeded $50 million.

In September 2009, the Citizens Opera House officially entered yet another phase in its storied history. Local businessmen Don Law and David Mugar joined forces to purchase the Citizens Opera House from Live Nation, returning the theater to local ownership for the first time in decades. The same month, Boston Ballet launched its first full season with the Citizens Opera House as its new home, and Broadway In Boston continues to present the best of touring Broadway on this storied stage.
