GOING HOME AGAIN: LINDA WOOLVERTON AND MATT WEST ON THE NEW BEAUTY AND THE BEAST TOUR

What does it feel like to return to the world of Beauty and the Beast? For book writer Linda Woolverton and director and choreographer Matt West, who created the original choreography for the Broadway production, it feels deeply personal. “Going home,” West said.
“I was going to say the same thing,” added Woolverton. “It feels like going home. We’re family. We’ve been with this show for so long and it’s been a joy every time. And so to come back and reimagine it and rethink it to the degree we’re doing it is such a joy.”
More than 30 years after the animated film premiered and nearly 25 since the last Disney-produced national tour, Beauty and the Beast is hitting the road again in a bold new production. The show helped shape a generation of theatergoers, many of whom are now performing in this reimagined version. “It feels a little surreal,” West said. “I have to pinch myself every once in a while to really think about where we all started, starting from the movie, actually creating the movie, to where we are today. It’s kind of mind-boggling.”
Both creatives approached the production with a willingness to examine every part of the production. “I wanted to look at every aspect of it,” West said. “The lighting, the design, the costume design, the scenic design and the dances. We wrote some new scenes for this production. Textures have changed. The lighting is new at your fingertips, so we’ve done it all.”
That includes big changes in choreography. “All the dances are new,” West said. “‘Be Our Guest’ is now a big tap number, which I’ve always wanted to do, so I’ve put it in. David Chase did the new dance arrangements and the tavern number is bigger. They’re all bigger. It’s bigger and brighter and bolder and better than ever.” Woolverton, who also wrote the screenplay for the animated film, found herself returning to familiar material. “We really worked hard on making the show not feel like it was stuck in the past,” she said. “Over the 30 years we’ve been evolving. Constantly moving and changing. I’ve rewritten so many scenes so many times. Things have come in and gone out, come back in again. I was writing a new scene four weeks ago and I couldn’t believe it. It was like I’m writing the scene again.” “And it works,” West said. “It works,” Woolverton replied. “And it’s because they were my friends. So it was like playing with my old friends.”
At the heart of the story is Belle. “You know, Howard Ashman and I really wanted to conjure up a new kind of Disney heroine that wasn’t a princess but was a heroine who took action in the world and was a thinker and a reader,” Woolverton said. “That was really foremost on my mind when I was writing this character for the first time.”
That spirit continues to shape the way Woolverton views the show in 2025. “The story is a contemporary story,” she said. “The heroine is a contemporary girl, so it lends itself to being updated as we go along and learn new things and grow ourselves and put that into the show.”
For many of the cast members, this production represents a full-circle moment. “Many in our cast have shown me pictures of them at the Palace Theatre on Broadway when they were five and six,” said West. “And now here they are doing it with us. It’s surreal. It’s a joy and it’s the gift that keeps on giving.”
The show’s central message continues to resonate. “You know this show points out that love is love is love is love, right?” West said. “Love is love. And these two unlikely people come together and forgive and understand and grow together and end up together. It’s a good story to tell people and it’s a good process to look at.” Woolverton added, “Really important for me is that you can come back from a mistake. He made a terrible mistake when he was young and suffered a lot, and everyone in the castle suffers for it. But you can come back through love. It’s the redemptive power of love that I think really touches people about this story.”
And of course, the music remains a centerpiece. “I think everybody relates to these characters in some way,” West said. “And the songs by Alan Menken with lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice. The songs are well known. You hum along with them. You walk out feeling good. And I think it’s a family show. It’s a date night show. It’s for everyone and I’m very proud of that.”
When asked who they hope will see this new production, their answer was simple. “People from four to 104,” said West. “Everyone can be your guest,” Woolverton added.

LES MISÉRABLES PUTS 19TH-CENTURY FRENCH HISTORY ONSTAGE
Take a closer look at the true revolution behind the renowned musical.

The story of Les Misérables spans 17 years of history — just one year longer than the run of the original 1987 Broadway production. Based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel, the musical opens in 1815 France, exploring ideas of justice and redemption based around the fictional Jean Valjean’s life post-imprisonment. Les Mis culminates in 1832 with a revolution — but which revolution?
The revolution depicted in Les Mis was the June Rebellion (June 5 and 6, 1832), a republicanled attempt to dismantle the July Monarchy, the name for the government established in 1830 by King Louis Philippe I. The July Monarchy was led by extremely wealthy members of the bourgeoisie, and its reign was marked by economic downturn, food shortages and disease. An outbreak of cholera struck Paris in 1832, claiming the lives of over 18,000 citizens and hitting poor communities the hardest.
One notable victim was Jean Maximilien Lamarque, a member of French Parliament and an outspoken critic of the monarchy. A veteran of the French Revolution (1789-1799), Lamarque was well-liked among the lower class for his public calling out of the Monarchy’s disregard for human rights. Riots followed Lamarque’s death on June 1, 1832; the outrage turned to rebellion, resulting in approximately 800 deaths from June 5 to June 6. Hugo’s fictionalized version focuses on a group of student organizers, led by the character Enjolras, who rise up against a corrupt government. Enjolras is loosely based on Charles Jeanne, one of the leaders of the June Rebellion. Like Enjolras, Jeanne took charge of the barricade, fighting for a more just society. Jeanne survived the rebellion, only to die five years later in 1837 from tuberculosis. In the musical, however, Enjolras dies on the barricade while raising a red flag. A longstanding representation of popular revolt, the use of a red flag in times of political turmoil dates back to medieval Europe.
The image of waving a ravaged red flag atop a barricade has become a visual synonym for the musical. The flag was an especially popular symbol of patriotism during the French Revolution of the late 1700s, the possible source for the frequent conflation of the time period of Les Mis.
While Les Mis is a great work of historical fiction, author Hugo lived it. Born in 1802, Hugo was 30 years old during the June Rebellion and had an additional 30 years of reflection to pull from when he wrote the original novel in 1862. He died in 1885, a witness to nearly a century of French history.

WHO’S WHO in the CAST
ANGELA LANSBURY (Voice of the Prologue Narrator) enjoyed a career spanning almost 75 years in film, stage and television. Her numerous Broadway credits include Mame (Tony Award®), Dear World (Tony Award®), Gypsy (Tony Award®), Sweeney Todd (Tony Award®) and Blithe Spirit (Tony Award®). She appeared in over 60 motion pictures including Gaslight (Academy Award® Nomination), The Portrait of Dorian Gray (Academy Award® Nomination) and The Manchurian Candidate (Academy Award® Nomination). In 1991 she was the voice of Mrs. Potts in Disney’s animated feature, Beauty and the Beast. She made television history starring as Jessica Fletcher on “Murder, She Wrote,” the longest-running detective drama series in TV history, winning four of her six Golden Globe® Awards. In 2013 she was awarded an Oscar® for Lifetime Achievement in Motion Pictures. She was named a Dame of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. Lansbury passed away peacefully in 2022 at age 96.

LINDA WOOLVERTON (Book). Linda Woolverton’s first animated feature, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991) won the Golden Globe for the Best Comedy/Musical and became the first animated film to be nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award®. Woolverton cowrote the screenplay for The Lion King animated feature, rewrote the script for Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey and contributed to the animated feature Mulan She went on to adapt the script of Beauty and the Beast for the Broadway stage and received the Tony Award® nomination for Best Book of a Musical in 1994. Woolverton was also awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for Beauty and the Beast for Best New Musical in the UK. Beauty and the Beast ran in New York between 1994 and 2007, becoming the sixth longest running show in Broadway history. Woolverton also wrote the book for Elton John and Tim Rice’s Musical Aida which ran for five years at the Palace. Woolverton’s script for Alice in Wonderland (2010), directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, grossed over one billion dollars and she became the first female screenwriter with a sole credit on a billion-dollar film. From there she wrote the screenplay for Disney’s Maleficent (2014) starring Angelina Jolie which became a worldwide success. She is currently creating a television series, producing an animated series and adapting a fantasy novel for film.

HOWARD ASHMAN (Lyricist) is best known as the pivotal creative mind behind The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast (which is dedicated to “Our friend, Howard Ashman, who gave a Mermaid her voice and a Beast his soul…”). Ashman’s first love was theatre. He was a founder of Off-Off-Broadway’s renowned WPA Theatre, where he conceived, wrote and directed the classic musical Little Shop of Horrors as well as God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater (both music by Alan Menken). A new cast recording of Rosewater is available from Sh-K-Boom records. In 1986, Ashman wrote and directed the Broadway musical Smile (music by Marvin Hamlisch). Lamented as a lost treasure of the 1980’s theatre scene, Smile remains popular on high school and college campuses. A documentary about Ashman’s life titled HOWARD has received great acclaim for its sensitive portrayal of the man and the artist. Howard Ashman died in 1991 from complications of AIDS. ROB ROTH (Production Conception) was nominated for a Tony Award® as Best Director for his Broadway debut, Beauty and the Beast, which has become one of the top ten longestrunning musicals in Broadway history. Rob went on to direct the world premiere of Elaborate Lives: The Legend of Aida, collaborating with Sir Elton John and Sir Tim Rice. Rob directed the Broadway musical Lestat, based on the Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles with a score by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. ABOUT THE THEATER
Welcome to New England’s premier performing arts theater, the Citizens Opera House. As you settle in to enjoy the show, take a few moments to appreciate the splendid design and craftsmanship surrounding you. The exceptional beauty of the theater is rooted in its equally exceptional history. The Citizens Opera House (originally known as the B. F. Keith Memorial Theatre) is one of the finest examples of the vaudeville circuit palace at the pinnacle of its development. Designed in a combination of French and Italian styles by Thomas White Lamb, one of the foremost theater architects of his day, it was erected under the close personal supervision of Edward Franklin Albee (1857–1930 and great-grandfather of the playwright of the same name) to memorialize his late partner, Benjamin Franklin Keith (1846–1914). Because it was constructed as a memorial and tribute to vaudeville’s greatest impresario, it was built with a degree of luxury in its appointments that is almost unrivalled.
When the theater opened on October 29, 1928, the opening was attended by many theatrical luminaries, among them George M. Cohan and Al Jolson. Former Mayor James Michael Curley was also a guest of honor. The Radio-Keith-Orpheum organization which by that time owned the theater was represented by the host of that great occasion, R. K. O. Board Chairman Joseph P. Kennedy.
The theater presented vaudeville for only a year before featuring first-run films for the ensuing decades. In 1965 Sack Theatres purchased the B. F. Keith Memorial Theatre from R. K. O. The new owners refurbished the building, making great efforts to restore its opulent beauty, and renamed it the Savoy Theatre. In 1978 the theater was bought by the Opera Company of Boston. The name of the theater was then changed from Savoy to the Boston Opera House.
Under the direction of the renowned opera impresario Sarah Caldwell, the Boston Opera
House hosted some of the most acclaimed stagings of opera performances in the modern era. Unfortunately, the costs of maintaining the theater outstripped the ability of the Company to keep up. As tax and utility bills went unpaid, the theater began to suffer deterioration. The Company closed the theater in 1991 and the deterioration accelerated at a sad and alarming rate. In 1995, the Boston Opera House was placed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 11 Most Endangered Buildings list.
Under the subsequent ownership of Clear Channel Communications, and with the assistance of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, the necessary building permits were issued in late 2002 and work to completely renovate and restore the Citizens Opera House commenced. In order to accommodate the needs of large Broadway touring productions, the old stagehouse and attached dressing rooms were completely demolished to make way for a larger, state-of-the-art stagehouse and new dressing rooms. Meanwhile, everything between the proscenium wall of the stage and the Washington Street facade was carefully restored. A rare assembly of old-world craftsmanship and highlyskilled trades went to work restoring sculptural plaster, gold leaf finishes, Carrara marble, paintings and tapestries, grand staircases, chandeliers, walnut and oak paneling. The total cost of the restoration exceeded $50 million.
In September 2009, the Citizens Opera House officially entered yet another phase in its storied history. Local businessmen Don Law and David Mugar joined forces to purchase the Citizens Opera House from Live Nation, returning the theater to local ownership for the first time in decades. The same month, Boston Ballet launched its first full season with the Citizens Opera House as its new home, and Broadway In Boston continues to present the best of touring Broadway on this storied stage.
