HIPPODROME THEATRE THE FRANCE-MERRICK PERFORMING ARTS CENTER A JOHN GORE ORGANIZATION VENUE

FEBRUARY 2026

Back to the Future: The Musical

It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you to Back to the Future: The Musical in the historic Hippodrome Theatre at the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center.

Few movies have stood the test of time like Back to the Future, holding nostalgia for the 80s generations, and creating new fans of later generations. And few musicals are able to capture the “movie-magic” and bring it to the stage like this musical.

Much like the chandelier from The Phantom of the Opera, Pride Rock from The Lion King, or the helicopter from Miss Saigon, some set pieces become characters of their own and stretch the imagination of the audience member, challenging what is possible in a theatrical setting. The DeLorean Time Machine is one of those. We are giddy with excitement to introduce this piece of magic to you. And we hope you are as awed by it as I am.

We’re also beyond excited about our recently announced 2026–2027 season, which is packed with spectacular productions that promise to delight and inspire. The extraordinary lineup includes two new national tour launches, another re-launch of a national tour, five Baltimore premieres, and the return of some audience favorites.

Current Subscribers have already been shouting their approval on social media. And if you are not yet a Subscriber, we hope that you will join us as a new Subscriber next season. New subscriptions for this exciting season will go on sale Tuesday, March 10, but you can sign up for the Priority Waitlist now and get access to those new subscriptions before the general public. We can’t wait to welcome both new and returning patrons as part of our theater family. Find out more by visiting our website, BaltimoreHippodrome.com.

Thank you for joining us for this performance. Enjoy the show, and we look forward to welcoming you back for another incredible season of live theatre!

Warm regards,

COMPOSER ALAN SILVESTRI’S

MUSIC POWERS BACK TO THE FUTURE’S STAGE TRANSFORMATION

Alan Silvestri, the well-known composer behind some of Hollywood’s most recognizable scores, has brought his musical talents to the stage with Back to the Future: The Musical. The stage adaptation of the 1985 sci-fi adventure film has engaged audiences in both London’s West End and Broadway, with a touring production now making its way across the United States.

With over 100 film credits to his name, Silvestri has built a career defined by creating memorable scores that deepen narrative impact. His long-standing collaboration with film director Robert Zemeckis has produced memorable music for movies like Forrest Gump, The Polar Express and the Back to the Future trilogy. Silvestri’s work has earned him two Oscar nominations, two Golden Globe nominations, four Grammy Awards and two Emmy Awards. He has also composed standout scores for films across genres, from action blockbusters like Predator, The Abyss and The Avengers, to family features like The Croods and Lilo & Stitch

Silvestri’s partnership with Grammy-winning songwriter Glen Ballard has resulted in well-known songs such as “Believe” from The Polar Express and “Butterfly Fly Away” from Hannah Montana: The Movie. This collaboration has also played a vital role in the development of Back to the Future: The Musical

Adapting the Back to the Future film for the stage was a substantial undertaking. Silvestri and Ballard worked closely to translate the film’s high-energy adventure and heartfelt moments into a theatrical

experience. The musical’s book was written by Bob Gale, who cowrote the original film’s screenplay, ensuring continuity with the movie’s story and characters. The stage production was directed by Tony-winning director John Rando, whose experience in musical theater contributed to the show’s dynamic presentation. The musical first premiered in Manchester, England, in 2020 before moving to London’s West End in 2021. It made its Broadway debut at the Winter Garden Theatre in 2023 and is currently on a North American tour.

The musical retains the original film’s most recognizable songs, such as “The Power of Love,” written by Huey Lewis and the News, and “Johnny B. Goode,” written by Chuck Berry, while incorporating original music composed by Silvestri and Ballard. These new songs expand on key character moments, increasing the emotional depth of the production. Songs like “It’s Only a Matter of Time” and “For the Dreamers” showcase Silvestri’s talent for memorable melodies and broad orchestral arrangements.

In developing the new material, Silvestri and Ballard worked closely with the creative team to ensure the music supported the show’s time-traveling narrative. Each song was designed to connect with the characters’ emotional journeys, blending rock ‘n’ roll energy with heartfelt ballads. Thus, the musical’s score paid tribute to the film’s familiar sound while introducing new life to the story on stage.

Reflecting on the transition from composing for film to writing for the stage, Silvestri remarked to Broadway.com that “the interesting thing is, it’s not as much of a difference as you might think because in the end, it’s all about storytelling. It’s all about music assisting the telling of a story. And from that point of view, it’s identical. The lovely thing about the theater as opposed to the film world is, you’ve gotta go, go, go to get the film ready, and you record it, and then it’s out there forever. Whereas [the cast] creates this show every night with the magnificent musicians. So, there’s an interesting aspect to theater that doesn’t exist in cinema. But the storytelling is identical.”

Incorporating signature moments from the film posed a creative challenge. The production employs striking visual effects to recreate pivotal scenes such as the DeLorean’s time-travel sequences with the iconic car’s onstage appearance capturing the original film’s thrilling energy. Additionally, clever stagecraft enables Marty McFly’s guitar performance of “Johnny B. Goode” to echo the memorable movie scene while adding fresh choreography to engage the audience.

Silvestri’s new compositions complement the show’s nostalgic elements, blending fresh material with established musical motifs from the original film’s score. For example, orchestral variations on the memorable Back to the Future theme appear throughout the musical, reinforcing key dramatic moments.

The show’s design team worked to balance visual spectacle with musical depth. Lighting effects, dynamic projections and seamless scene transitions ensure the production captures the fast-paced energy of the original film. The score’s blend of rock, pop and traditional theatrical elements reflects both the 1980s aesthetic and the timeless themes of family, friendship and second chances.

Silvestri’s contribution to Back to the Future: The Musical highlights his adaptability as a composer. His ability to craft emotionally resonant and varied scores has played a key role in bringing this timeless story to life on stage. The musical continues to introduce new generations to the story’s enduring themes while celebrating the legacy of the original film.

The uplifting and the illuminating, performed daily.
