BLESSED WITH A VOICE: CHRISTIANE NOLL’S DIVINE TAKE ON MOTHER ABBESS

Christiane Noll has spent nearly three decades bringing warmth, intelligence and vocal power to Broadway stages and touring houses across the country. A Tony Award nominee with a career that stretches from sweeping epics to intimate cabarets, she remains, at heart, an artist driven by curiosity and a willingness to say yes when the right role calls.

After training at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama, Noll made her Broadway debut in Jekyll & Hyde, originating the role of Emma Carew in 1997. The performance immediately established her as a leading lady with a rich, expressive soprano and a grounded emotional presence. From there, she built a résumé that includes Broadway productions such as Ragtime, Chaplin and Dear Evan Hansen, along with national tours of Miss Saigon, Urinetown, City of Angels and Grease

ON THE ROAD

These days, she’s once again on the road, this time in a role that carries a particular kind of legacy. For the past year, Noll has been touring as Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music, a character she describes as “iconic” and one that gave her pause in the best possible way.

“I’ve done the show a few times before,” she said, explaining she previously lent her voice to Maria in a Salzburg Marionette Theatre production and appeared as Sister Margaretta in the live NBC broadcast, starring Carrie Underwood. But stepping into the Abbess’ habit was something different.

“When the phone call came in, I gave it pause,” she said. “You don’t necessarily know what your next opportunities are going to be and Mother Abbess is one of those characters. The songs are extraordinary. The show is enduring.”

Ultimately, it was a family decision. Noll, whose husband is also an actor, had been considering staying home more consistently with their daughter. But the opportunity to reinterpret a role so steeped in history and to put her own distinctive stamp on it was too compelling to pass up.

“The notion of being able to tackle her and put my spin on it—that was very exciting,” Noll said.

INTERGENERATIONAL MAGIC

Part of what makes The Sound of Music special, she noted, is its intergenerational magic. While young audience members may be dazzled by the children on stage, Noll sees the bigger picture from her vantage point.

“It’s a first experience for so many,” she said. “Some of them are becoming theater lovers for the rest of their lives. It’s the first time they think, ‘I could do that.’”

Behind them stand parents and grandparents who once had that same spark. For Noll, the show’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to evolve with its audience.

“You can find a different character that resonates with you throughout your lifetime,” she said. “It’s like going back to Disney World; you want to relive it and share it.”

Theatre, in fact, has always been woven into her life. Noll grew up in an operatic household; both her parents were opera singers, and she traveled frequently as a child. Broadway cast albums were part of the soundtrack of her youth. But it wasn’t until she saw the 1989 musical City of Angels during a winter break in college that something clicked.

“It was the first time my jaw dropped,” she said. “I thought, ‘I want to do this show.’”

THEY DO WONDERS

Within a year, she had joined the national tour—a full-circle moment that helped launch the touring-heavy early years of her career.

In her 20s, she explored every city, tried every restaurant she could, and packed her schedule with activities. Now, at 57, she approaches touring differently. There is more rest, more reflection and the simple satisfaction of buying groceries at the start of the week and using all of them.

“I travel with a frying pan and I love that part of it,” she said. “This tour has been a delight. It’s a beautiful group to be part of.”

Over the years, Noll has also forged strong ties to regional theatres and speaks passionately about the importance of the arts in communities beyond New York.

“The arts can enrich everyone,” she said. “I hope theatres continue to thrive, because they do wonders for everybody.”

Reflecting on her career on stage, Noll sounds almost surprised at the breadth of what she’s accomplished.

“Now I look back and think, ‘Oh, I’ve had a career. Look at this!’” she said.

And as she stands center stage each night, singing one of the most beloved songs in musical theatre canon—“Climb Ev’ry Mountain”—Noll continues to find new notes in a classic role, and in her own remarkable journey.

RICHARD RODGERS and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II (Music and Lyrics). After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902–1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895–1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in the American musical theater. Prior to his work with Hammerstein, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on a series of musical comedies that epitomized the wit and sophistication of Broadway in its heyday. Among their greatest successes were Pal Joey, On Your Toes, and Babes In Arms. Throughout the same era, Hammerstein brought new life to the operetta, culminating in the masterpiece Show Boat (music by Jerome Kern). Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers’s musical comedy style with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta. Oklahoma! was followed by Carousel, State Fair (film 1945, 1962; Broadway 1996), Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Cinderella (television 1957, 1965, 1997; Broadway 2013), Flower Drum Song, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tonys, Oscars, GRAMMYs, Emmys, Pulitzers, and Olivier Awards.

HOWARD LINDSAY and RUSSEL CROUSE (Book). Lindsay and Crouse had one of the longest and most storied playwriting collaborations in theatrical history, lasting 32 years. Howard Lindsay was born in 1889 and died in 1968. He became an actor at 19 and went on to become a successful Broadway playwright and director. Russel Crouse was born in 1893 and died in 1966. After serving in the Navy, he worked on New York

newspapers, gaining his first renown through a signed column in the Post. In 1932 he became head of the publicity department for the Theatre Guild and in 1933 wrote his first Broadway show, collaborating with Corey Ford on the musical comedy Hold Your Horses. From 1934 on Crouse wrote only with Lindsay. Their hits include The Sound of Music (with a score by Rodgers & Hammerstein); Anything Goes and Red, Hot, and Blue (with scores by Cole Porter); Call Me Madam (score by Irving Berlin); the longrunning play Life With Father (which originally starred Lindsay); the Pulitzer Prize-winning State of the Union; and The Great Sebastians, written for Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, the pre-eminent acting team of the day. Their producing credits included The Hasty Heart, Detective Story, and Arsenic and Old Lace

JACK O’BRIEN (Director) recently received a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award, and directed The Roommate on Broadway with Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone followed by a production of Ibsen’s Ghosts (Lincoln Center Theatre) and the musical Shucked (The Regents Park, London). He directed his first Broadway production in 1969 and has collected three Tonys since then (Henry IV, Hairspray and The Coast of Utopia). He’s done operas (Il Trittico, Great Soctt, Porgy and Bess, etc.) musicals (The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Carousel, etc.), television (“American Playhouse,” “Great Performances,” etc.), ran the Old Globe Theatre for 25 years, written two books published by Farrar Straus & Giroux (Jack Be Nimble and Jack in the Box), and two night club performances at 54 Below. She has designed over 125 Broadway productions since Ballad of the Sad Café in 1963. ROBERT RUSSELL BENNETT (Orchestrations). In a career spanning more than five decades, Robert Russell Bennett (1894–1981) arranged more than 300 Broadway musical scores. In musical comedy’s golden era of the 1920s, he orchestrated up to 22 shows a season. Among his credits were Show Boat; Roberta; Sunny; Rose-Marie; No, No, Nanette; Girl Crazy; Of Thee I Sing; Face The Music; Carmen Jones; Finian’s Rainbow; Kiss Me, Kate; My Fair Lady and Camelot. He orchestrated seven of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musicals including Oklahoma!, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music. His arrangements for the 1955 film version of Oklahoma! earned him an Academy Award. He also orchestrated and arranged Rodgers’s 13-hour television documentary score for Victory At Sea. A classically trained composer, Bennett’s prolific output of original compositions includes symphonies, sonatas, a ballet, a concerto and an opera. He is the posthumous recipient of a 2008 Special Tony Award in recognition of his historic contribution to American musical theater.

4 Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theater is never allowed. It distracts those around you and endangers the performers.

THE THEATER

A fully restored 1929 “movie palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,665 seats, is a multipurpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballets, comedies, concerts, movies and private corporate events.

PRIVATE EVENTS

The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, accommodating 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. TICKET OFFICE HOURS

Ticket Office hours are Friday 10:00 AM-5:00 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM-3:00 PM. The ticket office will open approximately 3 hours before doors on show days. Doors to the Fox Theatre open one hour before showtime. Tickets for all performances may be purchased online at www.foxtheatre.org, or by calling 855-285-8499, or visiting the Fox Theatre Ticket Office during the times listed above.

GROUP SALES

In accordance with the Fulton County Clean Air Ordinance, the Fox Theatre is a smoke-free facility. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas.

ABOUT ACCESSIBILITY

ELEVATORS

Elevators are at the north end of each lobby and are available during all performances. They make it possible to access each lobby without using the stairs. Patrons should be aware that access to upper seating areas do involve stairs.

PARKING

Parking is available within a four-block radius in all directions of the Fox Theatre. Advanced reserved parking is available for sale at the Fox Ticket Office or by calling 855-285-8499. The Fox Theatre assumes no responsibility for vehicles parked in any of the privately owned lots operating in the Fox Theatre district.

PERFORMANCE NOTES

All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket to be admitted to the theater. Not all events are suitable for children. Infants will not be admitted to adult programs/ performances. Parents will be asked to remove children who create a disturbance.

• Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of management in conjunction with the wishes of the producers.

• Please turn off all pagers and cellphones before each performance.

• Camera and recording devices are strictly prohibited. Backstage employees are represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E.)

MARQUEE CLUB PRESENTED BY LEXUS

A stunning 10,000 square feet of exclusive space located on the northeast side of the theatre, the Marquee Club has access to the fabulous rooftop terrace overlooking the iconic Fox marquee and Peachtree Street. The Marquee Club is the perfect way to elevate your experience at the Fox. The club can be accessed through one of the annual membership options or on a per-event basis, as space allows. FOX FUN FACTS

EVERY VENUE HAS TRADITIONS. FEW HAVE A MANTRA.

“Play It Pretty for Atlanta” is a phrase that lives quietly behind the scenes at the Fox Theatre and carries enormous weight for those who pass beneath it. Its origin traces back to a legendary moment in Fox history. In 1976, while recording the album One More from the Road live at the Fox Theatre, Lynyrd Skynyrd frontman Ronnie Van Zant turned to his band onstage during “Free Bird” and said, “play it pretty for Atlanta.” The words weren’t scripted, but they landed. That performance would become iconic, and the band later directed proceeds from their Fox performances to support the Save the Fox campaign, helping ensure the theatre’s survival.

Over time, “Play It Pretty for Atlanta” evolved into a quiet ritual. At its core, the phrase is rooted in respect. Respect for the artists who step onto this stage. Respect for the crews who work tirelessly to make each show seamless. And respect for a city whose audiences are passionate and deeply connected to live performance. To play the Fox is to be welcomed into that relationship and to rise to it.

For Atlanta, it’s an affirmation. For performers, it’s a challenge. For the Fox, it’s a reflection of who we are: a place where performance is treated with care, intention, and reverence.

To “play it pretty” doesn’t mean perfection. It means giving your best to the music, to the moment, and to the city that’s listening.
