DELANEY BENSON FOLLOWS FAMILY LEGACY IN SPAMALOT

Growing up a musical theatre lover in Gainesville, GA., Delaney Benson is no stranger to the Fox Theatre.

“My first show I saw there was Wicked, and it really was the first big musical I ever saw on stage,” she said. “The theatre itself is so beautiful. To see that show in that space was magical.”

Now, as part of the ensemble of the touring production of Monty Python’s Spamalot, Benson is thrilled to be performing on the historic stage and hopes to bring some of her own magic to audiences.

“It’s really kind of surreal,” she said. “My family’s very loud and ever-present, which is great in theatre because it makes for a good audience, and there’s about 50 people—friends, family, neighbors—who are coming out to see the show, which is just amazing.”

NEVER GETS OLD

Benson grew up singing and dancing around her house, something her mom (Broadway’s Jodi Benson who voiced Ariel in the animated The Little Mermaid film) and dad (Broadway’s Ray Benson) encouraged greatly.

“My parents were both performers, so I felt like there was some shared knowledge in our house,” she said. “Doing community theatre when I was in middle school really kind of sealed the deal a little bit for me just because I loved how it made me feel and I loved how it made others feel in the audience. It’s just joyous and it never gets old.”

At the time, Benson was also heavily involved in sports, but she didn’t get the same feeling playing soccer as she did in front of an audience, so after eight years, she gave it up to hone her skills on the stage.

“It was my sophomore year in high school and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I can’t imagine doing anything else,” she said. “It was beyond my wildest dreams that I got accepted into this conservatory and that really kind of just helped with the trajectory of my career now.”

THE RIGHT DECISION

After high school, Benson was accepted into the prestigious CCM (University of Cincinnati) MT class of 2023 and knows she made the right decision with her choice.

Some of her stage highlights include her own interpretation of Ariel in The Little Mermaid, Louise in Gypsy, Kathy in Singin’ in the Rain and Phoebe in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder. She has also performed as a soloist with the Utah Symphony, Gulf Coast Symphony and the Walt Disney Company.

Her introduction to Spamalot came after graduating college and seeing the Broadway revival.

“I remember walking out of the theatre and being like, ‘I would love to be in this show,’” she said. “When I saw the announcement for the tour, I knew this was the moment and getting a role would mean everything to me.”

When she got the call that she would be part of the ensemble (and understudying The Lady of the Lake), Benson was ecstatic and considers this the perfect show to get her feet wet with the touring lifestyle.

“This is my first tour and it’s really been fun, challenging in the best way to kind of navigate the change of environment while also maintaining the same show,” she said. “I feel like for this show, and especially in this day and age, it’s so great to just have a musical comedy to sit back, relax and laugh a little bit and just to bring joy. The beauty of the show is that it changes and adapts to the time that we’re in and the people that are doing the show.”

A STRONG BOND

When she arrives at a new city, the first thing she does is goes to local coffee shops, bypassing the Starbucks and Dunkin’s of the world because she wants to understand the city’s culture as best she can.

“I also try to find an art museum and walking as much as I can, if it’s a walkable city,” Benson said. “I never have a real destination; I just see what I come across.”

She loves spending time with the other girls of the ensemble (Lindsay Lee Alhady, Claire Kennard and Meridien Terrell), and all four are in their mid-20s and graduated

around the same time, so they have a lot in common.

“A lot of us came in with a rapport already and I feel like our bond is quite strong,” Benson said. “I feel very fortunate to have gone into the first day of rehearsal knowing familiar faces.”

A DREAM COME TRUE

Benson has already performed in 200 Spamalot shows and been on for the lead seven times, and she’s having an absolute blast.

“It’s definitely the most physically demanding show I’ve been a part of; if we’re not on stage, we’re quick changing backstage,” she said. “I never get to sit down during Act One. I love the challenge of it all because it’s so rewarding. I feel like with my track, I kind of get to bring a lot of myself to it.”

Her favorite moment in the show is the song “Knights of the Round Table” because she gets to tap dance.

“I feel like it’s one of those numbers where you don’t really know what’s coming next,” Benson said. “I just love to be on that journey with the audience. And who doesn’t love a flashy number and a big sing-along?”

Looking ahead, Benson would like to someday play Glinda in Wicked and Polly Baker in Crazy for You, the role her mom originated on Broadway.

“I grew up listening to those songs, so that would be a dream come true,” she said.

ERIC IDLE (Book, Music & Lyrics) is one of the original six creators of Monty Python’s Flying Circus which began life on BBCTV in 1969. They eventually made six feature films, including two of the top ten comedy movies of all time. Eric, together with longtime collaborator and composer John Du Prez, adapted The Holy Grail, into the hit musical Monty Python’s Spamalot, which ran for almost five years on Broadway, and popped up again on Broadway in a 2023 revival and is now touring the US. The original was nominated for 13 Tonys, winning 3, including Best Director for Mike Nichols and the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2005, plus a Drama Desk Award, and a Grammy for the authors. They then created a comic oratorio Not The Messiah, He’s a Very Naughty Boy based on Monty Python’s Life of Brian, which premiered in Toronto, and played The Sydney Opera House, The Hollywood Bowl, Wolf Trap, and Carnegie Hall and was eventually filmed with most of the Pythons at The Royal Albert Hall for the 40th Anniversary of Monty Python. Eric wrote, directed and starred in The Rutles, the world’s first mockumentary, and in 2012 he sang his own song “Always Look On the Bright Side of Life”, before a billion people at the Closing Ceremony of the London Olympics. In 2014 he directed and appeared alongside conductor John Du Prez in the Monty Python final reunion show One Down Five To Go which sold out London’s O2 Arena for ten nights. In 2018 his Sortabiography Always Look on the Bright of Life became a “New York Times” best seller. In 2019 he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer which he survived thanks to early diagnosis and great Doctors. Following his appearance on The Masked Singer in 2022, he launched The Bright Side Fund (Standup2Cancer/Eric Idle) to help fund Research. His musical play What About Dick? with songs by JDP is currently playing on Prime and his latest book The Spamalot Diaries which tell the tale of the creation of Spamalot has just been nominated for a Thurber Award. His forthcoming book Idle in Provence, A Brief History of Thyme will be published by Harpers Select in September 2026.

JOHN DU PREZ (Music). A Grammy Award winning composer, John Du Prez has scored over 20 feature films including A Fish Called Wanda, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I-III, Once Bitten, The Meaning of Life and the cult classic “Weird Al” Yankovic’s UHF. A Trevelyan Scholar at Christ Church, Oxford (Oriental Studies) he worked as a Music Lecturer at London University 1974-9 and was Principal Horn of the Hong Kong Philharmonic and many other orchestras. He entered the film industry composing additional music for Monty Python’s Life of Brian. It was on this project that he first worked with Eric Idle. This began their long writing partnership which culminated in Spamalot and Not The Messiah. He also worked on two movies for George Harrison’s Handmade Films (Bullshot & Shanghai Surprise) and played trumpet on many Top 20 hits with the UK salsa band Modern Romance, winners of the Best New Band 1981 award from the NY DJ Syndicate for their club hit Everybody Salsa. He was music director for Python’s 2014 O2 Arena concerts and recently scored the Bafta Award winning TV animation series The Clangers. 2 Take care of personal needs (water, restroom use) before the performance begins.

3 Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cellphones, beepers and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience via social media but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances. The glow from your device is distracting.

4 Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theater is never allowed. It distracts those around you and endangers the performers.

5 The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point.

A fully restored 1929 “movie palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,665 seats, is a multipurpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballets, comedies, concerts, movies and private corporate events.

PRIVATE EVENTS

The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, accommodating 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. TICKET OFFICE HOURS

Ticket Office hours are Friday 10:00 AM-5:00 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM-3:00 PM. The ticket office will open approximately 3 hours before doors on show days. Doors to the Fox Theatre open one hour before showtime. Tickets for all performances may be purchased online at www.foxtheatre.org, or by calling 855-285-8499, or visiting the Fox Theatre Ticket Office during the times listed above.

In accordance with the Fulton County Clean Air Ordinance, the Fox Theatre is a smoke-free facility. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas.

ABOUT ACCESSIBILITY

ELEVATORS

Elevators are at the north end of each lobby and are available during all performances. They make it possible to access each lobby without using the stairs. Patrons should be aware that access to upper seating areas do involve stairs.

PARKING

Parking is available within a four-block radius in all directions of the Fox Theatre. Advanced reserved parking is available for sale at the Fox Ticket Office or by calling 855-285-8499. The Fox Theatre assumes no responsibility for vehicles parked in any of the privately owned lots operating in the Fox Theatre district.

PERFORMANCE NOTES

All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket to be admitted to the theater. Not all events are suitable for children. Infants will not be admitted to adult programs/ performances. Parents will be asked to remove children who create a disturbance.

• Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of management in conjunction with the wishes of the producers.

• Please turn off all pagers and cellphones before each performance.

• Camera and recording devices are strictly prohibited. Backstage employees are represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E.)

MARQUEE CLUB PRESENTED BY LEXUS

A stunning 10,000 square feet of exclusive space located on the northeast side of the theatre, the Marquee Club has access to the fabulous rooftop terrace overlooking the iconic Fox marquee and Peachtree Street. The Marquee Club is the perfect way to elevate your experience at the Fox. The club can be accessed through one of the annual membership options or on a per-event basis, as space allows. EVERY VENUE HAS TRADITIONS. FEW HAVE A MANTRA.

“Play It Pretty for Atlanta” is a phrase that lives quietly behind the scenes at the Fox Theatre and carries enormous weight for those who pass beneath it. Its origin traces back to a legendary moment in Fox history. In 1976, while recording the album One More from the Road live at the Fox Theatre, Lynyrd Skynyrd frontman Ronnie Van Zant turned to his band onstage during “Free Bird” and said, “play it pretty for Atlanta.” The words weren’t scripted, but they landed. That performance would become iconic, and the band later directed proceeds from their Fox performances to support the Save the Fox campaign, helping ensure the theatre’s survival.

Over time, “Play It Pretty for Atlanta” evolved into a quiet ritual. At its core, the phrase is rooted in respect. Respect for the artists who step onto this stage. Respect for the crews who work tirelessly to make each show seamless. And respect for a city whose audiences are passionate and deeply connected to live performance. To play the Fox is to be welcomed into that relationship and to rise to it.

For Atlanta, it’s an affirmation. For performers, it’s a challenge. For the Fox, it’s a reflection of who we are: a place where performance is treated with care, intention, and reverence.

To “play it pretty” doesn’t mean perfection. It means giving your best to the music, to the moment, and to the city that’s listening.
