A HOMECOMING FOR SIX’S EMMA ELIZABETH SMITH

Born and raised in Alpharetta, Emma Elizabeth Smith is ecstatic to be performing at the historic Fox Theatre as Catherine of Aragon in the national touring company of Six and paying tribute to the people and schools who helped get her to where she is today.

“I grew up seeing shows at the Fox since I was probably 3,” she said. “It’s an iconic, gorgeous theatre in my hometown, so it’s going to be a really fullcircle moment.”

Smith went to Kings Ridge Christian School and that’s where she received a lot of her training.

“I did choral training there, dance team, I led worship there all the time, and did my first acting training there,” she said. “I would also do TV and film stuff. I learned a lot doing that.”

She credits her acting teacher, Kathy Winchel, with teaching her about

self-tapes and the opportunities she could find in the theatre.

“She truly changed the way I saw theatre and the way I looked at this art form as being a full career,” Smith said. “She helped form so much of the way I carry myself professionally.”

THAT FIRST MOMENT ON STAGE

Smith also noted her mother ran the fine arts program at Kings Ridge, so she got to help her build that program being one of the first students who really wanted to take the career more seriously.

Around the state, Smith also regularly performed at the Georgia Theatre Conference and was a featured soloist for multiple years in the opening number.

“I did the Shuler Awards my freshman year and was a featured vocalist in that as well,” she said.

For Smith, there was never any doubt in her life that she wanted to be a performer.

“Honestly, I started doing theatre when I was 8—my first show was The Music Man —but it started well before that as just a passion of mine. From that first moment on stage, I don’t think it was a question of whether or not this is what I wanted to do, I was going to do it. Fortunately, I had a family who believed in my crazy ideas and has been supportive along the way.”

After graduating from Texas State University in 2024, she auditioned for Six, and was cast in the touring production as Catherine of Aragon. Interestingly, Smith is the fifth person from her college musical theatre program to be cast in a production of Six

“This has been a dream project for me,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to be in Six. I would watch it on the treadmill at the gym and just dream of being in it. The queen I ended up with wasn’t originally what I thought would be the perfect match, but through the audition process we found the perfect match.”

FEMALE EMPOWERMENT MOMENT

She still finds it surreal that this is her job, and she loves every moment on stage.

“My favorite part is the ‘I Don’t Need Your Love’ remix at the end when all six of us are finally united,” Smith said. “It’s just the most female empowerment moment. We’ve spent the past 90 minutes supporting each

other having their moment, so it’s fun to come together as the girl group again at the end.”

Both the message of the show and support among the Queendom is felt off-stage as well.

“These women have taught me so much,” she said. “Most of them have done multiple tours or Broadway, so they all know the ‘Six way.’ I came in knowing I was just going to be a sponge. We can’t allow society to frame us in a way of putting us against each other, but instead we are highlighting each person’s individuality.”

RECONNECTING WITH ATLANTA

With this being Smith’s first professional job, she’s soaking everything in and making the most of each city she visits.

“When I get to a new place, I love to go get a nice dinner and I’ve been trying fun restaurants in each city,” she said. “Now that we’re in warmer weather, I’ve been loving going to the beach and being outside.”

When she’s back home in Atlanta, Smith is excited to show her castmates around and reconnect with her community.

“I’m most looking forward to just being with my family and holding my dog,” she said.

Probably a type of cancer.

Her refusal to accept that her marriage was invalid; her faith; her dramatic speech to Henry when he had her brought to court to seek the annulment of their marriage.

While Henry fought in France in 1513, Catherine was regent during the Battle of Flodden; when James IV of Scotland was killed in the battle, Catherine wanted to send his body to Henry as a present.

Fashion, dancing, flirtation, collecting evangelical works. Lady-in-waiting to Catherine of Aragon.

Lily Allen and Avril Lavigne.

Religious faith, obedience. Lady-in-waiting to Anne Boleyn.

Hemorrhage after the birth of Prince Edward; her child with Henry.

Being the “only one he truly loved”; having two troublesome brothers who fought over the regency of the young Prince Edward after King Henry’s death. While Anne Boleyn was still alive, Henry sent Jane a gift of money which she refused, apparently saying there “was no treasure in this world that she valued so much as her honor.”

When Henry first met Anna of Cleves, he disguised himself, possibly imagining some sort of a romantic reaction. Being completely used (and abused) by those with power over her.

From her arrest on November 8, 1541 until her execution three months later, Katherine stayed under house arrest at Syon House; in late January of 1542, an act was passed in Parliament that rendered it treason for a woman to become the king’s wife without “plain declaration before of her unchaste life,” meaning Henry could have her killed.

1. Please arrive early. Latecomers may not be seated until intermission.

2 Take care of personal needs (water, restroom use) before the performance begins.

7 Please refrain from talking, humming or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artists or show.

8 Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag.

FOX FUN FACTS

EVERY VENUE HAS TRADITIONS. FEW HAVE A MANTRA.

“Play It Pretty for Atlanta” is a phrase that lives quietly behind the scenes at the Fox Theatre and carries enormous weight for those who pass beneath it. Its origin traces back to a legendary moment in Fox history. In 1976, while recording the album One More from the Road live at the Fox Theatre, Lynyrd Skynyrd frontman Ronnie Van Zant turned to his band onstage during “Free Bird” and said, “play it pretty for Atlanta.” The words weren’t scripted, but they landed. That performance would become iconic, and the band later directed proceeds from their Fox performances to support the Save the Fox campaign, helping ensure the theatre’s survival.

Over time, “Play It Pretty for Atlanta” evolved into a quiet ritual. At its core, the phrase is rooted in respect. Respect for the artists who step onto this stage. Respect for the crews who work tirelessly to make each show seamless. And respect for a city whose audiences are passionate and deeply connected to live performance. To play the Fox is to be welcomed into that relationship and to rise to it.

For Atlanta, it’s an affirmation. For performers, it’s a challenge. For the Fox, it’s a reflection of who we are: a place where performance is treated with care, intention, and reverence.

To “play it pretty” doesn’t mean perfection. It means giving your best to the music, to the moment, and to the city that’s listening.
