WRITER, TRUMPETER, WING EATER— MIKE NAPPI IS A TRIPLE THREAT STORY BY
Keith Loria Although he plays Peanut in the national touring company of Shucked, Mike Nappi is more about chicken wings than the salty snack for which his character is named. “I’ve been having chicken wings in every city the tour stops at,” he said. “I’ve been curating a list of the best wings, and we take pictures of all the wings, and it’s just a blast.” For example, when the for went to Charlotte, NC, he was planning on trying D.D. Peckers, which he heard from some of the cast are the best in town. His favorite to date were found in Austin, Texas. “I love spicy,” he said. “I have a really high tolerance. I always think it’s fun to get the hottest wings. I’m always up for suggestions from locals about where to go when I’m in town.” He also loves exploring the different cities with his castmates and often

visits the museums and parks that each location is known for. HIS ‘CRAZY DAY’ Nappi has been performing since he was 8, when he did Oliver! at a local community theater in Doylestown, PA. “I was a shy kid, and I did theatre, and it broke me out of my shell,” he said. “I grew up doing things at the Bucks County Playhouse and I studied at Temple Mike Nappi University, and I knew acting was what I wanted to do as a career.” It was while working at a show Off-Broadway—playing 34 characters with Nickelodeon’s Marc Summers in Life & Slimes at New World Stages—that he was asked to audition for Shucked. “It was a crazy day because The Great Gatsby was opening [on Broadway] that same night and Jason Howland who did all the orchestrations for Shucked also wrote the music for that, and Robert Horn, the playwright for Shucked, was sitting four rows ahead of me,” Nappi explained. “He turned around and started talking to me and it was just kismet. I was asked to come back for the final callback and I ended up booking the show.” 20 JOKES A DAY Nappi is no stranger to comedy, but he calls Peanut the “Mack Daddy” of them all, spouting one liner after one liner. “Robert wrote about 20 jokes a day and we would try all of them,” he said. “There’s probably 100 jokes that didn’t make the show that are just as funny. It was so cool to be able to collaborate with him and the unbelievable team. There’s nothing like doing those jokes every night and having that relationship with the audience. I’m so grateful to do it and it’s really fun to do.” Although it might seem like Nappi is making up some of the jokes as he goes along, everything is scripted, and the only improv is “holding” as he waits for the laughter to die down in the audience. “There are some new jokes from what was in the Broadway show,” he said. “Kevin Cahoon who played Peanut on Broadway was a completely different Peanut and they wanted to craft what my version of the character was like. That’s been great to build that.” MELDING HIS TWO LOVES The actor is also an accomplished musician and recently played trumpet in the Zumane Festival in Morocco with the Playing for Change Foundation

alongside musicians from around the world. “My dad is a music teacher, and I started playing trumpet in fifth grade and I was very serious and dedicated to it,” Nappi said. “I still play, and it’s gotten me a lot of gigs as an actor. There’s a trend of actor/musicians where actors play instruments on stage now. It’s been really cool to meld these two loves together.” Additionally, Nappi is interested in writing and is developing two new musicals, The World’s Cassette Library and Take Me Back to Yellowstone, that he hopes to one day bring to the stage. “It’s something I always wanted to do but never had time for,” Nappi said. “During the pandemic, I found the time. I started writing with a couple of friends of mine and we did a couple of readings in New York and are going to do a workshop at Sacred Heart University with some college students. It’s been a fun journey. It takes a while to develop a musical and it’s been fascinating to see how it evolves and changes.” That’s sort of what happened with Shucked, which began as a “HeeHaw” musical and evolved into the smash theatrical run on Broadway and on tour. “I’m so excited to be part of this wonderful show,” he said, “Touring is an adventure, and I love it.”

foryourinformation THE THEATER A fully restored 1929 “movie palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,665 seats, is a multipurpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballets, comedies, concerts, movies and private corporate events. PRIVATE EVENTS The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, accommodating 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. TICKET OFFICE HOURS Ticket Office hours are Friday 10:00 AM-5:00 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM-3:00 PM. The ticket office will open approximately 3 hours before doors on show days. THE BOSS BRINGS THE DARKNESS, PRINCE’S FINAL SHOWS AND OUTKAST DOES BALLET Atlanta’s Fox Theatre has played host to many world-renowned artists, from Elvis Presley and Bruce Springsteen to Pearl Jam and Prince. In 1978, Bruce Springsteen ended his legendary Darkness On The Edge of Town tour at the Fox Theatre with two back-to-back shows. “This is the last night of our tour, tonight,” Bruce said to the sold-out crowd at the top of the show. “Our 86th show. So one more time for the last time.” Recordings of the set remain one of the Boss’s most sought-after bootlegs. Here are a few other rockin’ fun facts:
• Prince performed what would be his final two concerts at the Fox Theatre April 14, 2016. Playing solo on his Piano and a Microphone tour, The Purple One dazzled two sold-out crowds with a selection of hits and covers, ranging from Joni Mitchell to David Bowie to Vince Guaraldi’s theme from Peanuts. Appropriately, Prince closed out
his last set with three encores, ending on an extended medley of “Purple Rain”. • Pearl Jam played the Fox Theatre on April 3, 1994 to debut material from their upcoming album Vs. The set was simulcast on radio stations across the globe and became a much soughtafter bootleg among fans before receiving an official release in 2024. • In 2008, OutKast’s Big Boi traded his signature Nikes for pointe shoes, joining the Atlanta Ballet for “Big” which ran for six performances at the Fox April 10-13.

• Despite being criticized as a “semi-hillbilly” by the Atlanta Constitution, Elvis Presley performed six sold out shows at the Fox Theatre over the course of two days in March of 1956. The price to see the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll? $1.
