ATLANTA’S JORDAN MARKUS BRINGS MICHAEL JACKSON TO LIFE STORY BY
Keith Loria Jordan Markus, who grew up in Atlanta, was a theatre late bloomer. “I was about 17 years old and playing basketball when I injured myself and realized I needed to do something else, but I didn’t know what other extracurriculars I could do,” he said. “A friend convinced me to join the school’s musical. I was really reluctant at first. I’d always loved to sing, but I took a backseat when I started playing sports. I fell back in love with singing and fell in love with theatre for the first time.” That show was Bring It On, and it ignited a passion that continues to this day. “After high school, I hit the ground running auditioning for everything I could get my hands on,” Markus said. “I was doing shows around Atlanta, then moved to San Diego and did a bunch of theatre out there.”

HIS MUSICAL HERO It was while doing a show in San Diego that one of his castmates recommended him for the tour of MJ the Musical, so he sent in a tape but didn’t think much about it after that. He got a few callbacks and flew back and forth to New York, never really believing it would happen. “I remember getting the call while I was at Universal Studios with my family, standing in line for the Harry Potter ride,” Markus said. “I jumped out of line and said, ‘I’ve got to take this.’ They Jordan Markus asked me to come on tour, and it was a really fun day, to say the least.” He was cast as Jackson himself, a role that had a great deal of significance for him. “I was the biggest MJ fan growing up,” Markus said. “For Halloween, I was Michael Jackson five years in a row as a child. He was one of the biggest reasons I fell in love with music in the first place and wanted to sing, dance and perform. It feels like a full-circle moment performing the show every night and playing my musical hero.” Markus has been touring in the production since the summer of 2023 and will continue through the summer of 2026. FAVORITE SONGS “My favorite part about being on tour is visiting places I never thought I would and being surprised by how lively and welcoming the audiences are,” he said. “Even the smaller towns have surprised me with how fun the audiences are. I love being able to touch so many different regions of North America and see both the differences and similarities between communities.” On stage, his favorite songs change night to night, but his most consistent favorites are “Smooth Criminal,” “Billie Jean” and “Stranger in Moscow,” though the latter was one he didn’t know before joining the show. “It’s such a celebration of art that we all know and love, from an artist we all know and love,” Markus said. “The show also humanizes Michael Jackson. He was larger than life, but he was also human. People forget that side of him, and I love that our show focuses on both the man behind the music and the absolute legend. Audiences get a peek behind the curtain while also hearing all the songs they know, love, and want to dance to.” Considering the Fox Theatre was about half an hour from where he grew up, Markus is thrilled that he gets to perform as MJ in his hometown venue. “I remember seeing touring productions there all the time, which makes it so cool to now be performing there,” he said. “One of the first shows I ever saw was at the Fox; it was High School Musical on stage. This will be my first time performing at the Fox, and it feels like a full-circle childhood dream. Having family and friends come out is going to make it really special.”

MUST-DO’S AT EVERY STOP Markus isn’t alone on tour; he travels with his French bulldog, Milo. “It’s really nice to have a piece of home with me on the road,” he said. “There are a few other people on the tour who travel with pets, which makes it even nicer.” He has enjoyed the camaraderie of those on the tour and shared the group tries to go out together in every town they go to. “We’re a very tight-knit group, we really got lucky,” he said. “Touring can be a toss-up, but everyone here is so talented and amazing in their own right. We hang out a lot outside the show, and whenever I can, I try to check in and spend time with the cast.” Markus himself has some must-do’s in every stop, including finding a good coffee shop and checking to see if there’s a Texas Roadhouse nearby. And of course, he always makes sure there’s a good place to take his dog out.

foryourinformation THE THEATER A fully restored 1929 “movie palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,665 seats, is a multipurpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballets, comedies, concerts, movies and private corporate events. PRIVATE EVENTS The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, accommodating 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. TICKET OFFICE HOURS Ticket Office hours are Friday 10:00 AM-5:00 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM-3:00 PM. The ticket office will open approximately 3 hours before doors on show days. “Play It Pretty for Atlanta” is a phrase that lives quietly behind the scenes at the Fox Theatre and carries enormous weight for those who pass beneath it. Its origin traces back to a legendary moment in Fox history. In 1976, while recording the album One More from the Road live at the Fox Theatre, Lynyrd Skynyrd frontman Ronnie Van Zant turned to his band onstage during “Free Bird” and said, “play it pretty for Atlanta.” The words weren’t scripted, but they landed. That performance would become iconic, and the band later directed proceeds from their Fox performances to support the Save the Fox campaign, helping ensure the theatre’s survival. Over time, “Play It Pretty for Atlanta” evolved into a quiet ritual. At its core, the phrase is rooted in respect. Respect for the artists who step onto this stage. Respect for the crews who work tirelessly to make each show seamless. And respect for a city whose audiences are passionate and deeply connected to live performance.
