DESMOND SEAN ELLINGTON RETURNS TO ATLANTA IN A DREAM ROLE STORY BY
Keith Loria Desmond Sean Ellington is thrilled to be in the spotlight in Hell’s Kitchen and performing in the show in his adopted home. Ellington, who plays Davis in the national tour of Alicia Keys’ hit Broadway musical, considers Atlanta a pivotal chapter in his life and career. Therefore, returning in a leading role is more than just another stop on the tour, it is a full-circle moment that reflects a remarkable journey fueled by faith, persistence and the belief that transformation can happen at any age. You see, before he made his Broadway debut or toured the country with Hamilton, Ellington was living in Atlanta, unsure of his direction but searching for purpose. Although he grew up singing in church, professional theatre wasn’t part of his world. “I was born in Arkansas and grew up in Oklahoma in a military family,”
6 | encore he said. “Theatre just wasn’t part of my experience. I’d never even seen a Broadway show until my 33rd birthday.” AN IMPULSIVE CELEBRATION That trip to New York—an impulsive celebration that included seeing the musical Chicago—became a turning point. “I was sitting there in the theatre and something just clicked,” Ellington said. “I thought to myself, maybe this is something I could actually do.” Back in Atlanta after that birthday revelation, Ellington began performing in local Desmond Sean Ellington productions and chorus roles simply for fun. At the time, he was getting frustrated, seeing his friends starting to settle down in their careers and getting married and having kids, and he was still uncertain of his path. “I still hadn’t found my thing,” Ellington said. “I remember hearing Oprah Winfrey talk about when she was cast in the movie The Color Purple back in the day. And she prayed this prayer of surrender. It’s like, whatever, you know, God, universe, whatever you have for me, or whatever it is that I’m supposed to be doing, I surrender myself to it. I prayed kind of like a similar prayer, thinking if it worked for Oprah, it could work for me. I was approaching my mid-30s at this point where I needed to start figuring out my life out or at least have an idea of where I was going.” AN UNEXPECTED EMAIL Then, right as frustration about his future peaked, he received an unexpected email about auditions for a new musical at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre called Born For This, telling the story of gospel singers BeBe and CeCe Winans. He booked the show and credited that moment as the answer to a prayer. “From that moment on, I fixed my mind on doing theatre and learning how to be an actor in real time,” he said. “Through that show, I got my Equity card.” The production eventually moved to Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., before heading to Los Angeles, where Ellington experienced another lifealtering moment. He saw the Hamilton national tour and recognized that the very show that had terrified him might also be his destiny. “I said, ‘I’m going to be in this show one day.’ Two months later, I was cast,” Ellington said, noting that for more than five years he covered Burr, Madison and George Washington. “Hamilton was my university. I needed to learn everything I could because whatever I did next would be based on that.” Next came Hell’s Kitchen, which Ellington joined first Off-Broadway at The Public Theater, then on to Broadway where he understudied the role

of Davis. When his contract ended, he stunned colleagues by declining renewal. “I knew I was ready to be a lead and didn’t want to get stuck in an understudy role,” he said. “About a month later, they offered me the chance to lead the first national tour. The power of manifestation is real.” HIS FULL-CIRCLE MOMENT For him, one of the greatest joys is performing alongside an exceptionally young, talented cast. “Our [female] lead just turned 18,” Ellington said. “Seeing what they’re doing at such a high level inspires me. It keeps me young.” Now he steps back onto the Fox Theatre stage, the same place he appeared with Hamilton when touring resumed after the pandemic shutdown, and one that holds such fond memories. “That was a full-circle moment,” he said. “Atlanta is home for me. That’s where I started my acting career. To come back now as a lead… it means the world.” While home, Ellington is eager to reconnect with friends and hopes young dreamers see themselves in his story. “I know what a life-changing moment theatre can be,” he said. “If someone sees me onstage and thinks, ‘If he can do it, I can do it too,’ then I’ve done my job.”

foryourinformation THE THEATRE A fully restored 1929 “movie palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,665 seats, is a multipurpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballets, comedies, concerts, movies and private corporate events. PRIVATE EVENTS The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, accommodating 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. TICKET OFFICE HOURS Ticket Office hours are Friday 10:00 AM-5:00 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM-3:00 PM. The ticket office will open approximately 3 hours before doors on show days. THE BOSS BRINGS THE DARKNESS, PRINCE’S FINAL SHOWS AND OUTKAST DOES BALLET Atlanta’s Fox Theatre has played host to many world-renowned artists, from Elvis Presley and Bruce Springsteen to Pearl Jam and Prince. In 1978, Bruce Springsteen ended his legendary Darkness On The Edge of Town tour at the Fox Theatre with two back-to-back shows. “This is the last night of our tour, tonight,” Bruce said to the sold-out crowd at the top of the show. “Our 86th show. So one more time for the last time.” Recordings of the set remain one of the Boss’s most sought-after bootlegs. Here are a few other rockin’ fun facts:
• Prince performed what would be his final two concerts at the Fox Theatre April 14, 2016. Playing solo on his Piano and a Microphone tour, The Purple One dazzled two sold-out crowds with a selection of hits and covers, ranging from Joni Mitchell to David Bowie to Vince Guaraldi’s theme from Peanuts. Appropriately, Prince closed out
his last set with three encores, ending on an extended medley of “Purple Rain”. • Pearl Jam played the Fox Theatre on April 3, 1994 to debut material from their upcoming album Vs. The set was simulcast on radio stations across the globe and became a much soughtafter bootleg among fans before receiving an official release in 2024. • In 2008, OutKast’s Big Boi traded his signature Nikes for pointe shoes, joining the Atlanta Ballet for “Big” which ran for six performances at the Fox April 10-13.
