Being the title sponsor of Broadway in Atlanta is something we’re truly proud of because it connects directly to two things that matter a lot to us at Regions Bank:

And of course, none of this happens without you. Thank you for showing up, supporting the arts, and sharing in the magic of live theater. Enjoy the show—and enjoy the season ahead!

STORY BY Keith Loria
For many, the world of Harry Potter is defined by the seven novels and eight films that followed the young wizard from neglected orphan to heroic savior. This iconic tale ended with the defeat of Voldemort and a brief glimpse of the future, showing Harry and his friends as adults sending their children off to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Theatergoers know that the story did not stop there, thanks to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a sequel set firmly in that future centered not on the original heroes but on their children. That means new protagonists and a new villain created by playwright Jack Thorne, with J.K. Rowling serving as a creative consultant rather than the primary writer.
In Thorne’s story, the setting is 19 years after the Battle of Hogwarts, exactly where the epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows leaves off. Harry Potter is no longer the boy who lived, but a middle-aged man working at the Ministry of Magic as Head of Magical Law Enforcement. He is married to Ginny
Weasley and struggling with a challenge he never trained for: being a father. The scars of his own childhood and his wartime experiences linger, shaping how he approaches his family and the world. Though he once faced dark wizards without flinching, he now finds himself unsure how to reach his own son.

That son, Albus Severus Potter, is the emotional center of the play. Albus grows up in the shadow of his father’s fame and feels crushed by the expectations attached to his name. Unlike Harry, who discovered a sense of belonging when he arrived at Hogwarts, Albus feels out of place from the start. His sorting into Slytherin House only deepens his sense of isolation, marking him as different within a family defined by Gryffindor bravery. Albus is introverted, uncertain and deeply aware that he does not resemble the legendary figure the wizarding world expects him to become.
Albus’s closest friend is Scorpius Malfoy, the son of Draco Malfoy. Scorpius carries his own burden of reputation, including whispers about his parentage and what it might mean for the future of the wizarding world. Unlike Draco, who was arrogant and antagonistic in his early years, his son is kind, anxious and thoughtful, with a sharp intellect and sincere loyalty to Albus. In fact, it’s their friendship that forms the heart of the play, built on shared insecurity, humor and a mutual longing to define themselves outside of their family histories.
There’s also Rose Granger-Weasley, who is ambitious, clever and hardworking, much like her mother Hermione. She is eager to get to Hogwarts and begin her life there and grow closer with her cousin, Albus.
Fans of the novels and films will be pleased that the adult characters from the original series remain important, but they are reframed through the lens of time and consequence. Hermione Granger is now Minister for Magic, still principled and formidable. Ron Weasley runs Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes store, providing comic relief while remaining a steady presence in the lives of his friends. Draco Malfoy, having lost his wife, has become a fiercely protective father, more reflective and guarded than the boy Harry once knew. The old rivalries have not vanished, but they have evolved, shaped by grief, responsibility and the shared task of raising children in a world still healing from war.

The play also introduces a new antagonist whose motivations are rooted in the unresolved legacy of the villainous Voldemort and the lingering trauma of the previous generation. Unlike the clear-cut evil of the original series, this villain emerges from secrecy, resentment and manipulation, reflecting the darker emotional undercurrents of a post-war world. The threat is not just physical destruction but the unraveling of identity, history and trust.
As the story moves between past and present, the emotional focus returns again and again to the fractured relationship between Harry and Albus. Harry’s fear of repeating his own parents’ mistakes clashes with Albus’s fear of never being enough.
Unlike the novels, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was written specifically for the stage, and its storytelling reflects that origin. Scenes unfold in rapid succession, with visual illusions and theatrical transformations replacing the internal narration of the books. The result is a story that feels familiar in setting but different in rhythm and tone, emphasizing experience over exposition. While Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is not a retelling of past glories, it is a wonderful exploration of what comes after them. It asks what happens when legends become parents, when victories leave emotional wreckage behind and when children inherit histories they did not choose. By shifting the focus to a new generation and placing familiar characters in unfamiliar roles, the play expands the Wizarding World beyond nostalgia.

EVERY VENUE HAS TRADITIONS. FEW HAVE A MANTRA.
“Play It Pretty for Atlanta” is a phrase that lives quietly behind the scenes at the Fox Theatre and carries enormous weight for those who pass beneath it. Its origin traces back to a legendary moment in Fox history. In 1976, while recording the album One More from the Road live at the Fox Theatre, Lynyrd Skynyrd frontman Ronnie Van Zant turned to his band onstage during “Free Bird” and said, “play it pretty for Atlanta.” The words weren’t scripted, but they landed. That performance would become iconic, and the band later directed proceeds from their Fox performances to support the Save the Fox campaign, helping ensure the theatre’s survival.
Over time, “Play It Pretty for Atlanta” evolved into a quiet ritual. At its core, the phrase is rooted in respect. Respect for the artists who step onto this stage. Respect for the crews who work tirelessly to make each show seamless. And respect for a city whose audiences are passionate and deeply connected to live performance. To play the Fox is to be welcomed into that relationship and to rise to it.
For Atlanta, it’s an affirmation. For performers, it’s a challenge. For the Fox, it’s a reflection of who we are: a place where performance is treated with care, intention, and reverence.
To “play it pretty” doesn’t mean perfection. It means giving your best to the music, to the moment, and to the city that’s listening.
