HAMILTON STAR TYLER FAUNTLEROY’S OUTLOOK ON AMERICA AT 250 STORY BY
ROBERT VIAGAS Exactly two hundred and fifty years ago this summer, the Founding Fathers were laboring in the oppressive heat of Philadelphia to give birth to a new nation—the United States of America. Their story has been told many times, but rarely as entertainingly as in the 2015 musical Hamilton, which poses urgent and fundamental questions about where our nation came from and where it is going. The show may be 11 years old at this point, but the current touring version has a lot to say about America—not only in its earliest days, but still today. “There’s a line from the show that is beautiful and haunting,” said Tyler Fauntleroy who plays the central role of Alexander Hamilton: “ ‘America, you great unfinished symphony, you sent for me. You let me make a difference. A place where even orphaned immigrants can leave their fingerprints and rise up.’ It’s the ultimate reminder of the ideal nation we hope to be.” Fauntleroy, a native of Hampton, Virginia, explained, “Symphonies are all about how the unique become unified for a beautiful purpose without
6 | encore losing their differentiation. In fact, it’s the differences that make a symphony special. You don’t go to a symphony to listen to 50 trumpets playing the same song. But each different instrument and musician brings their capabilities and experiences to the table. I think the more we honor and cherish those things that make us unique the more we are able to hear the harmony. You can hear the beauty. What makes it haunting are the times in our nation’s history where that hasn’t been the case. In our past and our present, we see that America has not always been a beacon of the beauty of the symphony it idealizes. That line Tyler Fauntleroy haunts me and gives me hope. Haunts me because I know that not every American feels like [they are] welcome in the symphony. And hope, because I believe things can still shift.” With book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton won 11 Tony Awards, plus the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, a Grammy Award for its cast album, Olivier Awards for its London production, and a special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors. THE APPEAL FOR YOUNG THEATREGOERS In addition to being so effective as history, Hamilton has had a special appeal to younger audiences, even teens. “I wish [Hamilton] would have premiered when I was in high school!” Fauntleroy said, “There are many reasons, but I think the biggest reason would be the use of Hip Hop. Hamilton has thrust Hip Hop onto a plethora of theatregoers who wouldn’t otherwise engage with the genre for a multitude of reasons. Some dislike it altogether or some just have listened to very little of it. But Hip Hop has always been the language that younger generations resonate with. And where Hip Hop has evolved over the years, it’s become the dominating genre for a lot of the younger audience members. So essentially Hamilton takes history that can feel sometimes like mythology and puts it into a genre and language that feels familiar and enjoyable.” This is not Fauntleroy’s first brush with history. He appeared in The Most Spectacularly Lamentable Trial of Miz Martha Washington at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, and acted in regional productions of Shakespeare’s The Tempest and Henry IV. His current show is so optimistic about America’s potential in its earliest days. Have recent disagreements between the political parties and their leaders affected how people react to Hamilton? “It has,” Fauntleroy said. “I get messages sometimes on social media how some people find it difficult in our current time to be excited about America or where it’s headed. How

you metabolize America’s position will be how you hear the show. We’re a different nation in 2026 than we were in 2015. We listen to the show with a new lens. Both the audience and us onstage.” Hamilton has played for audiences in red states and in blue. You might expect that audiences in different places would react differently. But Fauntleroy said that’s not necessarily the case. “For the most part, we get the same responses wherever we are in the country. The main differences are in places where the show is visiting for the first time. Sometimes I notice they tend to be either really excited or slightly more reserved as they take everything in for the first time.” Like many of the people seeing the show and reading this story, Founding Fathers Hamilton, Washington and Jefferson were all regular theatregoers. The Hamiltons and the Washingtons even attended theatre together in New York City at the dawn of that city’s history as a theatre center (specifically to see The Critic at the John Street Theatre). Their theatre experiences may have influenced their thinking about the future of our nation. “I think it speaks to their sense of imagination which you have to have a great deal of to start a nation from scratch,” he said. “I’m sure theatre got that muscle working in their minds to see the bigger picture.

The show opens with Viola Van Horn and her group of immortals sharing “a secret you would die for” by offering the audience a magic potion that grants eternal beauty and perfection (“If You Want Perfection”). Vain and self-absorbed actress Madeline Ashton performs in the Broadway show Me! Me! Me! (“For the Gaze”). She is visited by her old friend and struggling writer Helen Sharp, whom she frequently belittles and insults for her own amusement. However, Helen has one-upped Madeline by revealing she is engaged to famed plastic surgeon, Ernest Menville, and relishes the opportunity to get back at her frenemy (“That Was Then, This is Now”). Madeline invites the two over to her home, where she seduces Ernest (“Tell Me, Ernest”), steals him from Helen and ends up marrying him (“Madeline Ashton’s Intimate Wedding Extravaganza”), with Ernest promising during the wedding to stay “til death do us part” (“Ernest’s Real Vows”). Helen has a psychotic break and is forcibly committed to a mental hospital, where she obsesses over killing Madeline (“Madeline”).

foryourinformation THE THEATER A fully restored 1929 “movie palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,665 seats, is a multipurpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballets, comedies, concerts, movies and private corporate events. PRIVATE EVENTS The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, accommodating 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. TICKET OFFICE HOURS Ticket Office hours are Friday 10:00 AM-5:00 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM-3:00 PM. The ticket office will open approximately 3 hours before doors on show days. “Play It Pretty for Atlanta” is a phrase that lives quietly behind the scenes at the Fox Theatre and carries enormous weight for those who pass beneath it. Its origin traces back to a legendary moment in Fox history. In 1976, while recording the album One More from the Road live at the Fox Theatre, Lynyrd Skynyrd frontman Ronnie Van Zant turned to his band onstage during “Free Bird” and said, “play it pretty for Atlanta.” The words weren’t scripted, but they landed. That performance would become iconic, and the band later directed proceeds from their Fox performances to support the Save the Fox campaign, helping ensure the theatre’s survival. Over time, “Play It Pretty for Atlanta” evolved into a quiet ritual. At its core, the phrase is rooted in respect. Respect for the artists who step onto this stage. Respect for the crews who work tirelessly to make each show seamless. And respect for a city whose audiences are passionate and deeply connected to live performance. To play the Fox is to be welcomed into that relationship and to rise to it. For Atlanta, it’s an affirmation. For performers, it’s a challenge. For the Fox, it’s a reflection of who we are: a place where performance is treated with care, intention, and reverence. To “play it pretty” doesn’t mean perfection. It means giving your best to the music, to the moment, and to the city that’s listening.
