STEPHEN MARK LUKAS PLAYS THE VILLAIN YOU LOVE TO HATE

The first time Stephen Mark Lukas saw Beauty and the Beast on Broadway, it wasn’t just another family trip from Maine into New York, it was the moment everything clicked for him. Sitting in the audience at the Palace Theatre, after years of annual November weekends packed with four or five shows, he realized he didn’t just love musical theater, he wanted to be part of it.

“We used to buy all the CDs of the musicals that we saw and listen to them in the car and sing along,” he said. “I’m the only professional musician or actor in my family, but there was a really deep love of Broadway from when I was way young.”

Early on, Lukas did every facet of performing that he could.

“If there was a choir at school, I was in it,” he said. “I played the trombone

in the school band. There were community theatre shows that I auditioned for and did. I ended up going to boarding school at Phillips Exeter [in New Hampshire] and I had a great voice teacher there who really was the one who convinced me during high school that you could do this for a living.”

He was accepted to NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and never looked back. Now, years after seeing Beauty and the Beast on Broadway, that early spark has taken him full circle, as he takes the stage as the handsome but comically arrogant Gaston in Disney’s 30th anniversary touring production, stepping into a role that once helped inspire the career he’s living today.

“This is a show that’s always been on my radar,” he said. “I played Gaston a few different times before, the last time was at Paper Mill Playhouse in 2019.”

Lukas was on tour with Funny Girl when the opportunity to audition for Gaston came about.

“It was absolutely luck of the draw that we happened to be in Philadelphia, only an hour and a half from New York,” he said. “When you’re on tour, it’s not always possible to get back to the city and audition. I took the train down, did the audition, and then it was several callbacks, the dance call and I ended up getting the offer.”

Beauty and the Beast now is a bit different than the one he first saw as a youngster, and he’s thrilled to be bringing this enchanted story to the stage around the country.

“I am so pleased to be a part of this new production, which really is fresh and original; it honors the original material, but it is definitely a new production,” Lukas said. “And Gaston is just a great role. He is the villain of the piece, but he’s a really fun villain. Matt West, our director, always says he’s someone who has 13 mirrors positioned to look at himself in his house all the time.”

WHAT HE LOVES

Gaston’s confidence and bravado are to such an extent that they become absurd and that’s another thing he loves about the character.

“That’s why we laugh at him, but he’s also someone who really stands in his power,” Lukas said. “The aspect of it that I enjoy is that he really leans into everything with a profound sense of enjoyment. That’s really fun as an actor.”

The musical still resonates with both the young and the old, and the new production was designed so it wasn’t just a kids show.

“We have parents and grandparents bringing kids and grandkids to experience it for the first time and it’s just so rewarding,” Lukas said. “In

these times, where the world seems so divided, it’s really rewarding to do something that everybody loves.”

While he loves meeting young fans at the stage door, he does admit that some of the kids are a little scared of him.

“I have to remind them, ‘I’m really a nice person in real life—that’s just the character I play,” he said. “I used to meet actors at the stage door when I was younger so now I get to kind of pay that forward and hopefully inspire kids who are thinking about doing theater.”

LOCAL FLAVOR

This is Lukas’ third national tour having toured the country for both Funny Girl and The Book of Mormon

“Now, I always have to find a gym in each city because of the character I play and it’s just part of my routine,” he said. “I also always look for a good coffee shop, and I love a good bookstore. I also try to take one day and find a museum—an art museum or a local history museum—just to get a little bit of the local flavor.”

He’s excited that he’s back at the Fox Theatre, as he had a great time visiting the city when he was on tour with Funny Girl two years ago.

“It’s such a beautiful theatre and so big and really fun to play,” Lukas said. “I had some great food the last time I was in town and I am excited to be back.”

WHO’S WHO in the CAST

ANGELA LANSBURY (Voice of the Prologue Narrator) enjoyed a career spanning almost 75 years in film, stage and television. Her numerous Broadway credits include Mame (Tony Award®), Dear World (Tony Award®), Gypsy (Tony Award®), Sweeney Todd (Tony Award®) and Blithe Spirit (Tony Award®). She appeared in over 60 motion pictures including Gaslight (Academy Award® Nomination), The Portrait of Dorian Gray (Academy Award® Nomination) and The Manchurian Candidate (Academy Award® Nomination). In 1991 she was the voice of Mrs. Potts in Disney’s animated feature, Beauty and the Beast. She made television history starring as Jessica Fletcher on “Murder, She Wrote,” the longest-running detective drama series in TV history, winning four of her six Golden Globe® Awards. In 2013 she was awarded an Oscar® for Lifetime Achievement in Motion Pictures. She was named a Dame of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. Lansbury passed away peacefully in 2022 at age 96.

LINDA WOOLVERTON (Book). Linda Woolverton’s first animated feature, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991) won the Golden Globe for the Best Comedy/Musical and became the first animated film to be nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award®. Woolverton cowrote the screenplay for The Lion King animated feature, rewrote the script for Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey and contributed to the animated feature Mulan. She went on to adapt the script of Beauty and the Beast for the Broadway stage and received the Tony Award® nomination for Best Book of a Musical in 1994. Woolverton was also awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for Beauty and the Beast for Best New Musical in the UK. Beauty and the Beast ran in New York between 1994 and 2007, becoming the sixth longest running show in Broadway history. Woolverton also wrote the Book for Elton John and Tim Rice’s Musical Aida which ran for five years at the Palace. Woolverton’s script for Alice in Wonderland (2010), directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, grossed over one billion dollars and she became the first female screenwriter with a sole credit on a billion-dollar film. From there she wrote the screenplay for Disney’s Maleficent (2014) starring Angelina Jolie which became a worldwide success. HOWARD ASHMAN (Lyricist) is best known as the pivotal creative mind behind The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast (which is dedicated to “Our friend, Howard Ashman, who gave a Mermaid her voice and a Beast his soul…”). Ashman’s first love was theatre. He was a founder of Off Off-Broadway’s renowned WPA Theatre, where he conceived, wrote and directed the classic musical Little Shop of Horrors as well as God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater (both music by Alan Menken). A new cast recording of Rosewater is available from Sh-K-Boom records. In 1986, Ashman wrote and directed the Broadway musical Smile (music by Marvin Hamlisch). Lamented as a lost treasure of the 1980’s theatre scene, Smile remains popular on high school and college campuses. THE THEATER

A fully restored 1929 “movie palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,665 seats, is a multipurpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballets, comedies, concerts, movies and private corporate events.

PRIVATE EVENTS

The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, accommodating 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. TICKET OFFICE HOURS

Ticket Office hours are Friday 10:00 AM-5:00 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM-3:00 PM. The ticket office will open approximately 3 hours before doors on show days. Doors to the Fox Theatre open one hour before showtime. Tickets for all performances may be purchased online at www.foxtheatre.org, or by calling 855-285-8499, or visiting the Fox Theatre Ticket Office during the times listed above.

GROUP SALES

In accordance with the Fulton County Clean Air Ordinance, the Fox Theatre is a smoke-free facility. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas.

ABOUT ACCESSIBILITY

ELEVATORS

Elevators are at the north end of each lobby and are available during all performances. They make it possible to access each lobby without using the stairs. Patrons should be aware that access to upper seating areas do involve stairs.

PARKING

Parking is available within a four-block radius in all directions of the Fox Theatre. Advanced reserved parking is available for sale at the Fox Ticket Office or by calling 855-285-8499. The Fox Theatre assumes no responsibility for vehicles parked in any of the privately owned lots operating in the Fox Theatre district.

PERFORMANCE NOTES

All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket to be admitted to the theater. Not all events are suitable for children. Infants will not be admitted to adult programs/ performances. Parents will be asked to remove children who create a disturbance.

• Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of management in conjunction with the wishes of the producers.

• Please turn off all pagers and cellphones before each performance.

• Camera and recording devices are strictly prohibited. Backstage employees are represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E.)

MARQUEE CLUB PRESENTED BY LEXUS

A stunning 10,000 square feet of exclusive space located on the northeast side of the theatre, the Marquee Club has access to the fabulous rooftop terrace overlooking the iconic Fox marquee and Peachtree Street. The Marquee Club is the perfect way to elevate your experience at the Fox. The club can be accessed through one of the annual membership options or on a per-event basis, as space allows. FOX FUN FACTS

EVERY VENUE HAS TRADITIONS. FEW HAVE A MANTRA.

“Play It Pretty for Atlanta” is a phrase that lives quietly behind the scenes at the Fox Theatre and carries enormous weight for those who pass beneath it. Its origin traces back to a legendary moment in Fox history. In 1976, while recording the album One More from the Road live at the Fox Theatre, Lynyrd Skynyrd frontman Ronnie Van Zant turned to his band onstage during “Free Bird” and said, “play it pretty for Atlanta.” The words weren’t scripted, but they landed. That performance would become iconic, and the band later directed proceeds from their Fox performances to support the Save the Fox campaign, helping ensure the theatre’s survival.

Over time, “Play It Pretty for Atlanta” evolved into a quiet ritual. At its core, the phrase is rooted in respect. Respect for the artists who step onto this stage. Respect for the crews who work tirelessly to make each show seamless. And respect for a city whose audiences are passionate and deeply connected to live performance. To play the Fox is to be welcomed into that relationship and to rise to it.

For Atlanta, it’s an affirmation. For performers, it’s a challenge. For the Fox, it’s a reflection of who we are: a place where performance is treated with care, intention, and reverence.

To “play it pretty” doesn’t mean perfection. It means giving your best to the music, to the moment, and to the city that’s listening.
