Welcome to the underground! Or rather, to your new artistic home.
For the past two years, we’ve been busy digging and busy building. For years before that, we were busy dreaming. About possibilities. About our promise to this city. About making access to theater a birthright for every child in our community.
With the opening of the Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families and the accompanying Imagine Endowment, we are about to make that dream a reality. But the missing ingredient is you! Your presence and willingness to join us on this journey completes the vision.
So thank you for joining us for the inaugural season in this sacred space. It’s here that we cultivate awe, inviting everyone to experience the vastness of what’s possible. It’s why we’re christening this theater with not one but three unique stories so you can return again and again to discover new worlds coexisting underground, new possibilities emerging from impossible situations. It’s here where even a naked mole rat can dare to get dressed. Where a tiny bunny can summon the courage to face a giant human. Where a baby ant can conquer his greatest and most existential fear. It’s here that you are welcome every day of the week to experience stories that inspire curiosity, wonder, and increase a sense of hope for what’s possible.
Thank you for joining us for this subterranean celebration. We look forward to excavating new worlds with you!

BREAKING GROUND IN THE UNDERGROUND
A Conversation about the Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families with Jennings Hertz
Artistic Director Christopher Moses
STORY BY Ashley Elliott
When asked about the new Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director Christopher Moses is quick to continue to reference something he’s been saying for years — that the new theater space will advance his vision for theater being a “birthright” for every Atlanta resident.
“The promise of the Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families,” he says, “is to become a consistent resource for young people and educators in our community. For far too long, we have asked the busiest people in our community to bend their schedules to fit our production calendar. Now we are upending how we produce. We were trying to make it as easy as possible for people to experience this work because we now know the benefits and — now that we know that theater can help create more inspired, thoughtful, hopeful, and connected human beings — it’s up to us to scale those benefits far and wide.”
The Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families officially broke ground on August 6, 2024, but the idea was conceptualized long before. The vision for the Goizueta Stage was always to be a transformative space for the Alliance’s youngest patrons, featuring thoughtfully-curated, year-round programming by the Alliance and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The programming will be supported by the Imagine Endowment, a capital campaign that was launched in tandem with the groundbreaking.
“That’s what’s allowing us to have such low ticket prices for these shows,” Moses explains about the Imagine Endowment, “which is less than a third of what other theaters across the country would be charging.” Moses also acknowledges that
transportation is also a factor that sometimes inhibits school groups from attending shows, which is why the Alliance began offering bus reimbursement for qualified schools. “It’s about relying on us,” Moses continues. “We know how important this art form can be on a young person’s development, and now we’ve got to do all we can so that as many kids as possible are experiencing it.”
The project was designed with young people in mind, conceptualized in tandem with the architects on the project, Perkins&Will. In addition to utilizing information the Alliance’s Education Department has gathered over years of research, key stakeholders met with Dr. Walter Gilliam, a leading child psychologist, to ensure that the creativity of youth was respected and kept in mind at every stage of the design. “Even the way you enter the theater rewards curiosity,” Moses continues, “and invites you [to enter] in a way that you might not expect. It’s sophisticated. It’s not a condescending design. ... It also communicates to the world that young people are not just welcome here, but that we actually built this place with them in mind. The fact that it’s on the front of our building on Peachtree, the main thoroughfare, I think is such a fantastic statement to the rest of this city and to the rest of the world. My sincerest hope is that it inspires other large cultural organizations to go and do the same.”
One of the observations Dr. Gilliam made that was integrated into the design of the space is the fact that younger children like to be “close to the action” — closer to the stage than seats are often placed. “That’s what prompted us to have these scissor lift seats,” Moses says. “Each row can depress into the floor, and we can put cushions on top so that the youngest ones can be up close less hindered by traditional theater seats. That’s also why we went with the bench seating as well; it can accommodate young people who may want to sprawl out or sit up next to their parent or caregiver.”
Another observation that Dr. Gilliam brought to the ideation phase is that young people love to see their older selves to get a feel for what they might expect as

they begin to grow up. This led to the construction of the PNC PlaySpace on the front of the building, which offers a unique space for unstructured play that also contains space for rotating art installations. “I love that image of a one- or twoyear-old in the PlaySpace, which is open for free six days a week,” Moses explains. “Through encouraging this unstructured play and again, we’re rewarding curiosity, creativity, and [those children] can see a five-, six-, or seven-year-old walking into the theater, knowing that’s their trajectory. Really starting to build this culture of growing up here at the Alliance from the moment you were born. You’re there playing in this cool, creative Amazon rainforest installation, and then, a few years down the road, you’re regularly coming into the Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families. And then, twenty years down the road, who knows? Maybe you’re going to the Hertz Stage or the Coca-Cola Stage. It’s starting to build this ownership over both the art form of theater and this arts center where it really does feel like it belongs to you simply by growing up in Atlanta.”
When asked about the programming for the Goizueta Stage, Moses gets excited, eager to explain the inspiration behind the three shows opening the space. Two have been produced on Alliance stages before — Into the Burrow: A Peter Rabbit™ Tale and Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Rock Experience. The former was produced in the round on the Hertz Stage in 2023 and ran for three months (a sort of case study of what an extended run could look like on the Goizueta Stage) and the latter opened in early 2020 and had just four performances before it closed due to the pandemic. The third show, The Great Ant Sleepover, is based on a book that was commissioned as part of the Mayor’s Summer Reading Club and was distributed to over 20,000 kids in Atlanta. When it clicked that all three stories took place underground, the idea of The Underground Rep almost wrote itself.
“We knew we wanted to try something new and different because that’s what this moment called for,” Moses explains. “We had these three stories that all could share similar real estate and then we started dreaming about the whole notion of [how we are] digging up and getting to the foundation of who we are and we thought about how fun it would be to create this concept of while we were digging and constructing this new theater, we happened across this whole underground world — these three different stories that are sharing the same ecosystem. ... To reinforce that notion that families could come back again and again — to come for a weekend and see three different shows in the new theater.”
The idea of creating a repertory of actors — six actors who would all play different roles in each show — came soon after, which responded to the need of the local acting community and provide Atlanta actors consistent work for seven months. At least two actors are able to join Actors’ Equity due to the long-term nature of the contract and finally get all of the benefits that come with membership, including health insurance.
At the end of it all, this space is just a beginning — a beginning for the Atlanta community of actors, a beginning for the next generation, and a beginning for what theater for youth and families could look like.
“We will make theater a birthright,” concludes Moses. “That is the promise of this stage.”
Help the little rabbit find a safe road to his family. Beware of predators!

CHRISTOPHER MOSES (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) has been working in professional theatre for twenty years and in 2022 was given the Governor’s Award for Arts in Humanities for his body of work. In January of 2011, Chris took on the position of Director of Education at the Alliance Theatre, overseeing the Alliance Theatre Institute (twice recognized as an Arts Model by the Federal Department of Education), Theatre for Youth & Families, and the Acting Program. Since taking over this position, Chris has expanded the reach and impact by making the Alliance Theatre Education department a vital resource for advancing the civic agenda of Atlanta. This work is accomplished through deep and sustained partnerships with social service organizations throughout the city. Under his leadership, the Alliance launched its Kathy & Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young program, which provides fully interactive professional theater experiences for children of all abilities from ages newborn through five years old; the Alliance Teen Ensemble, which performs world premiere plays commissioned for and about teens; the Palefsky Collision Project, where teens produce a new work after colliding with a classic text; expanded the Alliance’s summer camp program to include over 3,000 children in multiple locations across Atlanta; and Alliance@work, a professional development program designed for the business sector — the latest offering of which uses theatre practice to create a culture of civility in the workplace. In 2014, Chris added the title Associate Artistic Director, and has continued to expand the Alliance’s education offerings. During his tenure
in this position, the Alliance has produced over a dozen world premiere plays for young audiences, including Pancakes, Pancakes! by Ken Lin, The Dancing Granny by Jireh Breon Holder, Max Makes a Million by Liz Diamond, and The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Madhuri Shekar. Currently, the Alliance serves over 100,000 students pre-k—12 each season, as well as over 4,000 adults through its extensive education offerings. In 2023, he was named Artistic Director of the Alliance Theatre.
BRANDON KAHN (Managing Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2025 as Managing Director following his role as General Manager at Houston’s Alley Theatre since 2018. As General Manager, Brandon worked closely with the Artistic Director and Managing Director in handling the day-to-day operations of the Theatre. During his time at the Alley, Brandon focused on improving operational systems to enhance the workplace environment for all of those involved. Brandon was instrumental in multiple transfer productions from Born with Teeth that will play in the West End this fall, Cambodian Rock Band which was a multi-city co-production, and the recently announced Off-Broadway transfers of Thornton Wilder’s The Emporium and Torera. Brandon came to
the GM role from Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts, where he served over six seasons as Producing Manager, Associate Line Producer, and Resident Production Stage Manager. During his time at Williamstown, three productions moved to major New York City not-forprofits, including Martyna Majok’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Cost of Living, and five productions transitioned to Broadway. Prior to Williamstown, Brandon worked as a freelance stage manager for ten years where he worked on five Broadway shows, six Off-Broadway shows and many regional productions. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre Management and Producing from Columbia University. Additionally, Brandon has lectured at Columbia University and University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Brandon is on the Board and serves as Secretary for the League of Resident Theatres (LORT). He has served on multiple committees for LORT, including planning multiple conferences and serving as a mentor in the LORT EDI Mentorship Program. He completed the Business/ Civic Leadership Forum with the Center of Houston’s Future. His wife Jennifer is Founder of SCENERY BAGS, and they have two boys, Hudson and Judah.
Wonders to Treasure
Animals capture our imaginations. In stories, they are symbols, teachers of valuable lessons, and sources of inspiration. We can see ourselves in them, and yet we value the differences that set them apart — differences that make them special and superbly adapted for their environments. Their unique abilities and adaptations remind us of superpowers, earning our admiration, forging legends, and evoking awe, transcending cultures and generations.
From our earliest memories, animals often form the center of some of our first connections to a broader world outside ourselves. The roar of a lion, the bark of a dog, or the quack of a duck are among the first sounds we mimic. When we are children, they are in our cartoons. When we grow into readers, they are in our books.
Animals make us curious about the wild, whether on faraway continents or in our own backyards. They make us want to go outside, to explore, to discover, and to find adventure. They make us want to learn and share with others what we learn. Most of all, animals inspire us to protect the natural world they inhabit — a world of wonder and beauty made irreplaceable because they are in it.

Supporting young learners is brilliant for the community.
Welcome to the PNC PlaySpace.
Since 2015, we’ve supported the Woodruff Arts Center, which helps more than one million patrons annually experience the transformative power of the arts in metro Atlanta.
We believe in this community, and we’re proud to support the Arts Center’s mission to make arts education accessible to everyone, including young children.
Our support of the PNC PlaySpace provides exciting opportunities to make a positive impact. It’s a brilliant match for PNC Grow Up Great®, a $500 million, multi-year bilingual initiative that helps children develop a lifelong love of learning.
With the PNC PlaySpace on campus, children can explore the arts in imaginative ways through free play, engaging performances, interactive activities and more.
There’s so much for families to discover here.
We hope this space comes to feel like home and that your visit is nothing short of brilliant.

INTO THE BURROW: A PETER RABBIT™
TALE SYNOPSIS
All the neighborly forest animals have gathered in the rabbit’s den (under Mr. McGregor’s Garden) to throw a surprise party for Peter. And the biggest surprise of all – for the first time ever, they’ve invited you to join them! But the animals soon realize Mr. McGregor has terrible plans for the land around Peter’s burrow. Peter must face his fears and, together with his friends, gather a community to help save his home. Featuring beloved characters from the classic Beatrix Potter tales and a variety of original songs, this new tale encourages us to acknowledge our fears and work together to overcome challenges.
NAKED MOLE RAT: THE ROCK EXPERIENCE SYNOPSIS
Wilbur and all his fellow naked mole rats in the Tunnel have always been… naked. Wondering what other possibilities are out there, Wilbur discovers a love for clothing and style. When word of his new passion turns the Tunnel upside down, he proves to everyone that there’s no need to be just like everyone else.
Founded in 1968, Alliance Theatre is the leading producing theater in the Southeast, reaching more than 165,000 patrons annually. The Alliance is a recipient of the Regional Theatre Tony Award® for sustained excellence in programming, education, and community engagement. In January 2019, the Alliance opened its state-of-the-art performance space, The CocaCola Stage at Alliance Theatre. In January 2026, the Alliance opened the new Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families on the campus of the Woodruff Arts Center to expand its programming and commitment to excellent productions for family and student audiences of all backgrounds. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance has premiered more than 140 productions including eleven that have transferred to Broadway. The Alliance education department reaches more than 90,000 students annually through performances, classes, camps, and in-school initiatives designed to support teachers and enhance student learning. The Alliance Theatre values community, curiosity, collaboration, and excellence, and is dedicated to reflecting the cultural richness of Atlanta’s community with the stories we tell, the artists, staff, and leadership we employ, and the audiences we serve.
OUR MISSION
Atlanta’s national theater, expanding hearts and minds on stage and off.
OUR VISION
The Alliance Theatre will lead the national field by deeply engaging with its local community, modeling radical inclusion and catalytic experiences on our stages, in our classrooms, and throughout Atlanta.
Alliance Theatre Sets Wonder Free.
And what delights during performances ignites a brighter future. You can invest in better tomorrows by supporting access for youth to experience world-class theatre on a stage that’s all their own. Now is the time.
Introducing The Goizueta Stage For Youth And Families,
a transformative new space designed to inspire young audiences year-round. Research shows that early access to live theater can significantly combat critical issues like low literacy rates and the urgent youth mental health crisis. To fulfill this promise, the Alliance Theatre is launching a $10 million Imagine Endowment to expand our capacity to serve more young people and sustain these enriching experiences in perpetuity. With this endowment, the Goizueta Stage will be a beacon of accessibility, welcoming children from all backgrounds and removing economic, geographic, and physical barriers to ensure that every child can engage with the magic of theatre for generations to come.

Celebrating our supporters who have made a legacy gift to the Alliance Theatre.
The Legacy Society celebrates individuals who have made a planned gift to the Alliance Theatre. Making a planned gift is a wonderful way to show your support and appreciation for the Alliance Theatre and its mission, while accommodating your financial, estate planning and philanthropic goals. With smart planning, you may increase the size of your estate and/or reduce the tax burden on your heirs. Just as important, you will know that you have made a meaningful and lasting contribution to the Alliance Theatre.
