4 | betweenus Every now and then, a play comes along that refuses to leave you. Long after the lights come up, it continues asking something of you. Purpose is one of those plays. Branden Jacobs-Jenkins has written a remarkable story about a prominent Black family navigating the complicated inheritance of a civil rights legacy. It is fiercely intelligent, unexpectedly hilarious, emotionally bruising, and profoundly compassionate. It understands that families are rarely simple. They are where love and disappointment, admiration and resentment, pride and obligation all find themselves seated around the same dinner table. At its heart, Purpose asks a timeless question: What do we inherit? What do we carry forward? And what do we choose to leave behind? We couldn’t imagine a city better suited to hold that conversation than Atlanta. A city built on legacy. On civic leadership. On faith. On ambition. Here, history isn’t preserved behind glass. It lives in our families, our expectations, and the stories we tell around our dinner tables. That’s why it felt essential that this production be created by Atlanta artists—artists whose lives, voices, and experiences are woven into the fabric of this city. Artists who understand that this play isn’t simply about history. It’s about responsibility. About love. And about the courage to imagine what comes next. There is no more meaningful way for us to begin a season. Because every season is, in its own way, a promise. Every day, as Artistic Directors, we return to the very first word of our mission: Atlanta’s. That little apostrophe has become something of an obsession for us because it contains an entire philosophy of our work. Before we can belong to the national conversation, we must first belong to this city. Before we ask Atlanta to believe in us, we must first believe in Atlanta—in its artists, its audiences, and its stories. We believe the artists who call this city home deserve to create work of the highest ambition, deepest rigor, and greatest truth— work that begins here but resonates far beyond these walls. And perhaps that is our greatest purpose: to cultivate a home where artists flourish, audiences feel seen, and every story leaves the city we love a little more connected than it found us. KEITH ARTHUR BOLDEN TALKS PURPOSE, TIME AND INTENT STORY BY

I
n the opening scene of Purpose, Nazareth, the youngest of Solomon and Claudine Jasper, is alone. He launches into a monologue that begins with the words, “That morning...” You don’t quite know why he’s starting here, but eventually it will make sense.
This scene, in many respects, is a clue; it’s a sign that Naz (as he is called throughout the production) is setting the stage for…something. And, to some extent, this opening scene is a good example of the way Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, the playwright of Purpose, tells stories. He invites the audience in, says Keith Arthur Bolden. “He invites you into a home to explore these different dynamics of mostly familiar structures. We all like to pretend as though our families are perfect, and we’re perfect,” he says. “But Branden shows cracks, which I applaud.” For Bolden, who is directing the Alliance Theatre’s production, Jacobs-Jenkins accomplishes something that many of his contemporaries struggle to achieve. “He’s provocative without shock value. Some people don’t know how to be provocative without polarizing your audience. He has questions about humanity,” he says. “He doesn’t necessarily need to answer those questions, right? But he asks the questions he has about humanity in his work. He asks questions about the humanity of his characters in a grander sense that allows everyone to find themselves in each of the characters.” In Purpose we meet the Jasper family. They are gathering for a reunion that is long overdue. For decades the Jaspers have embodied what it means to be a virtuous and powerful Black political family. As ministers, activists, and changemakers, their legacy has shaped generations. Over the course of this one evening, this closely-knit family finds their familial bond and reputation in danger of being upended. When he was approached with the opportunity of being a part of this production, Bolden said he was presented with two options. He could either be a member of the cast. Or he could direct. He chose to direct. He’d been introduced to the playwright in 2010 when he was cast in the West Coast premiere of Jacobs-Jenkins’ play, Neighbors at The Matrix Theatre in Hollywood as Sambo, a member of the controversial Crow family who move in next door. When Purpose opened on Broadway 15 years later, Bolden didn’t hesitate to see it. After, he thought to himself, “I don’t know if I’ll get the chance to play Junior anytime soon, but when it comes up, I’ll definitely audition for it.” But when given a choice,

6 | encore something he said has never really been an option before in his career, directing was the obvious choice. “This play is my jam,” he said. “I just, I felt like I would enjoy helping people find the story more than being a part of the story. I can show up and move the chess pieces around. That’s where it really becomes fun. You know? I love being in a room and collaborating from every aspect. From the cast to stage management to the music. In total, Jacobs-Jenkins has written nine major professional plays. Of those nine, he’s received three Pulitzer Prize nominations in Drama (Gloria, Everybody, and Purpose) and won one for Purpose. In 2023, his play, Appropriate, received the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play and in 2025, Purpose was awarded the Tony Award for Best Play. What Bolden loves most about Purpose is that the play challenges us to ask who gets to define our purpose: our parents, our faith, our family’s legacy, or the quiet truth within ourselves. “I was raised in Los Angeles by Southern parents who gave me the church, gave me faith, and taught me that God would always be by my side. They also taught me that every life has purpose,” Bolden adds. “Our purpose in life is our driving force. Once you discover it, you can move forward with a certain freedom and clarity—as though you are finally on cruise control— because your steps are ordered and rooted in your truth.”

But, Bolden adds, the play isn’t just about purpose. It’s also about time. He hopes that after audiences see the production, they will walk away with a strong sense of intent. And not in a general sense. “I’m hoping that people become more aware,” he says. “I hope they will walk away being intentional about life, the choices they make, and the people they share life and time with. I hope they walk away taking stock of who they are and where they are in life, and where they want to go.”

MAYBE PURPOSE SERVES AS A REMINDER STORY BY

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Purpose is a play that lingers. It doesn’t simply ask what is your purpose, it asks who gave it to you? The Jasper family is introduced, carrying names rich with Biblical meaning. Solomon evokes the king known for his wisdom, leadership, and legacy. Nazareth recalls the place where Jesus was raised. Before these characters speak, their names carry the weight of history. They seem destined for significance. But names, the play reminds us, are only beginnings. Purpose is something we must live by. For example, Taylor Mills, Spelman Leadereship Fellow ask someone what a bee’s purpose is, and they’ll likely answer, “to make honey.” Yet honey is only part of its story. A bee’s greatest work happens quietly through sustaining ecosystems, nourishing communities, and making life possible in ways we rarely stop to notice. Its purpose is found not in what it produces, but in what it makes possible for others. Today, however, bee populations are declining. Habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change have placed extraordinary pressure on hives worldwide. Scientists tell us there is no single cause. A hive weakens when many burdens accumulate over time. Families are not so different. Like a hive, every family is an ecosystem. Every sacrifice, expectation, and act of grace shapes the lives of those within the family and around it. Legacies are not built in a single generation, nor are they unraveled by a single moment. They are formed slowly; through the choices we make and the stories we pass on. Perhaps that is what makes Purpose meaningful. It reminds us that purpose is not just word or title. It’s the quiet, daily work of becoming. It’s choosing who we are when legacy meets freedom, when expectation meets conviction, and when love asks us to grow. Maybe the most important question isn’t, what is my purpose? Maybe it’s, “What will flourish because I was here?”

18 | yourstoryyourstage Protecting Our Peace: The Importance of Valuing Mental Health and Wellness As a Black woman who is also a practicing licensed clinical mental health professional for over 25 years, I have come to witness first-hand how the conversations around Black mental health have shifted. For most of my professional life, conversations around Black mental health and mental illness felt stifled or taboo. However, attitudes began to change during the early stages of the pandemic and the concurrent protests around police brutality. Disclosures of anxiety, fear, depression, anger, grief and loss were unmasking a community that seemed adept at masking; a community that seemingly required nothing beyond fortitude and faith. For many that wasn’t enough. Millennials and Gen Z said, “It is not enough.” They wanted to talk about it…and they did. They shared their concerns and emotions. They demanded resources and guidance and transparency because people were suffering and dying. According to the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI.org) less than 40 percent of Black Americans are treated for a diagnosed mental illness compared to nearly 60 percent of white Americans. There are several contributing factors to the disparity in these statistics, including: access to care, distrust of healthcare professionals, and skepticism regarding the profession of psychology in general. There is also an unwritten rule of “keeping family business to ourselves.” I know from my professional practice that too often it took a crisis to bring many of my Black clients in for help/support/therapy. A crisis that was years in the making. It is my hope that preventative mental health efforts will help families avoid relational fractures and possible irreparable injury (emotional or physical). Our very legacy is rooted in resilience and survival tied to inexplicable and unjustifiable emotional and physical pain. Our collective healing process should be collaborative as well as personal. It should abandon the familial respectability politics that often leave family members feeling censored and minimized. Our collective healing should also include inter-generational participation. We must talk about mental health in order to reduce the stigmas that block us from being wholly human. Stigmas block progress and growth. We can all benefit from becoming educated about mental health because we cannot separate our mental health from our physical health. We can all benefit from learning how to “protect our peace.” We are all deserving of more peace.

The show opens with Viola Van Horn and her group of immortals sharing “a secret you would die for” by offering the audience a magic potion that grants eternal beauty and perfection (“If You Want Perfection”). Vain and self-absorbed actress Madeline Ashton performs in the Broadway show Me! Me! Me! (“For the Gaze”). She is visited by her old friend and struggling writer Helen Sharp, whom she frequently belittles and insults for her own amusement. However, Helen has one-upped Madeline by revealing she is engaged to famed plastic surgeon, Ernest Menville, and relishes the opportunity to get back at her frenemy (“That Was Then, This is Now”). Madeline invites the two over to her home, where she seduces Ernest (“Tell Me, Ernest”), steals him from Helen and ends up marrying him (“Madeline Ashton’s Intimate Wedding Extravaganza”), with Ernest promising during the wedding to stay “til death do us part” (“Ernest’s Real Vows”). Helen has a psychotic break and is forcibly committed to a mental hospital, where she obsesses over killing Madeline (“Madeline”).
