Basura begins with a question that feels both urgent and timeless: What happens when creativity becomes survival?
Inspired by the true story of a community living beside a landfill in Paraguay, this musical tells of young adults whose lives were shaped by scarcity—until one unlikely act of imagination changed everything. What began as a small moment of hope grew into something extraordinary—a youth orchestra built from instruments crafted out of discarded materials; a movement that would eventually resonate across the world.
When we first encountered this story, we recognized something familiar in its spirit. Despite taking place some 4,000 miles away, it felt like an Atlanta story. If there is one thing Atlanta understands deeply, it is the power of imagination to reshape destiny. Bringing it even closer to home, Basura arrives at the Alliance at a time when our theater itself is reshaping its vision for the future—a vision informed by the steadfast belief that arts can transform a young person’s development, and in turn, those young people can transform the world. As we open our new Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families—a space devoted to igniting imagination in the next generation—it feels profoundly fitting that we welcome a musical that celebrates the limitless potential of young people when they are given the tools to dream.
And then there is the music.
When this remarkable story caught the attention of global icon Gloria Estefan and her daughter Emily, they recognized its universal heartbeat. Together they created a score that pulses with rhythm, resilience, and joy! With a book by the brilliant Karen Zacarías, one of the most produced playwrights in the country, Basura brings together an extraordinary team of artists united by a shared belief in the transformative power of storytelling.
When the anxieties and tragedies of the world can make us feel hopeless, stories like this invite us to lean into what is still possible. They remind us that imagination can outgrow circumstance, that art can reshape community, and that even the smallest spark of creativity can reverberate far beyond the moment it begins.

BASURA: MAKING MUSIC FROM THE SCRAPS
Playwright Considers the Story of Basura a Universal Story, Especially for Atlanta

For most of us, we rarely give much thought to the things we throw away after we’ve tossed them. We rarely give a second thought to where it goes or ends up after it’s picked up by sanitation workers each week.
But for a community living in Asunción, Paraguay they haven’t had that luxury. With a landfill nearby, they were faced every day with what happens to the things we obliviously throw away. And as a result, they began to see value in the discarded. They, for all intents and purposes, understand the old saying, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”
Their story is at the core of the Alliance Theatre’s world premiere musical Basura.
According to book writer Karen Zacarías, Basura is inspired by the kids of Asunción and the 2015 documentary Landfill Harmonic. The documentary focuses on the kids of the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, the orchestra made up of the children of Asunción who perform using instruments constructed from the scraps of the Cateura landfill.
“What I love about this show and story is that throughout my entire career I’ve worked on social justice issues and especially with young people. I feel like this production brings together my love of theater, my love for young people, and my love of how theater helps make a change in the world,” said Zacarías.
In 2022, she had the privilege of visiting Asunción and spending time with the new generation of artists in the orchestra. The purpose of the trip wasn’t to just learn more about their story for the book, but to get a sense of their aura. She’d already met a few of them via Zoom. She instantly fell in love with the kids, the community, and their story.
“What we didn’t want is for people to come to the theater and just say, ‘Oh, look how resilient those poor kids are. Good for them,’ ” she said. “We want people to understand - these children living in a landfill are dealing with our garbage. And to think about the metaphor: what we as individuals throw away and who we throw away. And how can we
transform the garbage in our lives into something beautiful and positive.”
For Gloria Estefan, the story of Basura and the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura is a powerful one. She and her daughter Emily wrote the lyrics, music, and additional arrangements for the musical.
“It's multi-layered because it's not just the literal trash that we deal with throughout our lives all over the planet,” she said. “But also, the emotional baggage of garbage that we carry; the difficulties in life, no matter who you may be. The most incredible or to me, one of the most impactful things about the story in Basura, is that after they were able to travel and perform all over the world, to the Pope, for Queen Sofia of Spain with Metallica, the kids in the orchestra went back home and they transformed their communities.”
According to Zacarías, one of the biggest questions that keeps coming up is why the kids and their families didn’t just move away. First, she said there are economic implications.
“But, also, it's like asking us, ‘Why don't we move away from our planet?’ If we just can leave and move somewhere else, then we never deal with our garbage. At some point, we all have to learn how to make our homes better,” she said. “The idea of running away isn't an option. And, in fact, the more privilege we have, the more we run away and the more removed we are. Someone comes and picks up our trash and takes it far away, and we don't have to deal with it.”
Basura deals with all of that.
“The philosophy of the orchestra is the world gives us garbage, and we give back music,” she adds. “It's also an amazing testament of what the power of the arts does, to make you feel connected; to make you feel whole and how important the arts are for every

human being. It’s important to have access to something that makes you feel alive; to something that gives you soul. I feel very lucky that this story landed on my lap.”
Not only that, but also the importance of playing your part.
“What's interesting about an orchestra is you can have your personal relationship with your instrument, but when you're playing shoulder-to-shoulder with other people, your part matters. If you don't show up, the orchestra's not as good. It's not only about your personal development, but your personal responsibility. This idea that you're stronger together,” she adds. “That you owe it to yourself, your friends, your colleagues, your co-artists to show up.”
We all have our part to play. It’s a message Zacarías believes resonates with Atlanta audiences.
“Youth, music, and the commitment to building dreams are very big parts of the DNA of Atlanta,” she believes. “Basura will speak the language of Atlanta.”

IMPACTFUL THEATER BORN FROM REAL LIFE

In his 1889 essay, "The Decay of Lying: An Observation," Oscar Wilde writes “life imitates art more than art imitates life.” Wilde is arguing that life actually takes its cues from art. What we see is not what is actually there, but instead what artists have taught us to see through their work. For many of us, this seems contradictory to our intuitive assumption that art reflects life, that it is in response to the real world actions and emotions around us. After all, “art” is a man made creation, a fictionalized representation of the REALITY of life, right?
As paradoxical as Wilde’s quote may seem, it certainly rings true in the story of Landfill Harmonic, the documentary on which Basura is based. The film tells the story of a Paraguayan environmental engineer (and also a music teacher) Favio Chávez, who while working on a waste recycling project at the landfill of Cateura, gets to know the young people and families of the community. Mr. Chávez recognizes that 40 percent of the young people are not finishing school, and the challenge of growing up in Cateura is only made worse by the environmental tension.
Home to two million people, Paraguay’s capital of Asunción produces 1,500 tons of garbage daily. Almost all of this ends up in the landfill known as Cateura, which is seven miles south of Asunción in the floodplain of the Paraguay River. The area has no sewage system, running water is deficient, and the river continually threatens to flood. The landfill area is home to some 2,500 families, most of whom are living in extreme poverty, literally living in the middle of garbage.

lessons. Very quickly, there were more teenagers who wanted lessons than there were instruments, and the idea arose to recycle raw materials from the trash and transform them into musical instruments. Nicolás Gómez, a Cateura recycler, became a “trash magician,” using oil tin cans, forks, pieces of metal tubes, and bottle caps to create string and wind instruments. Every instrument that was cut and shaped from recycled materials provided more opportunity for the young people to dream of what was possible outside of their present circumstances. They learned to play Mancini, Mozart, and Beethoven, with a little rock and roll thrown in to the beat of a drumhead made out of an old X-ray.

And thus la Orquesta de Instrumentos Reciclados de Cateura was born. The orchestra began to travel within Paraguay and ultimately overseas, dazzling international audiences with the sweet music coming from this extraordinary group of young people. Prior to the release of the documentary Landfill Harmonic, the music school of Cateura opened its own building and still today provides a stimulating space where over 300 children and young people can develop their artistic and social skills while also acquiring essential tools to confront their environmental challenges.
Behind every great musical lies an even greater idea for a story, and wellmade documentaries are great source material for theater experiences. The documentary is seen through the lens of knowing the events and characters are not fictionalized, and this creates a terrific foundation of truth and a genuine willingness to invest in a suspension of disbelief when the story is adapted for the stage. The real life events behind the story of Basura encourage us to invest in young people, to get outside of our comfort zone, to understand that a life lived by embodying the compassion and resilience expressed by impactful theater, is a well-lived life indeed.

(Mónica) is an accomplished film, TV, stage actor, and author. She has starred on Broadway in the megahit Hamilton as Angelica Schuyler. She also originated Nina Rosario in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical In The Heights, for which she received a Drama Desk Award. Mandy also starred as Elphaba in the Broadway production of Wicked, blowing the roof off of New York’s Gershwin Theatre each night as she belted out the signature song "Defying Gravity." EMILY ESTEFAN (Music, Lyrics and Additional Arrangements) Emily Estefan is a Grammy-nominated musician, songwriter, producer, actress, and activist. She was a co-host on the Emmy-winning show "Red Table Talk: The Estefans" and co-host of the iHeartRadio podcast "In Our Own World," which was recognized as one of Spotify’s Best Podcasts of the Month. Estefan began playing instruments as a child, nurturing a deep-rooted passion for music that led her to earn a bachelor’s degree from the Berklee College of Music. She went on to write and release her debut album, "Take Whatever You Want," and founded her independent label, Alien Shrimp Records. Her work encompasses writing, producing, arranging, and performing, and she has appeared at major festivals such as SXSW and the Essence Festival, as well as prestigious stages including the Gershwin Prize and the Kennedy Center Honors. PATRICIA DELGADO (Choreographer) [she/her] first generation CubanAmerican, was born in Miami, Florida. She was a principal dancer with the Miami City Ballet where she worked for 20 years, and is currently a freelance artist and Tony award-winning choreographer living in NYC and a member of the dance faculty at The Juilliard School. She’s danced works by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor,
Anthony Tudor, Richard Alston, Edward Villella, as well as Coppelia, Giselle and Don Quixote and John Cranko's Romeo and Juliet. Patricia has created feature works with choreographers Alexei Ratmansky, Justin Peck, Pam Tanowitz, Jamar Roberts, Lauren Lovette, John Heginbotham, Andrea Miller and Jodi Melnick. She has performed at The Bolshoi, Theatre du Chatelet, Chicago Dancing Festival, Vail International Dance Festival, New York City Center, Joyce Theater, and at the Koch Theatre, Lincoln Center. She performed in the musical Brigadoon, directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon at Encores! She starred in the music video “The Dark Side of the Gym” for The National. As a repetiteur for Justin Peck she has worked with Boston Ballet, Ballet Arizona, Semperoper Ballet, ABT and NYCB. She was an Associate Producer on the 2020 Broadway revival of West Side Story and Associate Choreographer on the feature film West Side Story, directed by Steven Spielberg. She was named a “Mujeres Imparables” by Telemundo in February 2022. And is a member of the Advisory Committee at the Jerome Robbins Dance Division, New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. She cofounded and is artistic advisor of Adriana Pierce’s Queer the Ballet. She is the Co-Choreographer on Buena Vista Social Club, a new Broadway musical, and the recipient of the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Choreography for its Atlantic Theatre Production. She is devoted to creating a nurturing and positive environment of diversity, authenticity, inclusivity, vulnerability, and belonging in all that she embarks upon. During 16 years as dramaturg and literary manager at Disney Theatrical, he developed over 70 titles for Broadway, touring, international, and licensed productions, including Peter and the Starcatcher, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Freaky Friday, Newsies, The Little Mermaid, High School Musical, and Tarzan. He adapted several Disney
librettos for young performers and developed a new series of Marvel plays for teens. He also collaborated with Jeffrey Seller as Associate Director on the musical FLY at Dallas Theater Center and La Jolla Playhouse. Andy’s Broadway debut came earlier in his career when he played the role of Angel in the Tony Award–winning musical RENT, performing on Broadway, in London’s West End, and
on national and international tours. He was Associate Director to Michael Greif on the Off-Broadway revival, and directed productions in Tokyo, Seoul, and Havana—the latter inspiring the HBO Original Documentary Revolution Rent, which he directed. Andy directed the regional premiere of On Your Feet! at Actors’ Playhouse. She graduated from the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale and holds a B.A. from Shanghai Theatre Academy. FAVIO CHÁVEZ is the founder and director of the Orchestra of Recycled Instruments of Cateura, Paraguay - a project recognized worldwide for transforming waste from the Cateura landfill into musical instruments for the education of children in that community. A graduate in Environmental Sciences and Philosophy, as well as a music educator, Chávez was named one of the top 50 teachers in the world in 2020. He established this project 20 years ago to provide opportunities to children from vulnerable communities through music and inclusion. Under his leadership, the Orchestra has performed in 55 countries, conveying a powerful message of sustainability, creativity, and human potential. His work continues to inspire audiences around the globe and serves as the foundation for the musical Basura.
THE RECYCLED ORCHESTRA OF CATEURA is a world-renowned youth orchestra born from a landfill community in Asunción, Paraguay. Acclaimed for transforming trash into music, the orchestra creates instruments from
recycled materials collected in the same landfill community, under the leadership of Founder and Director Favio Chávez, whose defining words are: “The world sends us garbage; we send back music.” Since 2006, it has provided free music education to now more than 450 students annually. Its story has been featured in awardwinning documentaries and broadcast worldwide across five continents. The orchestra has toured globally, performing for royalty, popes, presidents, rock stars, Hollywood celebrities, schools, local communities, and underserved populations. MEETAI FILMS (Documentary Producer) is an independent production company dedicated to stories that illuminate the resilience of the human spirit. Its founder and Executive Producer, Alejandra Amarilla, conceived and championed Landfill Harmonic (2015), the company’s debut feature documentary — and to date, its sole feature-length nonfiction work. Joined by Executive Producer Rodolfo Madero, the team brought to life the story of the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a Paraguayan youth ensemble that plays instruments handcrafted from landfill waste. Landfill Harmonic earned over 30 international awards, screened at more than 100 festivals worldwide, and reached over 12 million viewers online. It is now the inspiration for this very stage.

JODY FELDMAN (Producer, Casting Director) began her theater career as an actress in Atlanta before moving into administration as the Assistant General Manager at Frank Wittow’s Academy Theatre. It was at the Academy that Jody realized the importance of theatre to a city’s cultural values and identity. Feldman started her career at the Alliance as casting director in 1991 and added producer to her title and responsibilities in 2001. She has cast and produced more than 250 productions at the Alliance, encompassing a range of world premieres that include The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry, Blues for An Alabama Sky by Pearl Cleage, The Geller Girls by Janece Shaffer, In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell Alvin McCraney, more than 20 years of Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition-winning plays, such world and regional premiere musicals as Aida; The Color Purple; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring It On: The Musical; Tuck Everlasting; Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; Harmony, A New Musical; The Prom; Trading Places, and finally exciting new plays developed specifically for children and families, which is integral to the expansion of audience and mission for the Alliance. Jody is most

TINASHE KAJESE-BOLDEN (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) began her tenure at the Alliance in 2016 as the BOLD Associate Artistic Director, assuming her current role in 2023. Originally from Zimbabwe, Kajese-Bolden combines her commitment to great art, deep education, and community empowerment with an agile enthusiasm and unflappable, calm energy to inspire new possibilities. KajeseBolden honed her directing and producing skills as a freelance director working in regional houses across the country and on set. As a director and actor, she fosters deep ongoing collaborations with playwrights and has mounted innovative and critically acclaimed productions that merge elegant, theatrical designs with complicated human stories. A Princess Grace Award 2019 Winner for Directing, and Map Fund Award recipient as a director and actor, she has worked on and Off-Broadway as well as recurring roles in the Marvel universe “Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special,” Suicide Squad, “Hawkeye,” and CW’s “Valor,” “Dynasty,” HBO’s “Henrietta Lacks,” Ava Duverney’s “Cherish the Day,” among others. Up next, she is developing a new Opera, Forsythe is Flooding: The Joy of Lake Lanier, and proudly serves on the ARTS-ATL Artist Advisory Council. “My mission is the pursuit of what connects our different communities and how we create art that liberates us to imagine a more inclusive future.”
CHRISTOPHER MOSES (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) has been working in professional theatre for 20 years and in 2022 was given the Governor’s Award for Arts in Humanities for his body of work. In January 2011, Chris took on the position of Director of Education at the Alliance Theatre, overseeing the Alliance Theatre Institute (twice recognized as an Arts Model by the Federal Department of Education), Theatre for Youth & Families, and the Acting Program. Since taking over this position, Chris has expanded the reach and impact by making the Alliance Theatre Education department a vital
resource for advancing the civic agenda of Atlanta. This work is accomplished through deep and sustained partnerships with social service organizations throughout the city.Under his leadership, the Alliance launched its Kathy & Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young program, which provides fully interactive professional theater experiences for children of all abilities from ages newborn through five years old; the Alliance Teen Ensemble, which performs world premiere plays commissioned for and about teens; the Palefsky Collision Project, where teens produce a new work after colliding with a classic text; expanded the Alliance’s summer camp program to include over 3,000 children in multiple locations across Atlanta; and Alliance@work, a professional development program designed for the business sector—the latest offering of which uses theatre practice to create a culture of civility in the workplace. In 2014, Chris added the title Associate Artistic Director, and has continued to expand the Alliance’s education offerings. During his tenure in this position, the Alliance has produced over a dozen world premiere plays for young audiences, including Pancakes, Pancakes! by Ken Lin, The Dancing Granny by Jireh Breon Holder, Max Makes a Million by Liz Diamond, and The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Madhuri Shekar. Currently, the Alliance serves over 100,000 students pre-k through 12 each season, as well as over 4,000 adults through its extensive education offerings. In 2023, he was named Artistic Director of the Alliance Theatre.
BRANDON KAHN (Managing Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2025 as Managing Director following his role as General Manager at Houston’s Alley Theatre since 2018. As General Manager, Brandon worked closely with the Artistic Director and Managing Director in handling the day-to-day operations of the Theatre. During his time at the Alley, Brandon focused on improving operational systems to enhance the workplace environment for all of those involved. Brandon was instrumental in multiple transfer productions from Born with Teeth that will play in the West End this fall, Cambodian Rock Band which
was a multi-city co-production, and the recently announced Off-Broadway transfers of Thornton Wilder’s The Emporium and Torera. Brandon came to the GM role from Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts, where he served over six seasons as Producing Manager, Associate Line Producer, and Resident Production Stage Manager. During his time at Williamstown, three productions moved to major New York City notforprofits, including Martyna Majok’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Cost of Living, and five productions transitioned to Broadway. Prior to Williamstown, Brandon worked as a freelance stage manager for 10 years where he worked on five Broadway shows, six Off-Broadway shows and many regional productions. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre Management and Producing from Columbia University. Additionally, Brandon has lectured at Columbia University and University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Brandon is on the Board and serves as Secretary for the League of Resident Theatres (LORT). He has served on multiple committees for LORT, including planning multiple conferences and serving as a mentor in the LORT EDI Mentorship Program. He completed the Business/ Civic Leadership Forum with the Center of Houston’s Future. His wife Jennifer is Founder of SCENERY BAGS, and they have two boys, Hudson and Judah. “Dynasty,” HBO’s “Henrietta Lacks,” Ava Duverney’s “Cherish the Day,” among others. Scraplanta Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit that makes art more accessible to the greater Atlanta community through our art supply thrift stores, sliding scale craft workshops, and waste diversion program. Scraplanta is proud to operate three locations for the general public to shop for gently used craft supplies at a discounted rate.
The combined efforts of our passionate team of staff, volunteers, artists, and community members have empowered us to successfully divert over 260,000 pounds of art supplies from the landfill! We are also proud to collaborate with schools, nonprofits, artists, and local organizations to expand our reach and deepen our impact.
Whether you are interested in sewing, book binding, or jewelry, Scraplanta is a resource for developing sustainable art practices. Through our workshops, we demonstrate how amazing art can be created from scraps! Our art workshops are hosted by local artists and educators who are eager to share their skills with the community. All the workshops have a sliding-scale price model—we treat all participants the same, no matter what price they choose! At Scraplanta, we believe that when we remove barriers for artists, the community can use art as a tool for healing, liberation, financial freedom, and joy.

What do you do when the world gives you nothing? You build something beautiful.
Basura tells the extraordinary true story of a group of resilient students, and their unlikely music teacher, who share a seemingly unreachable dream of starting an orchestra. At the center is Nambi, a hardworking young adult who discovers a profound, hidden gift the moment she first holds a violin. When the students find themselves without actual instruments to play, they must rely on their imagination and ingenuity to repurpose discarded materials. License plates and paint cans become violins with forks as their tailpieces, oil drums are transformed into colorful cellos, and drainpipes reimagined as saxophones. Together they create instruments that are nothing short of magnificent and against impossible odds they transform themselves into a celebrated orchestra that travels the world. Basura is a vivid, heart-swelling story based on the journey of Paraguay's Recycled Orchestra and the documentary film Landfill Harmonic.
