Why The Real Tweenagers of Atlanta? Does this play have anything to do with “The Real Housewives” television reality series? This play should bear very little resemblance to the series although in “reality” the titles may have been assigned for similar reasons. In the way that housewives often feel their lives are not accurately defined by the word “housewife”— a so-called “tweenager” is apt to feel the same way about himself or herself. If you look up “real” in the dictionary, synonyms include “genuine,” “authentic” and the phrase: “not to be taken lightly.” Hmmm. Respect is at issue here. This is the third season that the Alliance Theatre has delved into the very neglected but fascinating culture that is the world of the tween by presenting an original play that directly reflects their experiences. I have nothing but respect for what they deal with on a daily basis — from trying to find a place in the lunch room where you are free from bullies to joining the right club or surviving CRCT testing. Throughout the past three years I have had the great privilege and pleasure of speaking to and reading the writings of hundreds of tweens. They are an eclectic, entertaining and profound group of people. Here is a little sample of what they have to say. The following was penned by Riley Schatz in an Alliance Acting Class: I feel real when I read a book and I am sucked into another world full of color. I feel real when people say “good job.” I feel real when I’m holding a guitar, ready to play before a recital or at home for myself or family or friends. I feel real when I get good grades or do better than I think. I feel real on a snowy day with my neighbors, sipping hot chocolate or when in the pool completely immersed in water. I feel real sitting around a campfire. I feel real when I say — “That’s my Dad or Mom or Sister.” I feel real on my birthday or when I lose a tooth. I feel real when I feel loved. Thank you for visiting us here at the “Assembly” and for caring about what goes on in the minds and hearts of tweens.

s anyone who has ever done it knows all too well, raising a tween [ages 10-14] can be challenging. But being a tween can be equally difficult, if not more so. There are few directors in Atlanta better suited to tackling a production about the trials and tribulations of the middle-school crowd than Rosemary Newcott, the Alliance Theatre’s award-winning Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth & Families. She recently spoke about her inspiration for The Real Tweenagers of Atlanta, what she learned about tweens in the process of creating the show, and what she hopes audiences will take away from the production. What were the inspirations behind the show’s concept?

Outside of the title, The Real Housewives reality-TV series does not inform this production. The inspiration comes from the fact that the middle-school years are eternally challenging. These young people are trying to find their own

identities in a world that treats them one moment as a child and the next as an adult. Despite the challenges and amount of angst, middle-school people are also extremely funny, as the plight of “being between” can elicit some strange and surprising behavior. What were the unique challenges of The Real Tweenagers of Atlanta?

We’ve presented in this [student assembly] format for two years and discovered that as long as we approach the characterizations with integrity, the audience is willing to go along with us on the journey. The conceit is that the audience is seated at a school assembly. Four student representatives have been charged to conduct the assembly — in this case leading an exploration of what it means to be a “real tweenager.” The biggest challenge of playing for a middle-school audience is that what you are presenting must honestly connect to them. So as we create the show, we need to keep a mind to what makes this group of young people tick.

What were the most surprising revelations from those interactions?

I’ve read that the show was built on interviews with tweens. What was that process like, and how did you get the kids to feel comfortable talking openly about their lives?

There is a nomination form available on our website, so anyone of any age can “nominate” a real tween. A group of real tweens is selected by a panel and “honored” at the opening day of the show. [To create the show], we conduct workshops wherein the cast and [those] middle-schoolers interact by playing improvisational games, and we conduct question-and-answer sessions. Tweens’ knowledge of what is happening in the newsworthy world beyond them varies widely but, when they are aware of what’s going on, their opinions are strong. And Justin Beiber is still popular! What are the central messages you hope audiences will take away from this show?

There are a few. The definition of “real” can vary. Accepting differences can lead to mutual respect, or a better personal understanding of others. Laughing, even when stuff is painful, can be healthy, or at least temporarily ease the pain. And no matter how old we are, we are always “between” one age and another. DANIELLE DEADWYLER (August March) makes her Alliance debut in The Real Tweenagers of Atlanta, though she was seen in the Alliance/Kendeda reading series in Olympic Village. Atlanta credits: Normal Jean, Kid and LaWanda in The Colored Museum (True Colors); Fannie Mae in Shakin’ the Mess Outta Misery (Horizon); Lady in Yellow in for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf (True Colors). AMY RADEBAUGH (Stage Manager) is overjoyed to be working as the stage manager for The Real Tweenagers of Atlanta. She is currently enjoying her third season at the Alliance. Favorite shows include apprentice stage manager of August: Osage County and production assistant for Mulan, Honk and Middle School the Musical. She would like to thank her Atlanta family, Liz for showing her the way, and her Mom and Padre for always supporting her. Jody Feldman (Associate Producer) has been the head of casting for the Alliance Theatre since 1991. She has cast more than 200 LORT B, D and TYA productions for the Alliance, including a wide range of classical, contemporary and world premiere dramas and musicals. She has worked with such directors as Susan V. Booth, Kenny Leon, David H. Bell, Kent Gash, Doug Hughes, Gary Griffin, Molly Smith and Andy Blankenbuehler. Since the Alliance is a center for new play development and productions, Jody has cast a large number of new plays including The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry, Flyin’ West and Blues for an Alabama Sky by Pearl Cleage, In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell McCraney, and world premiere musicals such as Aida, The Color Purple, Sister Act: The Musical, and Bring It On: The Musical. Jody also serves as the casting director for Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company and is working as Atlanta casting director for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Tribute in Washington, D.C., and the feature film Charming the Hearts of Men. about the alliance theatre Susan V. Booth (Jennings Hertz, Jr. Artistic Director) Susan joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001. Over the past nine seasons, she has initiated the Collision Project for teens, the Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, created local producing partnerships and overseen regional collaborative productions, as well as commercial partnerships on projects including The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in Da’ Noise, Bring in Da’ Funk; and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL, which she also directed. As a director, she has worked nationally at theatres including Goodman,

La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern Universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern and DePaul Universities, and serves as adjunct faculty with Emory University. She is the past president of the board of directors for Theatre Communications Group (the national service organization for the field), is on the artistic board of the Steinberg Charitable Trust in New York, and serves on the board of the Metro Atlanta Arts and Culture Coalition. Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. In 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta Children’s Theatre (1929) to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. In 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. 32. Everything is funny to them. 33. They’re unpredictable. 34. They have great conversation skills. 35. They sometimes enjoy my corny stories and jokes. 36. They’re unorganized, but manageable. 37. They are helpful and kind. 38. They can be molded in spite of the “hate-all-grown-ups attitude.” 39. The light in their eyes still shines. 40. You never know what will come out of their mouths next. And the 41st thing teachers think is great about teaching middle schoolers… 41. There’s never a dull moment!

Rita Rudner must have had adolescents in mind when she said, “My husband and I are either going to buy a dog or have a child. We can’t decide whether to ruin our carpet or ruin our lives.” Middle school youngsters earn some of the barbs aimed at them — because sometimes they act more like second graders than seventh graders! But one must realize that students in the middle grades are in that strange world between childhood and adolescence. Their minds, emotions and bodies are changing. And these changes are on a large scale. Ed Feldstein found his dream profession after college, teaching middle school social studies in Harlem (New York City) and New City, N.Y., Montclair, N.J., and Kennesaw, Ga. He also taught education at two colleges.
