Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts: Celebrating the Unique Spirit of Encinitas

Our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department exists to strengthen the heart of our community. Every park we maintain, every class or program we offer, and every cultural experience we create is designed to bring people together, support healthy lifestyles, and celebrate the unique spirit of our city. We are proud to share this Fall Activity Guide as an essential resource for our entire community. It connects you to everything we offer and reflects our commitment to enhancing community life where everyone belongs.

This guide highlights the many ways to enjoy the autumn season with us. Inside, you will find opportunities for all ages. Youth can explore a variety of programs, from outdoor adventures to creative arts. Adults and families will discover classes, events, and experiences that bring people together and help you make the most of our parks, beaches, trails, and cultural spaces. If you enjoy music, be sure to check out our uninstructed group music sessions at the Pacific View Arts Center. For community members aged 50 and older, our “Artventures Day Trips” continue this fall with transportation from the Encinitas Community and Senior Center to destinations such as the Phantom of the Opera.

This fall is especially meaningful as Encinitas celebrates its 40th anniversary. To honor this milestone, we invite you to join our Back to the 80s themed celebration on Saturday, October 3. It is a fun way to recognize the decade our city was founded and to celebrate four decades of creativity, connection, and coastal character.

Activities are subject to change. A full refund will be given if the City cancels the activity.

Refund requests submitted in writing to prca@encinitasca.gov at least seven (7) calendar days before the first program meeting date may be granted minus a $20 cancellation fee, $10 for senior programs. ActiveNet debit/credit card convenience fees are non-refundable.

This is a wonderful opportunity to have a certified American Medical Response (AMR) child passenger safety technician conduct a free car seat check to help keep your littlest passengers safe.

Family Music (Level 1) (ages 6m–2y 11m)

This sequential music program patterns musical learning after language-learning, using Montessori teaching techniques. Activities bridge the natural connection between music and movement and stimulate the brain, encourage motor, verbal and social skills. Class encourages joyful music making through percussion instruments, dancing, scarves, hoops, and engaging songs. Parent or caregiver must be present. Children build musical skills joyfully, learning solfege, rhythm language, and steady beat, with many opportunities to train their musical ear and sing solos as part of singing games. Teen DJ Academy (ages 15–18)

Learn the art of mixing and performing music using professional DJ controllers and software. SPECIAL INTERESTS

Community Cycling Bike/E-bike Safety & Skills (ages 10+)

In our class, offered in partnership with the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, you will learn the rules of the road and practice essential bike riding skills with a trained bike instructor. Topics covered include where to ride, best practices, emergency maneuvers, legal rights and responsibilities. The 3-hour class is broken up into 3 parts: lecture, skills drills, and a guided road ride to put your new skills into action! Class content applies to both regular and e-bikes.

Please come ready with the bicycle/e-bike that you regularly ride. Be sure that your bike is in good working order. Don’t forget to double check the chain, brakes, and tire air pressure. Wear a properly fitted helmet, closed toe sneakers, and athletic clothing that is safe to ride in and weather appropriate. Please bring a water bottle and snack. Some cycling experience is required as this is not a "learn-to-ride" class. If under 16, parent registration and participation strongly encouraged. Child and Babysitter Safety (ages 11–17)

Child and Babysitter Safety class is a community education program for youth ages 11-17 that covers child safety and basic care for infants and children. Topics covered include sitter safety, infant and child feeding, diapering procedures, recognizing an emergency, child and infant CPR, and basic first aid for children. Participants receive a digital download of the booklet and a babysitter certificate from the American Health & Safety Institute as well as an Infant/Child CPR certificate of participation upon completion. Instructor, Sue Lockhart, has been training babysitters in San Diego for 30 years. Please bring a water bottle and light snack.

Children's Manners Classes Level 1 (ages 5–11)

Our four-week program is designed to instruct children in the fundamentals of social etiquette and courteous behavior. Participants will acquire social skills crucial for forging positive relationships and engaging in effective communication with others. The course will utilize interactive activities, role-playing, and discussions to facilitate the practical application of these skills in everyday scenarios.

This program provides students with a supportive and structured environment to complete homework, strengthen academic skills, and build confidence as learners. Sprouting Science Chefs (ages 5–11)

STEM Meets YUM! Explore a new herb each week through gardening, science, and simple cooking activities. Participants plant, discover, and create delicious herb inspired recipes while learning the science of growing food. Each child takes home the featured herb of the week to plant and enjoy at home, along with plenty of ideas for continued exploration and discovery.

Chess Club (ages 6–12)

Planting Seeds Chess Enrichment Program is designed to support players of all skill levels, from beginners learning the fundamentals to experienced tournament competitors refining advanced strategies. Lessons are tailored to each child's abilities, helping students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, concentration, and strategic planning skills while improving their game. Instructors create a fun and interactive learning environment using a variety of teaching tools, including demonstration boards, computer-based tutorials, worksheets, storytelling, and famous historical chess games. Whether your child plays casually or competitively, this enriching program provides the challenge, support, and encouragement needed to build confidence and achieve continued success in chess.

Have you ever wanted to play the nationally-known game Dungeons and Dragons? Stretch your imagination telling stories with your friends, and build useful creative skills? What about play the game they do in Stranger Things? Well this is your chance! In this class, we'll be exploring collaborative storytelling through Dungeons and Dragons. Along the way, we'll develop social and emotional skills that will serve us well outside of the RPG.

Friday Finale (6th - 8th Grade)

Celebrate the best day of the week at Friday Finale, the afterschool spot where middle schoolers kick off the weekend in style! Starting January, early- release Friday brings a new wave of fun, think epic games, creative challenges, music vibes, tasty treats, and surprise mini-events that change week to week. It’s the perfect place to shake off the school week, laugh with friends, and start your weekend with something awesome. When the final bell rings, Friday Finale is the place to be!

This camp combines dodgeball, capture the flag, hide and seek, and paintball simulation into a fun, fast-paced, adrenaline rushing game. Participants learn team work, strategy, and good sportsmanship. Physical fitness benefits include building speed, agility, coordination, and throwing accuracy. The game is played with inflatable obstacles used for ducking, dodging and hiding.

This camp is dedicated to our next generation of surfers and ocean lovers that are just getting ready to hit the ocean. Our focus is ocean safety, surfing, boogie boarding, bodysurfing, and swimming in the ocean. We allow kids to progress at their own pace in this camp, not pushing them past their comfort level. Big Groms Fall Break Surf Camp (ages 9–16)

This surf camp teaches proper surfing fundamentals and techniques with an emphasis on skill development and ocean safety. Experienced staff will work with campers individually and in small groups to create a fun and productive environment. Surfboards are provided.

Golden and Toned

Golden and toned is tailored for active older adults, who want to focus on muscle conditioning with light weight activity and some dancing. This class blends the sounds of a Latin music party while doing a total body workout. Low to moderate intensity strength training with 1-pound weights or no weights at all. On occasion, resistance bands may be used but not necessary. Be ready to have fun and tone up in this 30-minute class.

Health Barre

In this effective total-body conditioning program you will improve your posture, muscle-tone, and strength with basic Pilates and ballet movements. Work your entire body using light weights, bands, ballet barre, and your own body weight as well as other methods of resistance to promote lean muscle. Please bring a mat, 1 or 2 lb. hand weights, water, and a towel.

Layered Flow - Progressive Vinyasa for Seniors

This class is built on layers. Starting with a slow-intentional warmup, gradually weaving poses together into seamless, breath led flow. This is an inclusive space designed to challenge your body while calming your mind, exactly as you are. Some yoga experience recommended but not necessary.

Restore and Explore Yoga

This gentle floor-based practice helps you rediscover the joy of movement without the strain of standing. Class includes therapeutic breathing, slow intentional movement, and restorative poses, with time to ease in and out of each posture. We focus on mindful movement and honoring stillness throughout. Windows for Seniors: Introduction to Windows 11

Computers are provided—nothing to bring. Windows 11 looks and feels different from older versions of Windows, and if your computer recently updated, it can feel like starting from scratch. In this friendly, hands-on class, Sergi (Your Tech Tutor) will walk you through the new layout, show you how to find your files, apps, and settings, and help you feel confident and comfortable on your computer again. No prior Windows 11 experience required.

Oakcrest Cafe

The Oakcrest Cafe offers daily nutritious lunches in a welcoming environment. Reservations are required and can be made up until 12pm the business day before you would like a meal by calling (760) 943-2258. The suggested meal contribution is $5 per meal for adults 60+ and a mandatory $8 fee per meal for those under 60. Please make checks payable to the City of Encinitas.

Check-in time for lunch is 11:00-11:30am. Lunch is served at 11:40am. The Oakcrest Cafe is supported by the City of Encinitas and general meal donations. No eligible person shall be denied a meal because of failure or inability to contribute. Please note, a registration form is required for all participants and must be updated annually.

Encinitas Senior Center Lunch Transportation

Transportation is available for eligible senior citizens (60+) to and from the Senior Center for lunches Monday through Friday. If you or someone you know is interested in rides to the lunches, call (760) 943-2258 to request an application. Suggested $4 donation per round-trip van ride.
