Connections Design

Culham Campus - 11 kV Ring Main and Multi-Utility Project

Enable Design provided detailed civil and utilities design for the Culham Campus perimeter route, supporting two 11kV ring mains, six Ring Main Units (RMUs), water mains and data ducting through a constrained operational research environment.

Completed Design - RIBA Stage 4

Client: UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA)

Scope: 2 × 11 kV ring mains, 6 RMUs, HDPE water main and communications ducts

Scale: 1.8 m of trench and roadworks across four route legs

Role: Lead civil designer - route selection, utility coordination, civils design

Design Disciplines: ICP / Multi-Utility Civils

Civil & Site

1.8km open-cut perimeter trench through roads, concrete slabs and soft landscape, including D400 chambers, utility crossings and protection of existing campus infrastructure.

SCADA & Controls

Six integrated T300 smart RMU units provided for the ring-main network, with duct access, enabling future integration with the proposed T3 substation and wider campus network.

Electrical

Two 11kV HV ring mains in ducted trefoil routes, with six RN2d/T300 RMUs distributed around the campus, incorporating jointing pits, cable routes and utility separation throughout the network design.

Multi-Utility

Coordinated HV, water and data distribution corridor, tying the perimeter network back to the T3 interface while protecting existing live services across a secure campus.

Reading Independent Feeder -

33kV HV Feeder Cable & ATFS Substation

Enable provided civil and HV engineering design for a new independent 25 kV feeder to Reading –a new Holly Cross Auto Transformer Feeder Station (ATFS) and a 17 km lineside HV cable route fed from the Bramley National Grid 400 kV site.

Design Disciplines: ICP / Multi-Utility Civils

Client: Network Rail

Scope: New Holly Cross ATFS, 25-0-25 kV HV cable route, National Grid 400 kV interface and lineside fibre telecoms

Scale: ≈ 17 km lineside HV cable route through bridges, embankments and culverts

Role: Principal Designer & Principal Contractor - design and installation

Civil & Site

Full enabling and civils to form the ATFS platform on a greenfield site – site clearance, bulk earthworks, haul roads and access, drainage, culverts and retaining structures, Under Track Crossing (UTX).

Electrical

New Holly Cross Auto Transformer Feeder Station and 25 kV HV cable route, delivering an independent supply route to Reading ATFS within the 25 kV RATS network.

Integration into the existing SCADA master station at Didcot Electrical Control Room (ECR), with IPC scheme, device settings and IP network design, plus factory and site acceptance testing.

Grid & Telecoms

National Grid 400 kV interface at Bramley and a new lineside fibre / FTN telecoms route linking Holly Cross and Reading ATFS to the Basingstoke and Reading core nodes.

Maritime Transport John Gilbert Way Depot11kV grid connection Case Study

Enable Design provided multidisciplinary civil and electrical design for a new eHGV charging hub at John Gilbert Way providing a new substation, LV distribution network, EV charging infrastructure, cable routes and utility coordination to support DNO/IDNO approvals within a live operational logistics depot.

Completed Design - Concept → DNO Approval → Detailed Design → Construction Support

Client: Gridserve

Scope: Civil, electrical and utility design for a 5-bay eHGV charging hub - HV connection, substation and LV distribution infrastructure

Scale: 5x360kW eHGV chargers, new 2 MVA substation, 3000A LV pillar + ~250m 11kV cable route

Role: Lead designer multidisciplinary coordination, DNO/IDNO interfaces, statutory approvals

Design Disciplines: ICP / Multi-Utility Civils

Civil & Site

Site layout, HGV bay coordination, trenching, duct bank details, resurfacing requirements and as-laid record updates within an operational depot environment.

Electrical

HV and LV design coordination including substation interfaces, RMU/LV pillar requirements, feeder pillar design, cable schedules, earthing and SLD package development.

Design of a 5-bay eHGV charging hub, including charger locations, cable routing, HGV swept-path coordination and depot integration.

Coordination with ENWL and Last Mile for design approval, adoption requirements, metering updates, legal plan interfaces, MPAN/EVCP paperwork and energisation submissions.
