_DAPHNE EMPEDOCLE _ARCHITECT & URBAN DESIGNER

From a very young age I had a keen interest in art. I joined a community Art Workshop in my area, acquiring a very solid foundation in different types of art, such as painting, sculpture, collage and more. I also had one of my paintings chosen for an exhibition at the Hellenic Children's Museum (https://www.hcm.gr/). Later I began to engage in other types of art such as theater and dancing, from which I learned how to move within a certain space, but also

how space can be shown from a different perspective. Joining the Scouts, helped me discover nature first hand and I developed a strong interest in the coexistence of urban and natural environments and therefore in landscape architecture. Growing up I become a Scout Troop Leader, a very demanding position that requires a lot of organizing, decision making but also team work. Throughout my college years I was working at an Event Planning office where I helped setting up large events and by creating the graphic designs. I also worked as a children’s entertainer,

which requires thinking out of the box. Studying for my Bachelor’s degree gave me the opportunity to explore areas around Attica and see them in a more detailed perspective than I used to, by proposing new uses and changes at the existing urban environment.

For my Masters in Architecture and Urbanism I handled projects of much larger scale, proposing a master plan and analyzing it all the way to the technical details of the construction. My studies have provided me with skills in problem solving and staying positive and productive under pressure, along with making me detail orientated and passionate about my work.

_Healing Wounded Land The Role of Environmental Education in Sustainable Rehabilitation of Quarries

The Environmental Education Center I am proposing, is emerging as a way to engage building users in environmental themes through the proposed uses and architectural design of building s in order to raise awareness, promote research and inspire visitors such as families, schools, university students, of around Attica region. The location of an illegal small scape quarry on the foot of mountain Hymettus in Attica was the main reason for the site’s proposed location. Combined with the fact that the site is neighboring with the National Kapodistrian University of Athens and also the grove of Eridanus river which create a link between education and the natural environment.

_Waterfront Urban Regeneration Introducing nature as a way of living by living, working and including it to everyday life.

The location of the site is by the sea at Falliro, Attiki Greece. It is an area with historical interest as it has been habitated for a very long period of time. That is due to the fact that it is a port to the Meditetanian and also that there are two great rivers of Attiki end up at this specific site. Nowdays there are two main axes that lead to the site. One is the national road and the other is Sygrou Avenue, which start’s from the center of Athens. The main road of the area is Posidonos Avenue, which passes on the top throughout the width of the site. It is a high speed avenue and that is the reason why it exists as a barrier to the connection of the city and the site. The only way to get to it is by two small scale passages under the avenue. Something else that passes on the top throughout the width of the site is a dry canal. This is used in case of a flood to control the water

The suggested uses of the site as they were stated by the masterplan, have an environmental aspect. They combine uses in each block and emphasize on the ratio of the build and natural environment. There are two large scale parks, the canal park which regenerates the dry canal between the avenue and the site and the wetland park which is focused to an environmental aspect. The amount of green space in the urban environment of the city is very low comparing with the proportion of the build area. This amount is extended and amplified towards the site gradually leading the visitors to the absolute natural environment of the wetland park. Based on the golden ratio spiral there has been approximately formed the ratio of different elements on the site. The largest amount will be taken by green spaces because of the environmental aspect of the proposal, followed by the built environment and the circulation. The smallest amount is the element of water, not as the sea that surrounds the site but as the artificial canals that on the nature corridors that separate the peninsulas. The goal of this proposal is not only to create a green park for people to visit, but to create opportunity to introduce nature as a way of living by living, working and basically include it to everyday life. The proposal strongly supports the opposite way of including nature into urban environment as it suggests three different ratios of natural and built environment. 1. Nature into urban 2. Nature and urban and 3. Urban into nature. These situations have different outcome and are ideal in specific situations.
