AlmaFondaFina’snewflagshipin ElPaso,Texas,reimaginesan existingtwo-storybuilding intoarefined diningdestinationthat blendscontemporary designwiththewarmthofa traditionalMexicanfonda.The spaceunitesallrestaurantoperations,includingdual-leveldining,abarandlounge,privateeventareas, andoutdoorterraces,withinone cohesiveenvironment.Thoughtfullyplannedcirculation,coresystems, andspatiallayoutsensureefficiency,comfort,andanelevatedguestexperience rootedincultural authenticity andmoderncraftsmanship.

ConceptStatement

RootedintheessenceofAlmaFondaFinaa “finesoulkitchen” thedesigndrawsinspirationfromthe marigold,asacredsymbolinMexicancultureandtheDayoftheDead.Knownasthe “flowerofthesoul,” themarigold’sgoldenglowisbelievedto guidespiritshome,connectingthelivingandthedeparted throughlight,scent,andmemory.Warmambertones,naturalmaterials,andgentleilluminationechothis guidingradiance,whilearchesandhandcrafteddetailsreflectMexicanarchitecturalandartisanal traditions.Theresultisa spacethatcelebratesthesoul invitingguestsintoanexperienceofwarmth, reflection,andsharedconnection.Eachelementfromtheglowofbrassaccentstothefragranceoffresh floralsworkstogethertoevokeasenseofreverence,continuity,andlife’senduringbeauty.

Thisspace blendsdiningandliveperformances,witharaisedstagethatkeepsentertainersvisible withoutoverwhelmingdiners.Theopenlayoutencouragesaclose, livelyatmosphere.Thestage shiftsthediningareaintoaloungeforperformances,orservesasaplatformforeventsormore seating.Thiskeepsthespace active and adaptable.Wallnichesshowcaseceramicsandartifacts, addingwarmthandreinforcingthespace’sculturalfeel.Warmwood,softlights,andcomfortable seatingbalancedining,performance,anddisplay,makingthisa trueculturalhub.

My initialinspiration forthesinkwastobe reminiscentoftheshapeandfeelofa flower blossom,particularlyamarigold.Asthedesign progressed,Irecognizedtheimportanceofnot relyingexclusivelyonthemarigoldmotif,givenits presenceinthewallpaper.Instead,Iwasdrawnto theconceptofthesinkemittingasoft,glowing light, symbolizingasoul or spirit.Torealizethis vision,Iselectedyellowcalciteforitsluminous properties.Thestone'stranslucencyeffectively capturesanddiffuseslight,enrichingthe atmosphereofthespace.Thissubtleglow establishesafocalpoint,encouragingpatronsto pauseandappreciatethesink'sartistry.

Theheadquartersfor HabitatforHumanity,aglobalChristiannonprofitcommittedto affordablehousing, wasrecently redesigned tobettersupportitsmissionandoperations.Foundedin1976inAmericus, Georgia,withitsadministrativecenterinAtlanta,theorganization buildssafe,stablehomesworldwide through collaboration andfaith-drivenservice.Thenewheadquartersin Geneva,Switzerland,expands Habitat’sglobalreach and strengthensconnections withinternationalpartners.Theredesignsupported teamwork,volunteercoordination,andadministrativefunctionswhilereflectingHabitat’svaluesof inclusivity,sustainability,andcommunity,creatingaworkspacethatenhancestheorganization’smission andglobalimpact.

ConceptStatement

Forthisproject,Idrewinspirationfromtheconceptofa framework muchlikethatofa house.Justasa home’sframeworkformstheskeletonthatsupportsandshapestheentirestructure,Isawthisconceptas ametaphorforbuildingastrong, supportiveenvironment fortheorganizationanditspeople.This approach reflectedHabitatforHumanity’smission to buildstrongfoundationsforfamilies and communities.Likeeveryhomethatbeganwithasolidstructure,theredesignedheadquartersprovideda balancedandcollaborativeenvironmentthatfosteredinnovation.Thedesignemphasizedfunctionality, warmth,andadaptabilitythroughtheuseofsustainablematerials,modularlayouts,andnaturallight. Openareasencouragedteamwork,whilequietzonessupportedreflection.Brandedstorytelling throughoutthespacehighlightedHabitat’sglobalimpact,creatingapurposefulenvironmentthat embodiedhome,hope,andcommunity.

SITE ANALYSIS

HabitatforHumanity’snewheadquartersis locatedalongthe RhôneRiver in Genève, Switzerland.Thisareaishometooneofthe world’sstrongestinternationalhubs.The UnitedNationsoffice,theWorldHealth Organization,andtheInternationalRed CrossandRedCrescentareallseatedin Geneva.Habitat'sproximitytomajor humanitarian,policy,anddevelopment organizations strengthens its abilityto collaborate and expandglobal partnerships.Thisstrategicproximity supportstheorganization’smissionto addresshousinginsecurityworldwide.

Additionally,thesiteislocatednear Geneva’scentraltrainstationandmajor tram/busroutes.ThecityofGenevaisalso walkable,makingiteasytoaccess.

Switzerland’s neutrality,safety, and political stability makeGenevaan idealbase for humanitarianorganizations.Thecity’s values and internationalcommunity closelyalignwith HabitatforHumanity’smission,strengthening its globalpresence.Geneva’sleadershipin environmentalpolicyandsustainabledesign createsstrongopportunitiesforahighperformance,responsibleheadquarters. Together,thesequalitiesallowthenew headquartersto embody transparency, sustainability,andHabitat’scommitmentto environmentalstewardship.

Theboothseatingdesigndraws inspirationfrom HabitatforHumanity’smission toprovideeveryone withasafeanddecentplacetolive.Eachbooth incorporatesastylizedhouseform,usingwood slatstoframetheseatingandevokethe feelingof shelterandstructure. Thevibrantblueupholstery introducesasenseofoptimismandreflectsthe organization’supliftingspirit.Positionedalongthe windows,thebooths createsemi-privatespaces for collaboration, conversation,and reflection. Beyondfunctionality,thisdesignelement symbolizesthecomfortandsecurityofhome, servingasavisualreminderofHabitatfor Humanity’spurposeandtheimpactofitswork.

The Museum wasselectedto educate visitors and volunteers onHabitatfor Humanity’smission,history,andglobal impact.The interactiveinformation panels allowgueststoexplorethe organization’svalues,projects,and community-buildingpracticesthrough engagingvisualsandmultimedia content.Thespaceaimstoinspire learning,sparkempathy,andhighlight theimportanceofsafe,affordable housing.

Acrossthevast,flatplainsofLubbock,Texas,abeautifulsceneappearseachspring.Thedrylandcomes tolifeas dogwoodtrees bloom,coveringtheareain softwhiteflowers andbrightgreenleaves.Their beautytransformstheordinarylandscapeintosomething serene andvibrant.Thehomewillreflectthis naturalcharmbysurroundingthespacewithgentlewhitetones,inspiredbythedogwood’sblossoms.The designdrawsinspirationfromthetree’ssimpleyetelegantform, blendingnaturalelements withamodern styletocreatea peaceful and balanced livingenvironment.Inside,anopenandorganiclayoutwill guidetheeyethroughtherooms,creatingasenseofflow,connection,andlightnessthroughoutthe home.

ConceptStatement

TheclientsareAvaandMarkHutchinson.Markisanaccountant,andAvaisaprofessorexpectingtheir firstchild.Theyareseekingtoconstructa modern-style,4-bedroom,3-bathroomhome in Lubbock,Texas, withabout 3,000squarefeetoflivingspace.Thiswillnotbetheirforeverhome,astheyplantosellin roughly10years.Theywanttheprimarybedroomseparatedfromtheotherthreebedroomsforprivacy. Onebedroomwillserveasanursery,oneasahomeoffice,andoneasan ADA-compliant mother-in-law suite.Eachbedroomshouldincludeaclosetwithabuilt-indresser.Theclientsenvisionan open-concept floorplanwitha400-square-footbasementandalivingroomcenteredaroundafireplace.Theywant largewindowstoemphasizenaturallightandaconnectiontotheoutdoors.Thedesignshouldalso includeanoutdoorkitchenanda2-carrear-entrygarage.Overall,thehomeshouldbalancecomfort, function,andflexibilityfortheirgrowingfamily.

DesignIntent

ThedesignforAvaandMarkHutchinson’s Lubbockhomeembracesamodern aestheticrootedinnature.This3,000square-foot,four-bedroom,threebathroomresidencebalances functionality,comfort,andastrong indoor-outdoorconnection.Large windowsfilltheopen-conceptlayoutwith naturallight,whiletheprimarysuiteisset apartforprivacy.Thenursery,homeoffice, andADA-compliantmother-in-lawsuite shareonesideofthehouse,andeach bedroomincludesbuilt-instoragefor efficiency.Amodernfireplaceanchorsthe livingarea,creatingawarm,balanced focalpoint.Altogether,thedesignreflects modernliving,familygrowth,andthe quietbeautyofWestTexas.
