EL MILAGRO DE LA PIEDRA THE MIRACLE OF THE STONE

¡Attention, time travelers! We embark on an exciting journey into the history of Barichara, where every cobbled street and colonial building has a story to tell. According to the oldest inhabitants, a humble farmer had a celestial encounter with the Virgin Mary on a carved stone. 1702

¡Atención, viajeros del tiempo! Nos embarcamos en un emocionante viaje hacia la historia de Barichara, donde cada calle empedrada y cada edificio colonial tienen una historia que contar. Cuentan los habitantes más antiguos, que un humilde campesino tuvo un encuentro celestial con la Virgen sobre una piedra tallada.

Esta roca milagrosa despertó la fe de los lugareños, quienes decidieron construir una iglesia en su honor en 1751, dando así vida al encantador pueblo de Barichara. Que por si no lo sabían, este nombre, en el antiguo dialecto Guane, significa “Lugar para el Descanso”.

Aunque la Iglesia Católica nunca oficializó el milagro, su influencia es innegable en cada rincón de Barichara.

This miraculous rock awakened the faith of the locals, who decided to build a church in its honor in 1751, thus giving life to the charming town of Barichara. In case you didn’t know, this name, in the ancient Guane dialect, means “Place for Rest.”Although the Catholic Church never officially recognized the miracle, its influence is undeniable in every corner of Barichara.

Durante la lucha por la independencia de España, Barichara fue un punto crucial en la ruta histórica de los comuneros, que conectaba sitios emblemáticos de la gesta independentista. Este período trajo desafíos para los indígenas Guane, quienes vivieron una reducción significativa en su población. Lo anterior facilitó a los españoles la toma de posesión de la tierra y la fundación de una comunidad con una arquitectura colonial que perdura hasta nuestros días y que podrás observar cuando recorras las calles del pueblo.

During the struggle for independence from Spain, Barichara was a crucial point on the historical route of the “comuneros,” connecting emblematic sites of the independence movement. This period brought challenges for the Guane indigenous people, who experienced a significant reduction in their population. This facilitated the Spanish takeover of the land and the founding of a community with colonial architecture that persists to this day, which you can observe as you walk through the streets of the town.

En Barichara, la población actual es de 11,092 personas, lo que representa el 0.47% de la población total del departamento según datos del DANE. Las mujeres son ligeramente más numerosas, representando el 51.1%, mientras que los hombres constituyen el 48.9%. Hay 1,793 niños menores de 12 años (16.2%) y 899 adolescentes (8.1%).

La mayoría de la población son adultos, con 8,400 personas mayores de 18 años, que constituyen el 75.7%.

In Barichara, the current population is 11,092 people, representing 0.47% of the total population of the department according to DANE data. The ‘patiamarillos,’ a name referring to the habitants of Barichara, are a vivid reflection of the rich history that permeates the streets of this charming town. This appellation arises from a peculiar historical detail: the cobblestone streets of Barichara used to be built with yellow stone. Because of this, the soles of the shoes worn by the inhabitants acquired this characteristic yellow hue.

CAMINO REAL ROYAL ROAD

El camino se hizo con losas de piedra plana muy abundante en la región, y comienza en la zona alta de Barichara al lado del monumento a Bolivar.

The path was made with flat stone slabs abundant in the region, and it starts in the upper area of Barichara next to the Bolivar monument.

Comienza nuestra increíble aventura en la entrada del camino real de la mano de nuestro fiel guía; allí conmemoramos las huellas que dejaron los Guanes en la región.

¿Sabías que se dice que existen más de 1300 kilómetros de los llamados caminos de Lengerke? Estos fueron inicialmente usados por el pueblo Guane.

Our adventure begins at the entrance of the Royal Road, guided by our faithful guide; there we commemorate the traces left by the Guanes in the region.

Did you know that it is said that there are more than 1300 kilometers of the so-called caminos de Lengerke? These were initially used by the Guanes.

En este punto escucharemos la historia que hay por contar de nuestros antepasados y observaremos los vestigios que guarda la entrada del camino real.

Además, para emprender correctamente nuestro recorrido, recibirás un amuleto del Cacique Guanentá: quien es un protector al que tendrás que pedirle su compañía para recorrer las calles de Barichara.

La aparición se hizo sobre una piedra donde la imagen apareció tallada claramente. El milagro se divulgó y los campesinos convirtieron la roca en motivo de adoración. La catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción fue construida en recuerdo a la Virgen de la roca, por lo que debemos caminar por las pisadas de aquellos que alguna vez construyeron esta Catedral.

En De la Tierra Casa Taller, puedes sumergirte en experiencias que conectan con la naturaleza y la cultura local. Aprende la técnica de pintura con tierra, explora la diversidad de Santander en una botella o descubre la arquitectura campesina del bahareque.

Esta última, es una técnica heredada de los indígenas; se puede aprender en miniatura y llevar como un recuerdo de la hermosa Barichara.

Cada una de estas experiencias incluye una duración de 1 hora y 30 minutos con café, té o vino, y una galleta artesanal para los más pequeños. ¡Ideal para todas las edades a partir de 4 años!

Es hora de que experimentes con este tipo de materiales locales y ¡no olvides la autenticidad de las raíces artísticas!.

Te enseñaremos de la mano de las talleristas, la técnica de la tapia pisada,esta se elabora con tierra arcillosa húmeda, que se va depositando en un encofrado de madera a medida que se compacta a golpes mediante un pisón.

Al realizar esta ruta como Agencia, hemos explorado ámbitos del diseño completamente nuevos y enriquecedores. El hecho de realizar un amplio trabajo de campo, viajar hasta Barichara y sumergirnos en su cultura ha sido una experiencia inolvidable.

El proceso nos permitió interactuar con la gente local y conocer sus historias, lo que añadió una capa más de autenticidad a nuestra experiencia. La reacción positiva de la comunidad patiamarilla hacia nuestro trabajo e interés genuino en su cultura fue muy gratificante y nos impulsó a seguir explorando y promoviendo la riqueza de destinos como Barichara.

By conducting this route as an agency, we have explored completely new and enriching realms of design. The act of conducting extensive fieldwork, traveling to Barichara, and immersing ourselves in its culture has been an unforgettable experience. The process allowed us to interact with the local people and learn their stories, adding another layer of authenticity to our incredible experience.

The positive reaction from the Patiamarilla community towards our work and genuine interest in their culture was very rewarding and motivated us to continue exploring and promoting the richness of destinations like Barichara.
