The colour palette was inspired by all the bright colours my client wears - specifically her bright yellow coat - her love for sunny warm days at the beach and warm sunsets. Choosing white furniture will help to enhance the natural light that enters the room from the garden and to optically widen it while keeping the whole feeling of it very minimal, yet cozy.

DESCRIPTION

LOCATION

The space that is going to be designed is located in a small town in Switzerland in a family house with a garden. The space is at the ground floor and it has a direct access to the inner garden that leads to the actual garden. The room has lots of light.

CURRENT SITUATION

The client’s family moved to the new house quite recently so currently the room is being used as a storage. The main challenge of this room is to create two separate spaces and not to overlap with the corridor from the entrance door to the inner garden door.

USE OF NEW SPACE

My client would like to use this space as a home office and a reading corner. From time to time it could also be used by her kids (5 & 11) to read & craft. They also have two cats, that will also have access to the room.

CLIENTS PREFERENCES

She likes bright colours and minimalist style.

VISUALISATION

The shelving unit does double duty as a subtle room divider, defining a clear corridor between the entrance and the garden door — ensuring that anyone working or reading in this space remains undisturbed by through- traffic, and also offers flexibility for books, magazines, important documents, or even a cozy retreat for a feline companion.

Soft curtains were introduced to manage natural light during reading hours, while also lending the space a warm, intimate atmosphere as the room transitions from work mode to leisure.

The desk is intentionally placed at the far corner of the room, adjacent to the garden-facing window — a positioning rooted in the Feng Shui principle of the Command Position, which fosters focus, a sense of control, and a naturally productive energy in any workspace.

Entering from the garden, the distinction between the two zones becomes immediately clear. The reading corner invites a sense of warmth and retreat — a dedicated reading lamp with soft, ambient light would be a natural addition to enhance that cosy atmosphere further.

The desk anchors its own defined work zone, offering generous surface area for a printer or other office essentials. It also doubles as a welcoming spot for children to join in — whether for creative projects or homework — making the space as adaptable for family life as it is for focused work.

VISUALISATION

The wall above the sofa bed presents an ideal opportunity for a statement art piece, adding personality and a finishing touch to the already warm and welcoming space.

ADDITIONAL SAMPLES

Create your own craft corner: Install the RÄCKA, curtain rod system from IKEA to the entrance door wall. You can cut it down to size as you see fit or to use for the 30 m long MÅLA paper roll. For the art supplies I’d recommend getting the RÅSKOG trolley. This way you create a space where new ideas can come alive without unnecessary clutter in the space. Thanks to the wheels, the trolley can be fast stored below the working table.

ADDITIONAL SAMPLES

With these additional items you can personalise and invite some more members of your family to share the space with you: The foldable mattress SLÄKT can be used both by kids and adults and can be easily stored below the sofa bed. For the little hairy family members IKEA offers now UTSAD cubes that perfectly fit into the KALLAX shelves. In case of additional needs for storage or to create a cat path around the room the shelves are an easy choice. And last but not least, with the RÖDALM picture frame you can frame your artworks or special pieces close to your heart.
