TALL PINES MEDICAL CENTER - HUALAPAI NATION There is no deviation of mind and body; if one is afflicted both suffer… True health is found in harmony

Hualapai Nation, which translates to People of the Tall Pines, is a community that constantly grapples with a profound mental health crisis. Acts of physical abuse, drug use, and suicide grip the minds of many within the community. Furthermore, the lack of social support and outreach makes it difficult for locals to get preventative and rehabilitative care. Reconnecting people with social services and reviving the community will be critical to their future. The absence of these services and connections has led to a decline in sociability among residents, further contributing to the isolation and despair that plagues the community. Tall Pines Medical Center provides a variety of spaces for mind and body care of varying acuity, ensuring all behavioral health situations can be properly treated and prevented.

The demographic makeup of the local community is predominantly indigenous people, accounting for 90% of the population. This demographic composition contributes a unique layer of cultural concerns and sensitivities that must be accounted for when designing and implementing mental health initiatives. Providing spaces for flexible mental health care treatments will best suit the needs of the indigenous people, while providing proper services for rehabilitation and education. The goal is to empower individuals through education and provide them the services and tools they need to combat mental illness in their lives and in the lives of their neighbors. Unifying and educating the community will bring about a holistic change in wellness.
