I’ve been tattooing for almost 4 years now. I work in Columbus Oh, at 22 Caliber Tattoo's, located at 2594 Hilliard Rome Rd. I specialize in new school and floral work but I always love a good challenge. I grew up moving around a lot and as a result I was never able to make a sold friend group so at a young age I made art my life. I’ve known ever since I was about 14years old that I wanted to be a tattoo artist. I remember how mysterious the whole concept of tattooing was to me but I knew I had to be a part of its culture. In the following years I did everything I could to prepare myself to follow this career and as a result I've committed my
entire life to it. There’s just something about how happy a new piece of art can make a person that fuels my passion. I’ve always worked for my clients, never myself; and I believe that it separates me from a lot of artists in the sense that it consistently keeps me learning and growing. To rest is to rust and I’ve put myself and my life in a position where I must create, or die, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Looking back at your past, do you regret those moments of self-hatred, or do you see them as an asset to your current platform? If so, how so? I don’t regret anything per say. I am at a place in my life now where I am surrounded by people who love me and am making a way to help people, so they don’t go through what I did. I know if I didn’t go through all of it I wouldn’t be at this place today. So, no, I don’t regret it. I just hope to be able use my story as an inspiration for other people. Where do you like to shop? Rue 21 is, has been, and will always be my #1 store. A lot of people will tell you I have a problem, but I just love it so much. Over half of my closet is rue 21, and I hope to model for them one day. I also love Torrid for my intimates. What are some of your must haves for clothes, accessories, and make up? My must have for clothes would be crop tops. You’ll see me in crop tops all year long. I don’t really wear a lot of accessories, but I never take off my sparkly Michael Kors necklace my sweet boyfriend got me. It goes with everything and just adds a little touch of sparkle. Makeup must have is a tough one since I love all things makeup, but I would say eyeliner and lipstick. Those two things can change any look from princess to queen in a minute. INKED: Why I Did DO It By Shannon Harris
In March 2017, I made the decision to get my first tattoo. This was not an easy decision. I had been intrigued by tattoos as a teen, but something always stopped me from getting at tattoo. One reason was the pain of it. Another was how friends and family would show concern about how it would look as I aged. The last reason was because whenever I donated blood, I was always asked about tattoos and piercings. I knew if I had gotten one, I would be deferred and unable to donate blood, which being a universal donor made that a huge decision as lives depended on my blood type. I didn’t know it was only for a set time after getting a tattoo, not indefinitely, so I just didn’t do it. My life and worries changed in November 2016 when I was severely injured in a car accident. I experienced the worst pain in my life. By February, I had been through what I believed to be the worst of it, so I figured if I can take having my foot turned inside out, I could handle the pain of a little tattoo. I knew I would be deferred from donating blood because of my trauma and surgery, but I wasn’t sure how long. I researched the deferment length from surgery and discovered my tattoo would only cause a six month or so deferment. Well, I was already deferred so now was as good a time as any. I reached out to friends for recommendations for an artist. I was directed to Barry Craig who was in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This would be a long drive for me, so I had to be dedicated to it. Now it was time to decide on the design. This part was the hardest because I wanted to only get one tattoo, so it had to be a good and something I was happy with forever. The main design would include a butterfly. I have always loved the symbolism of how something that appeared to be ugly would become something so beautiful. I wanted some beauty out of this accident. Next, I wanted to somehow incorporate my writing into it. Writing had become my go to when challenges and painful situations occurred. It was also where I felt the strongest. I got the idea to make the butterfly’s body into a fountain pen, like it was writing something. What it was writing was a whole other issue. The last part of the butterfly was the inclusion of a semicolon; the semicolon represents mental health awareness for those who find themselves at and end but who choose to continue living life. I certainly thought my story was

over the day of the accident, but I survived. I was left with what the pen would be writing. Truth be told, I was working on this part even up to minutes before Barry would start my tattoo. I even made last minute changes, and he was gracious about it. I knew I wanted “hope” included so I looked for quotes with hope in them. Most were too long, but one that started with “faith” then “hope” stood out. My faith had been there with me through several difficult decisions and even found a way to prepare me for what was about to happen. Several of the “Faith” and “Hope” tattoos had “Love,” but I didn’t feel that “Love” was necessary because I had lots of love in my life. I wanted something that would be a reminder to stand strong and boldly go where others may not. As I waited for Barry to print a template of the butterfly, I searched for the final piece. That’s when I came across “Faith,” “Hope,” and “Courage.” Courage. Yeah, that would work. I would need courage to brave into the unknown of this new life after the accident as the doctors all told me the life I had prior would never be the same. This made me think of how courage is a key support for cancer patients. When my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer, she had the courage to continue teaching through the school year then seek treatment because her students were so important to her. She ultimately lost that battle, but I had another dear friend who just started her own battle with the terrible disease, so I chose courage for her too. I know that seems like a lot for a tattoo, but this was no easy decision for me. I wanted every bit of it to serve as meaning. Again, I only was going to do this once. That’s what they all say, right? I have plans to take a couple of scars from some painful periods of my life to make them beautiful as well. I am still considering the design of at least two more, but I do know that my next one will incorporate something from my biological father who recently passed away. Maybe you’ll see it in future INKED editions. The last thing I have to say about my decision to be inked was that tattoo had so much symbolism that it has served as a reminder for each supportive thing since I was inked. In October 2017, I went through a very, very dark period of my life.

My marriage was falling apart, I had to undergo another surgery on my foot, and finances got super scary. Each time I found I was spiraling down, I turned to my faith for the courage to hold on knowing that there was always hope that something would get better.
